Magnetic North part 2 (SPOILERS)

Summary:

It begins with Ultimate Longshot, who now has a beard, and is hunting a pterodactyl in the Savage Land. Ultimate Wanda appears! Longshot tells W. that he's a big fan of her dad. She's not so impressed. Longshot tries to take her down, but her Elektra-like athletic prowess and woogie-craft exceed his and she turns him into a kitty cat and takes him back to the Triskelion.

Meanwhile, Ultimate Havok (yay!) is not so happy that Ultimate Emma let Ultimate SHIELD take Ultimate Lorna (yay!) into custody.

Lorna awakens in the cell of Ultimate Magneto. He tells her that Emma used to go out with Ultimate Professor X. Ultimate Pietro is monitoring the whole conversation.

Emma contacts Professor X, who tells her that Lorna is imprisoned with Magneto in the special cell he designed. He warns her not to tell anyone - but Ultimate Doug Ramsey (yay!) and the other Ultimate New Mutants bugged the conversation. Havok demands they go to rescue her. Ultimate Northstar is down with that, but Ultimate Cannonball not so much. New kid, Ultimate Sunspot, is quickly convinced.

Professor X briefs the X-Men on the situation. Ultimate Marvel Girl is shocked (oddly) that Ultimate Cyclops used to date Lorna. Xavier sends the senior team to stop Alex and the new mutants, and the junior members.

At the scene of Lorna's wig-out, Ultimate Forge and some other guy are plotting Magneto's escape. A police-woman spots them and is quickly killed by the other guy, who is revealed to be..................Ultimate Mystique!

Then it ends.

Commentary:

One of the best Ultimate X-Men issues ever! Ultimate Wanda gets to show more personality in 3 pages than she's shown in, what, 5 years of Ultimate books? Vaughan's Magneto is excellent, both charismatic and sleazy. The great cast of New Mutants deserve their own title.

Is this the first time we have seen the McCoy Memorial Hall? If it has then its the first time I noticed it. I'm still not sure if I like Ultimate Mystique being revealed this way sort of kills the running joke. Besides that all in all a good issue.

Bah! Longshot turned into a black cat? That's ignominious, even if it is pretty funny. Okay, okay, it was cute (and great to see him again), but man, hope he appears again in this arc, maybe being freed in the chaos and joining up with Magneto.

Besides, you know he was taking it easy on Wanda 'cause she's Maggie's kid. If Ultimate Longshot ever goes up against Gambit, well, now THAT will be a bloodbath.

Nice recap Cay and I agree it was a great issue.

Isn't Jean shocked because the issue before Cyclops told her she was his only Girlfriend in the danger room sequence?

Why exactly do you think Magneto came across as sleazy? I thought Xaviar came across more "sleazy" with the revelation reagrding him boinking Ema when she was a student all be it a "special one" or some gibberish.

I just thought being all psychic Jean might've known a thing or two about Scott's old lovelife. Maybe I have telepathic trust issues though. :D

This issue of Ultimate X-Men was awesome. This is how the Ultimate New Mutants arc should've been. Remember Bendis' stab at the Ultimate New Mutants? That arc was not my favorite. If Bendis wanted the Ultimate New Mutants to be a team of Ultimate diplomats, then why the battle suits? If they are to be speakers and leaders, and are to be taken seriously, why was Ultimate Emma Frost dressed up like a scantily-clad superhero? How is that sending an intelligent message?

This was great, though. The chemistry between Ultimate Emma and her Ultimate New Mutants were great. I'm glad Ultimate Sunspot is being featured. I like his little appearance in the Ultimate Sinister arc of Ultimate X-Men. And the rest of the Ultimate New Mutants were written perfectly. I love how Ultimate Alex is still in his brother's shadow, and trying to be a leader in his own right. But you can tell he's more of a hothead, and is struggling with his outbursts.

So, we find out that Ultimate Lorna was set up by Ultimate Magneto. That's a great plot twist. I can't wait to see how this pans out.

I mean, the setup is great. I kinda hope the Ultimates guest star, because after the Ultimate X-Men learn the truth, you know they're gonna try to bust Ultimate Polaris out. And then, it'll be the Ultimate X-Men and the Ultimate New Mutants against the Ultimates. This is gonna be good.

I'm excited.

i was quite surprised- and pleased- with the last page.

BKV has turned Ult. X-men from a book that i was thinking about dropping into a book that gets moved to the top of the stack every time. And Mr. Immonen's art helps quite a bit, too. I'm really becoming a fan of his.

I'm just happy they seem to be willing to do more with Longshot. He was one of my favorites from the early days but they never went anywhere with him outside of Mojo. I love this new version. And Ultimate Wanda is awesome.

Anyone know if Flight has recovered from seeing so much Havok in this book? I'm sure he some kinda attack.

I liked that Mysique might be Prof X's personal secret Bodyguard in cat form.

But instead it would seem that's she's not.

Instead she's an "evil mutant" out to free Magneto. So her and the cat aren't the same thing.

That or she IS his cat/bodyguard and Xavier is okay with her killing people in order to free Magneto... whom he placed in jail anyways...

