Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1 (spoilers)

Damn good annual not as good as the Ultimates annual, but still good. We start with Kitty, Nightcrawler, and Collosus playing Lord of the Rings using the Danger Room. Kitty leaves and then we cut to Spider-Man fighting the Rhino. Spidey defeats the Rhino and leaves the government to play clean up. Kitty and Peter talk to themselves about how they are the losers of their schools and how they don't fit in. Kitty then decides to call Pete to ask him out on a date which she does. Kitty shows up at Peter's school once hes done learnin and they go on a date. They go to the mall, the roof of some building and even beat up The Shocker,Pete sure nows how to show a girl a good time. The X-Jet comes to pick up Kitty and the two exchange e-mail addresses followed by a kiss. So what did everyone else think of the annual?

Well, that was worth the $1.50 more than usual. And I mean no sarcasm by that. Not sure why but it just really struck a chord with me. Beautifully written by Bendis, who must write an issue like this every so often just to remind himself he can. Well, he can. Very touching, kinda sweet, and a definite open door.

I really liked this issue. Here are my fav points of the story...


there was an apperance of Cyclops my all time favorite character
I really like the art. I thought it fit well with the story. I like it more than Immoone's work on Ult.X
The interaction of the characters for the most part seemed pretty natural.
The full page of Spidey and Kitty kissing was sweet.

Seriously, what a great comic. Spider-Man and Shadowcat make the PERFECT little couple. On many levels. Ugh, it's so heart-warmingly adorable. Makes me sick. :D

The whole time through, I was thinking, "Spider-Man/Shadowcat team-up, please...Spider-Man/Shadowcat team-up, please...Spider-Man/Shadowcat team-up, please...Spider-Man/Shadowcat team-up, please..." So when the Shocker showed up, I was wild with amusement.

Do I like the pairing? Yes. Do I hope to see it explored in monthly issues of USM? Yes. Do I regret that ultimately it will not last, and Spidey will eventually revert to MJ? Yes on that, too. But way to go Bendis, for making an original change to the UU and masking it good.

They did click, but I think Kitty will show up in Ultimate Spider-Man more though if BKV likes the idea we might see Spidey in Ult.XM.

However, so far the Annuals fail to dissapoint both have been worth it.

Probably one of the best comics all year. I'm really going on a limb saying that, but this one was really put together really well. Bendis can write some darn good stories, they way he made Peter and Kitty feel the same way before even talking, was good, nice set up. The whole thing was just superb

Great annual! I really liked it! When reading the latest ult spidey comic yesturday I thought it was going to be Black Cat! but man what a twist!

Anyone else realize that the first cover online with the shadow on the mystery girl had legs? and I heard one joke online with someone saying "hey its a shadow girl. Maybe its shadow kitty, or whats her name" Wow a joke becomes reality.

That Robo-Rhino was cool but I dont ever remember one...and was he african-american too there? This is my first time seeing a robot rhino in ult spidey and I gatta say, cool character!

F***ing BENDIS! You know, it's a lot like Godfather III. I try to get out, he keeps pulling me back in!

I really REALLY had a blast with this issue. Honestly, I can't remember the last romantic comedy or TV series where the writer/actors/whatever had me actually so emotionally invested in the characters that the first kiss actually made me grin. Awesome.

And THANK GOD for Ultimate Shocker. I think that guy's my favorite ultimate character. Every single time the guy shows up, fantastic. Made me run out and pre-order the video game.

Anyway, I love that they've finally made a dramatic non-MU departure that WASN'T in direct correlation to a 616 event (as in, doing exactly what 616 did, or EXACTLY what it DIDN'T), but was just an organic thing. Also, have to give major props for the fact that it played off of what was (for me) I thought a spoil in the latest regular issue of USM, i.e. Black Cat showing up and calling Spidey her boyfriend.

I tell ya. It's honestly a pleasure to read this book month after month, and it was great to have a bigger, yet somehow SELF CONTAINED issue. Can't praise it enough! Oh yeah, liked the art, too. To quote Mr. Miyagi (please don't let that be over too many of your heads...), "Different, but same!" Nice to have the ability to change it up without ruining the 103-issue streak.

