I'm concerned that I have way too many "Hero X is kinda... gay" gags.

Opinions, please.

I dunno - where's your blog?

EDIT: OOOOOH! Link clicky thingy!!!

Uhm... I dunno about homophobic.

Maybe obsessed with gayosity.

Hiding something?

Eh, if you're homophobic, then superdickery is an adjunct of godhatesfags.com.

Or, in simple terms, no.

Batman and Superman are riding a giant phallic object.

That's either implied or the artist has some issues to work you. You are merely pointing out the obvious.

And nah, you just find 'em, it's not your fault any comic from before 1980 is totally ignorant in that regard.

No you're not homophobic. I wouldn't be too concerned about pandering to the PC crowd because your blog is just fine.

Feeling better about it now.

I'd like the onpinion of some of our homosexual posters though.

I meant the latter, but if the former had one, that would be fascinating to read.

I'm not picky, bert will do.

Heck, I'll even take a bi-sexual!

Of course not. It isn't your fault Golden and Silver Age comics are so full of unintentional homoeroticism. If you don't highlight it for the amusement of all, someone else will. Well okay, someone else does, but you know what I mean.

Get some modern age ones...

Like that issue of Uncanny X-Men, where Kitty Pryde points at Juggernaut and asks, "What's that sticking out of Juggernaut's pants?" to Storm.

I think it was #361 or somewhere around there.

Sorry, but rule #1 of WWTT? is that I ahve to actually read the comic book in question.

I'm working my way through runs naturally. Finishing up World's Finest (and let me tell you, Busiek is a breath of fresh air after Kraft!), then starting on Defenders.

After that, I think it's time for the FF or Namor.

I dunno what's worse, that Cap was soliciting for underage 'tang in the comics, that he used the old "Broadway Show" ruse, or that he has a assistant to help him sort through the candidates.

Why? Are you afraid of gays?

Just my little shot at the fact that I hate the term homophobic. A phobia is a fear, not a dislike or hatred.

I'll step aside now.

Oh...and I think the blog is funny, Morts.

Ouch.

That's just gotta hurt.

And don't take it the wrong way, but it's not so much as the stories were so GOOD as it was that Kraft's whole run was just impossible to read.

The Pantheon? Please DC, never bring them back.

And I can't believe that anyone thought that The Swordfish and the Baraccuda were a good idea.

StoneGold

Honestly though, it's all in the context. If Batman is patting Robin on the ass, that's gay. If you're just using gay as a synonym for something sucking, it's probably not homophobia, but it is socialization towards giving a negative connotation to gays. Granted, that's not your fault, more society at large's, but if you don't want to feed into it, just pay a little closer attention to what you write.

God that post was so gay.

Liberace gay.

I think it can be argued that following the continuing adventures of muscle-bound he-men who wear skin-tight leotards and tights implies a bit of homoeroticism on the part of the reader. Yeah, there's the occasional Power Girl archetype to inject some sexual confusion back into the mix, but for the most part in superhero comics it's sweaty guys physically interacting with other sweaty guys. Not unlike professional wrestling - another homoerotic activity bordering on campy.

I mean, look at the Batman TV show from the sixties. It was intentionally super-gay to the point of having Liberace as a villain, for crying out loud.

Dr. Wertham in "Seduction of the Innocent" back in the early fifties basically accused Bruce Wayne of founding NAMBLA, and saw Wonder Woman as a lesbian archetype, particularly the all-woman Amazon island locale.

And a word about my particular niche in the hobby, Golden Age comics (1940-1956, depending on who you talk to). Two words: phallic imagery. Tons of it. Usually balanced out with bondage scenarios that would appeal to your most devoted sado-masochist, and "headlight" covers featuring torpedo breasts that stood out more than Pamela Anderson in a meat locker. Lingerie, crotch shots, bend-over poses, check out Betty and Veronica's earliest incarnations - they look more like Jane Russell and Mamie Van Doren than teenagers.

Lately, writers have been playing up the homoerotic nature of the wardrobe, the sweaty grappling, etc. I'm thinking Bendis, in particular (except his dawn of man monkey-fucking in Powers might have been a red herring to take attention away from it.)

Comics have always been about sex, from the 1930's Tijuana Bibles showing Tillie the Toiler, Superman, Popeye, Dagwood and other comic icons in full pornographic glory to today's constant sexual ambiguity and openly diverse sexual orientations of characters including superheros.

Anyone who thinks sexual imagery and connotation, both homo and hetero haven't been around since the Yellow Kid are just kidding themselves.

All in all, I think Morts, you're just showing us pretty amusing versions of the double entendre, whether drawn or written. But I would argue that you're just showing the funny part, the serious sexual undertones are also there in spades....

I've been having a lot of those lately. But they just continue rather than waking me up. Frankly, given a choice, I'd rather feel stressed during the day. Assuming such dreams are some sort of anxiety manifestation.

And the blog would come off as homophobic if you were using 'gaaaay' as a generic insult for the pictures, regardless of their message. But not only do some of them genuinely have homoerotic overtones, those aren't the only ones you do. You also have all the male chauvinist pig ones. So I'd say you're fine.

It's messed up, as my days have been so anxiety free lately, but I just CANNOT sleep lately.

I get to sleep fine, I just don't stay asleep. One night I was literally waking up every 60 minutes.

I think part of it is Tot playing musical beds.

I don't have a rocket wee-wee picture.

That's depressing beyond words.

I also skipped a bunch of WF covers, since Superdickery has 'em.

But soon, soon I will have The Defenders!

As soon as I force myself to finish the CRAP that was the last year of World's Finest.

Seriously, that last year is mind-numbingly bad.
