I've been searching all morning, but I can't locate anything on this. When Rayner/GL became Ion, Superman was shown sporting the S symbol or a black background, but all current imagery shows the standard yellow background. When exactly did he adopt the "kingdom come" look?
Was it due to the Red/Blue Superman arc? It's just all somewhat confusing

I think Superman sort of adopted the new S symbol with the black background after OWAW , i think to mourn for his missing pa Kent at that time and all the people who died in the war. He changed it back later to his old symbol once the mourning period is over which i believe was after the "ending battle" storyarc.