On the whole, I'm pissed that Bendis is keeping me from saving my paychecks... it's his fault I won't be buying a home any time soon... but dag-nabbit, he makes it fun.

brilliant , the second best comic i have read this year, the first being ultimate spider-man 81 ( i think?) ( the one with mary jane)

but anyway, bendis can do this stuff in his sleep and it would still be ebtter than most of the other stuff that people put out.

kitty was hot as hell in it and , yeah she would like peter, it makes sense! i love mj and was gutted when they split but i would love this to last a while, i know it will not last for too long but at least we can enjoy the ride, i just hope that peter does not cheat on her with mj or vica versa ( well maybe i would not mind that!)



also on a side not i felt that the art was really strong very close to bagley and really strong,

I know this is out of left field...but did you notice that kid getting wedgy outside of Peter's high school, looks alot like that old friend of Pete's that got encased in Vibranium, in Amazing Spider-Man a few months ago.

Really just commenting on it because it struck me so hard...no other real reason.

But in all serious this issue was great.. I like seeingSpidey happy, because most of the time he's either belittling himself, angry, or sad...actually seeing him smile was pretty cool....and kinda made me happy that he's got some lovin in his life......I love the ultimate universe....times like these just confirm that...

Pretty good, though the art is jarring. Scott Hanna's a solid artist, but his Spidey looks awkward. He got Kitty spot on, though.

I liked the story, but where do they go from here? Does Kitty end up dating Peter until the inevitable "I care for you but we live in different worlds", or did this "never happen" for anyone who didn't grab the annual?

I was waiting for someone to notice that. It was a bit of an inside joke between me and the colorist that did the pages for Amazing Spider-man. Great job on the art, Mark. I only bring it up because I normally hate that "psuedo-manga" style that's been so prevalent the past ten years or so, but for some reason, this annual's work didn't turn me off.

I've noticed this issue struck a real chord with people to an extent that I can't recall the last time such a major event in a book of this level was actually this well received. Just goes to show what quality, well-planned writing can do.

I would love it if that's true... what we have to bear in mind is that there's a strong marketing aspect at play too. While we focus on the comics, in the minds of millions of people worldwide who know Spidey mostly through movies and cartoons, MJ is it, period, end of sentence. Yes, in a perfect world the comics would stand on their own and be completely independent of all other Spidey media; but at the same time, when Spider-Man 3 comes out, you know some suit is going to say that for all the movie fans who decide to pick up an issue or two of Ultimate Spidey after loving the film, they want to see MJ, not Kitty Pryde. I love MJ, think she's a great character, but I really wouldn't mind at all seeing Ultimate Peter stay with Kitty... but at the same time, marketing considerations speak against it, sad to say. Not saying it's impossible, stranger things have happened, but it's something to keep in mind.

Man, I'm such a buzzkill... sorry. Hey, I loved the annual, thought it was the cutest story I've read all year!

Anybody catch the awesome shout-out to True Story, Swear to God in the scene where Pete's checking out the message boards? I thought it was really cool. The author of the post Pete's reading is "BelandTSSTG" from Puerto Rico. Tom Beland wrote a Spidey story that will appear in the next issue of Spidey Unlimited, I think, and True Story, Swear to God is a great, honest indie book that'd probably appeal to everyone who found this ish especially cute and heartwarming.

But, so as not to appear the spammer, I should definitely say that I enjoyed the annual a ton. Kitty was adorable and I really want to see this relationship used in the main book for a while.

I mean, especially if we're gonna get cross-promotional here, Kitty is gonna be featured in X3 (next year, right?) so, ya know... not a problem puttin a couple of cash cows together. Then, ya know, you can always reunite MJ & Pete in time for the next flick, mayhaps tentatively, as he tries to determine if, in fact, she CAN handle the danger after all - which will put it right in line where SM2 ended. I really liked the issue, but Kitty and Peter can't go out publicly. If she's out as Kitty Pride/Shadow Cat and dating him and then they have these adventures? She can't date Peter for the same reason Peter can't date MJ, but it's worse. Peter and MJ can work on the veneer as a normal couple, but Peter and Kitty can't do that, if she's out public and they are seen together as Shadow Cat and Spider-Man it won't take much for someone to deduce Peter is Spidey or they hurt Peter to get at the X-Men.

Anyways, though Peter and MJ were met to be together. How can we forget that great issue where MJ tells that one dude that everything is special about Peter Parker.

This is an awesome move (and one I didn't see coming). You guess Bendis finally listened to all the fans complaining about no significant differentiation between the Ultimate and 616 universes?

But really, both characters are great for each other and I hope they stay together for a long time - there's tons of interesting possibilities now.

