View Full Version : What things have actually surpassed the hype surrounding them?
We live in a world of hype. Everything is touted as the "Next Big Thing", but in general, these things disappoint.
Have you ever experienced anything that not only lived up to the hype, but improbably, surpassed it? Have you ever encountered anything that was sold as seeming too good to be true, only to be not only as good as advertised, but actually better?

I thought this thread would be great. Instead, it's just kind of meh.
Or I could have said...
Yeah, I heard all these great things about banging your mom, but she's really just kind of average in the sack.

Think back to the mid 70's for this kind of Rock article:
"Is Bruce Springsteen the next Bob Dylan?"
Well, no. No he wasn't.
What he was was the "first Bruce Springsteen." Which turned out to be an entirely different animal, but ultimately surpassed the possibilities of being the "next Dylan."
And that's NOT a slam on Dylan in any way shape or form.

Yeah. The first time I saw my wife I thought. "Man. She's beautiful. I bet she'd be great in bed". From that moment on I subconsciously hyped up her sexual performance in my head. Then, when we actually did it the only thought I was left with was "Oh hell yes!!!"

Oh, man, that reminds me. I was in a store in Coeur d' Alene and they had haggis in a can. I thinking it would almost have to be better than I was thinking it would be.

You haven't eaten the school lunches I was served in elementary and high school. Not that that stuff was ever hyped.
I suppose it lived up to the hype about how nasty it was, and then some.

Interesting. I've always wanted to go skydiving as I have a huge fear of heights and I kinda figured it'd be a damn fine way of curing myself of that little fear. Maybe I'd have a heart attack though so I don't know.

The only thing cooler than this would probably be combining the two. I imagine that would be a right bit of fun.

Even if you didn't have a heart attack, there's no guarantee that under such a condition of pure terror, you'll have the presence of mind to pull that cord that will save your life.

I once ate a live Tasmanian Wichity Grub. It's pretty common practice down under but I must say it tasted a hell of a lot worse than it was supposed to according to the hype supplied by my neighbour at the time.

Yes. It would suck supremely to forget that little tidbit of information.

That's why you generally jump tandem your first dive. If you don't pull the cord, the guy you're strapped to does.

That's good to know.
Going *splat* from some ungodly height is not my preferred way of dying.
Getting destroyed as part of an onslaught of deadly alien beings? That I could go for.

Hopefully, he's not frightened out of his mind as well.

The guy you're strapped to has already earned his license, so odds are, he knows what he's doing.

For me, it would have to be jazz music. A few people lauded it, trying to recommend it to me. I thought it would be good in the first place, but when I first heard it, I was practically in paradise.

Now here's a smart man!
I think LeBron James has surpassed all of the hype around him when he entered the NBA.

They take that into consideration. There are three ways I'm familiar with to make your first jump.
Tandem- here they strap you to an experience skydiver and he/she does all the work. You get a decent freefall and they decide how and where to turn and when to flare the chute for landing.
Static Line- This is being used much less. With static line, you hook a 50' long seatbelt to the plane and when you jump it pulls your chute for you. With this, you don't get much free fall, but you control all other aspects of your chute and your jump.
Acclerated Freefall Training- With AFF you jump alone, like static line, but you have two instructors that jump with you and fall right next to you. They tell you when to pull your chute and if you freak out, they will reach over and pull it for you. In addition, they have altimeter sensitive deployment devices that will automatically deploy your chute if you drop below a certain height.
When I went, the outfit I went with only lost one person and that's because they girl freaked you and steered herself into a lake and drowned.
I would reccommend it highly to anyone.

The one thing recently that lived up to the hype is "chessmaster" for playstation 2. God i love this game.even if i not as good as i thought i was :(
What also falls in to this heading is "driving a car solo for the first time" and joining the mile high club.
To top the list off is: dvd's,star wars, and various comic books that came out this year. the ultimates for one.