Flight flew right into the book itself to help Alex bust out Polaris. We won't see him again until the third issue.

God, such a little drama queen. And right he's gonna help Havok save the gf and then just walk away. I think Lorna would have a fight on her hands that would make magneto look like a 1st grader.

Probably MU Lorna, Ultimate Lorna just seems to be getting framed by Magneto. She's a blank sheet just crying out to be possessed and stuff.

Finally got my comics just an hour ago. Great issue, nice to see BKV bringing up some old stuff from the past 61 issues. Loved seeing 'The McCoy Memorial Hall' again, even though the design for it has changed since the last time it appeared. Can't wait to find out about the Mystique/Mystique connection. Viva la Ultimate X-Men. :)

So it seems more than a few characters are popping up in this arc. Anybody think Beast might show up working for Fury. Ya know...Prof X faked Magneto's death...Fury could just as easily fake Hank's.

I still hope they take the 'Apocalypse's Horseman' angle with Beast, if they do bring him back. That would explain why Pocy was having Sinister kill mutants for him. Plus would allow them to do a quasi 'Dark Beast' story, without doing the whole AOA mess.

I'm sure Beast isn't dead. I mean if they can cremate Peter and still bring him back then why the hell not bring back Beast in Ultimate. Just so long as Wanda doesn't go crazy and kill the Ultimates.

I hope they bring back Sinister. Loved that look he had. He just shouldn't be A's little hooker.

I thought that it was a well-paced issue that seemed to reference a lot of the pre-BKV stuff (which I'm much less familiar with), and as such, it didn't feel too much like a Vaughan style issue to me. It was still good, but it almost seemed like someone else wrote it.

That's why BKV is such a good writer....his transitionary skills make it seem like he's been writing the series since day 1...he knows what he's talking about....

Loved Jean's reaction to Soctt/Lorna....wondering how that will play out later....

And doesn't it seem like Nightcrwler has a passion for make-believe fanatsy worlds in the Danger Room? First he's playing piarates of the carribean with Angel in one arc and now he's in the LOTR world....I guess he's just trying to have fun.....

No one seemed to mention the first appearances of Doug Ramsey and Cannonball....kinda bummed that Sam didnt want to help out Alex.....Cannonball is usually up for some fun.....I'm glad we're seeing new characters pop out here with some significance....

I was also hoping that Mystique was going to be Prof. X's girlfriend or something in which she was a spy for him on the outside while also being his cat...that woulda been sweet but her killing that cop pretty much goes against what Prof. X preaches ya know?....

Cool to see them both, though I'm disappointed they're still sticking with the "Doug stays behind and doesn't fight" angle, rather than using his language powers to give him Taskmaster-style fighting skills. Bah.

Well. The Ultimateverse is supposed to be more realistic. And I never liked the idea of 'Body Language Reading/Ninja' Doug Ramsey. So him staying behind makes a bit more sense to me. Oh well. :)

I agree. I like how he's "human" - like he was thought to be in his early NM appearances because his power was so subtle. Although I hope we do see him face a worthy challenge sometime. Maybe in Ultimate Secret or the next series (Ultimate Invasion?) his communication skills can be put to use by SHIELD talking to aliens- and then he can buddy up with Ultimate Warlock! Did you even read the issue? She supposedly appeared. Whether she's the infamous 'Mystique the Cat' from Xavier's School is the question that remains. :D

Vaugn does tend to provide excellent twists. Perhaps we are being mislead by the closing reveal of what seems to be Ultimate Mystique.. I wouldn't be surprised if the cat was something important, if not Mystique herself... Maybe Mastermind could be involved somehow? The big guns are all obviously being brought out for this story. Can't wait for the next ish!

I love these twists and character connections! I cant wait for the next issue!
I think the annual is going to be a great story(Well gambit is my most fav x-man).
I'm becoming more into this title everytime I read a new one that comes out. Ands that how you know a good comic!

I loved this issue. We even saw Emma has her diamond form here too (though her abrupt breakdown in front of Xavier was a bit much - but this is a small complaint)

This issue also had my number one fanfic moment -- Scarlet Witch up against Longshot! Always wanted to see that :D

Yeah! I'd forgotten about that! Ultimate Warlock exists already! BKV-Bring him on so he can turn into hover-cars and giant electric pants and other wacky stuff!

My only complaint about UXM is that Emma's too much of a softie. Even if she gets snappy at alex. I'm kind of hoping she's helping orchestrate something along with the brotherhood. I'm not too eager for her to be a good guy in the Ultimate Universe yet. Let her be a treacherous villan first!

If I remember correctly Ultimate Emma's only power is her diamond-form, she isn't a telepath.

Great issue! :) Glad to finally see Wanda get a little character development. I love her line: "No love, Wanda works for Wanda." When Longshot asked if it was true that she worked for the flatscans. The Ultimate Scarlet Witch seems a bit witchier than the 616 version. Me likey! I also like the designs for the new mutants' uniforms. very cool and very much in keeping with the more grounded look of the Ultimate Universe. I still think the X-men's uniforms need work though. With the exception of Storm's they come of rather dorky and uninspired.