Actually I'm surprised more people aren't bitching about Peter falling for someone that's not MJ.

Bendis really does a great job nailing that high school vibe and the feelings that go along with being a teen.

What bugged me in the annual is how Kitty's presence totally reveals Spider-man.

As dumb as Peter's classmates may seem, don't they notice that Kitty Pryde usually hangs around A) Peter Parker and B) Spider-Man? That she goes from one to the other within a few seconds? That Spidey hangs around the school an awful lot? :confused:

Well to be fair , its not as if many would even imagine a loser , a geek like Peter could be Spiderman .. hell as said in the annual he hardly get noticed by anyone . I'd even dare say he was more noticable when he was still flash's victim .

The few that would notice he( Peter) hangs around Kitty , will probably instead first assume he is a mutie .

Actually, don't the X-Men have some way of keeping others from noticing who they are? Jean Grey has frequently made other people believe the X-Men were just ordinary everyday people -- which makes sense since the X-Men go on so many covert operations yet never wear masks and occassionally appear on magazine covers. Perhaps Jean or the Professor could do the same for Kitty when she's out with Peter -- remember Jean owes Peter one after she switched his brain with Wolverine's way back when.

At the same time, I'm kinda hoping Peter can introduce his new girlfriend as a mutant -- just to show neither he or Kitty are ashamed of her genetic identity. Liz Allen would freak and all sorts of new drama would break around Peter's home and school life. Would be a nice parallel to the reactions modern teens get from small-minded people when they date people of different ethnicities, religions, sexualities etc.

i would love to see them pursue this relationship (for no other reason than i've always loved these two characters and i'd love to see MJ's reaction to this in a future ish) but i can understand that certain logistics might get in the way. i have a few friends who are irked at the prospect of a crossover relationship, keeping spidey's identity a secret w/ a (possibly) high profile g/f, and a colossus vs spidey drunken bar brawl ;)

As was mentioned earlier, Ultimate Colossus prefers the company of men. However Spidey and Iceman can fight.

I like the idea of a crossover relationship. Although too bad Kitty and Bobby had to be broken up. It seems obvious that that wasn't planned originally when they hooked up a few months ago.

I don't know if this is gonna last. After all, Kitty just came down from a failed relationship with a guy(Bobby) who was using her as a placeholder for his ex(Rogue). If she gets the idea that Pete's using her as a placeholder for MJ(yeah, he dumped her, but that doesn't mean she's completely out of his system), I suspect that she's gonna tell him to lose her email address.

I don't know if this is gonna last. After all, Kitty just came down from a failed relationship with a guy(Bobby) who was using her as a placeholder for his ex(Rogue). If she gets the idea that Pete's using her as a placeholder for MJ(yeah, he dumped her, but that doesn't mean she's completely out of his system), I suspect that she's gonna tell him to lose her email address.

I really hope it lasts a long time. There are a lot of obstacles the two will have to surmount, but the truth is they also open the door for good stories. If Bendis can show stories where the two develop strong feelings for each other and really want to hold onto their relationship, I think we'll all start rooting for them to stay together despite problems with secret ID's, bigotry, and ex-boyfriends/girlfriends.

And besides, I really really want Ultimate Kitty to be happy. Both she and her 616 counterpart have endured so much rotten luck in romance -- her first boyfriend broke up with her, other men have ignored her, betrayed her, revealed themselves to be gay, or sent e-mails to ex-girlfriends and accidentally sent her a copy. I hope Peter can keep her happy for a long time and vice versa.

Peter and MJ can work on the veneer as a normal couple, but Peter and Kitty can't do that, if she's out public and they are seen together as Shadow Cat and Spider-Man it won't take much for someone to deduce Peter is Spidey or they hurt Peter to get at the X-Men.

Plus... when the X-Men all met Peter and his friends before none of them recognized them. She has a pretty average look so not everyone will… I’m sure someone will.

I thought this was a pretty cool issue.I've never thought of pairing up Kitty Pryde and Peter Parker before.It'll be interesting to see how its played out in the monthly book.

Well, if the latest issue of USM means anything, Peter and Kitty won't be together for long. (And yes, I suspect that it takes place before the Annual). The first time the Black Cat turns up, Kitty is going to stalk off. After all, her last boyfriend cheated on her. And Peter is only human.<g>

Still, I like the idea of a Spidey/Kitty romance.
