The Cure. I'd get Disintegration.

Siousxie and the Banshees - I really liked Hyaena, mainly because of the song "Dazzle". Everything I've heard by them is pretty good though, I love Siouxsie.

Jane's addiction - Never got into them

Kate Bush - I'd start with Hounds Of Love, but The Dreaming is my favorite.

The Pixies - Doolittle, which is either generally cited as the band's best or competing alongside Surfer Rosa for the title, is a work of guitar pop genius. The Pixies surprised me with their ability to create genuinely catchy melodies that competed even alongside that of more polished bands like the Jam, the Byrds, and the Clash (I think they even out strip Husker Du in that regard) all while building them around really weird lyrics. Also helps that it contains "Wave of Mutilation" which ranks among the greatest pop songs ever made. (No really.)

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation pretty much ranks up there as a great guitar rock album alongside Axis: Bold As Love, Led Zeppelin II, Blank Generation, and Marquee Moon. Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore take guitar playing away from the more conventional routes of rock soloing and pop chord changes to exploring the texture of pure sound through unconventional tunings and cranking the amps to the point of near death. (Apparently they never used effects pedals until the 90s.) Come for the classic anthem "Teenage Riot", stay to hear them go nuts on "Rain King" and "Eric's Trip." Be sure to listen to it with headphones on too.

The Cure-Disintigration is their best IMO

Jane's Addiction-Nothing's Shocking, but technically they only had two records and you can't lose with either of them.

My first exposure to Pixies was Doolittle and Surfer Rosa (they can fit together on one CD). I do like Doolittle a bit better, but you can't go wrong with either one.

As far as The Cure, stay away from anything that's not Disintegration or Pornography. I really like those two albums (particularly Disintegration...excellent album), but everything else from them has really turned me off. I guess parts of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me are okay.

you've gotten good responses, so I'll just add (and agree in most cases):

Pixies -- "DoLittle"

Sonic Youth -- "Daydream Nation"

Thin Lizzy -- no idea, not a fan
The Cure -- as an older Cure fan, I didn't really care for "Disintigration", tho I do like some of the songs on it. Personally, I'd go for "the Head on the Door" (which has thier huge early hit "InBetween Days" on it"

Siouxsie and the Banshees -- as others have said, all the albums are pretty good and have high-spots (as does Siouxsie's splinter band, The Creatures).
If you like the "popular" stuff, go for "Superstition" that one has "Kiss them for Me" on it. My fave album by her is "Tinderbox" and that one has "cities in Dust" (one of the "big" early hits), and a close second would be "Thru the Looking Glass" which is an album of some amazing covers -- "the Passenger", "Strange Fruit", "this Wheel's on Fire" and many more. the early albums tend to be a bit more experimental, but there ARE two Greatest Hit's albums available, and either would be a great place to start.

Hellacopters (never heard of em) :)

Jane's Addiciton -- I vote for "Nothing's Shocking". . just based on the brilliance of "the Mountian Song"

Kate Bush -- hmmmm. . . I'll go w/ "the Kick Inside" based on it including "Wuthering Heights" as well as "the Man w/the Child in His Eyes". Also good are: "Hounds of Love" (due to "running up that hill"), "The Sensual World" which has the stunning "Love and Anger", and of course "the Whole Story" , a greatest hits CD. . tho "Dreaming" is good too. .

Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: A Retrospective

The second CD on this is killer. I have a few of their earlier albums and they never did much for me, but when they weeded out the filler, they stand up as a pretty good band. Not great but pretty good.

I'm with Bib. Try the greatest hits albums for an initial taste. Less subjective than individual albums too.
