Introduction

Let’s try this again! We are back for a brand new edition of WDS. Let’s see if I can finish this one!

The Comic Review

I hate Stony. Seriously, I do. Because he was actually right about something. The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is a fantastic read, and if you have not checked it out, do so. The story follows Uncle Scrooge from his youth as a poor boy in Scotland up through his first appearance in a comic, with Donald Duck and Huey, Dewey, and Louie.

Scrooge goes through many hardships. He shines shoes, searches for oil, and hunts for gold. And each time, he leaves a little wiser, but none the richer. Until eventually, he strikes it rich, and finds out that everything he has been searching for, was in the adventure and getting there, not in his riches or all of the money in the world. He achieves his dreams, and finds that his love is in how he got there. The story is epic and wonderfully constructed, with Scrooge trudging along to finally hitting it big, and then slowly changing personality wise.

Rosa is a very good artist of making the duck characters look as recognizable as always, while adding realism to everything. The non-talking animals are fairly real, as are the environments and Rosa pays attention to the little details in his stories. He places events around Scrooge that happen during the time frame of the story. He adds real people to the stories, and makes this story about talking ducks as real as one can.

Rosa also includes little facts about what stories and events he refers to in each chapter, as well as other interesting information. An interesting commentary to each story, only adding to the value of the trade. This is a beautiful trade, and deserves a special spot on your book shelf.

The DVD Review

The director of Akira returns. And he didn’t just rest on his laurels and do the same thing over again. Instead he went in a different direction with Steamboy. The world is not a dark, dystopian society. Gangs do not run rampant. Instead, this is a past where the world is on the verge of being steam powered. One family, the Steam family, are the forerunners of this advanced age. The grandfather and father have played the biggest roles, while the son, Ray Steam, is an inventor in his own right. But, when a package arrives from his grandfather, he will experience an adventure of his own.

Steamboy is a visually stunning movie. The style is wonderful, and the music is fantastic. The audio of the movie is stunning. This is a very cinematic movie. And the fighting is just fun to watch, even in the dark moments. The movie has fun, and is fun to watch. It’s exhilarating, exciting in the action. While the story behind it is a look at science versus its military uses. It’s just a fantastic movie, I can’t say anything else about it. The only minus is that the movie is a bit dark. Turn off the lights to view it. And turn the sound up.

Don’t hate anime. And don’t be a hater of this movie. Go rent/buy Steamboy!

Weekend Waster

Write a story. Go ahead, do it. It’s not hard to do. And you’ll feel better once you do. But you have to write a full story. Finish something, and then post it over on the Never Ending Forum. It’s not a hard thing to do, it doesn’t even have to be a good story. It just has to be a story. Length is no issue. You can do one paragraph, or ten pages. But the main thing to do is to write. Write, write and write some more. But if you have not got the picture yet: WRITE!

Editorial

Will this be a victory? The one way the HeroesCon/Wizard World Atlanta ending can be a victory against Wizard will depend on if the people who pledged support to HeroesCon in their stance against Wizard will still go to and support the convention. If they do not, then all that shows is that they were flicking their noses at Wizard, but really do not care about supporting anything. This is not a dig to those who will not be able to show up to the convention due to outside circumstances, but to any who promised to go merely as an “f’ you” to Wizard and never had any real plans to attend the show.

The victory is already tarnished, with Wizard now saying that they had not planned on that date, and them trying to say that the dates were just rumors. If many of the people who promised to show up back out now, it will just weaken HeroesCon, and the other independent conventions in the future. Wizard will see it as the true test, and if people do drop out, they might go for broke in 2007, knowing that they might still crush the other cons. The build up needs to continue, and creators will need to prove that they will keep their word.

To truly be a victory, the victors must follow it through to the end. I hope to see everyone who has said they will be at next year’s convention there. Then, something special will have happened.

The Wrap Up

There we go. Another fine finished episode of WDS. Not too bad if I do say so myself. It's a bit short, but not too bad. Now, if I could just do it on a regular basis, and include everything I want to. Good luck with that. I’m too lazy and have nowhere enough free time. Damn you work! And damn you SDCC for taking all of my money!

Pol's not too good of an alcoholic, though. Tune in next week to see what I mean.

You should. I really liked it and I am most definitely not a fan of most anime that I've seen. I even listened to some of the dubbed version on the DVD and it's really interesting. The accents are good and even though the dialogue has changed, it actually seems to suit the time period even more than the subtitled version.
