View Full Version : Sorry for the silly question but when did Robin die?

In Dark Night it's obvious that he has died and a friend of mine told me how (The Joker blew him up) and that it happened in another story. I want to read this. Please, where do I look.

Keep in mind there have been three (possibly four) Robins in DC continuity. The first, and most widely known is Dick Grayson, the circus performer who had his parents killed and who Batman took in. He eventually quit being Robin and became Nightwing in the New Teen Titans series.

He's still alive in DC continuity as Nightwing.

The second Robin was Jason Todd. Originally Jason was very much a Dick Grayson clone in terms of personality and abilities, even havin the circus acrobatics in his past. After DC rebooted everything with Crisis on Infinite Earths he gained the origin story of (roughly) a young street punk who tries to steal the wheels off the Batmobile and is taken in by Batman. He had more of a grating personality that many people found annoying.

So DC took a phone poll. Call a number, pay a cost, and vote on whether the Jason Todd Robin should live or die. In the end the "die" vote barly won, and Jason Todd was killed in Batman 428 (December 1988 publication date). He died by getting beat on by the Joker with a crowbar, then "blowed up real good."

Then there's a lot of crap that happened after that, but I assume you're not interested in that.

Edit: The death was actually in a four part story arc, from Batman 426-429. The title is "A Death in the Family," it'd probably be under that if it's in trade format.

Hey! Thanks, that explained more things that I had not even thought of asking.

So, where does Carrie Kelly fit in?

To me she's the only real Robin...

And if you want to get technical, there were two Robins who have been killed ... the other being a second "even-numbered" Robin (IV), Stephanie Brown. Although most recognize her more as Spoiler as she was only Robin for like six or seven issues.

Alternate future. DKR doesn't fit into canon, so it's more of an Elseworlds (DC's What Ifs) than anything else.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, the death of the second Robin, Jason Todd, was mentioned in Dark Knight Returns before it actually happened in continuity.

As for Carrie Kelley, the future Robin, she only appeared in DKR and DKSA, which are not officially part of continuity (which means they did not "really" happen, whatever that means).

Unlike the rest of the Batman stories which are all based on reality... :p :)

Sarcasm was already heavily implied in my post.

Spooky, no? :) Not only that, but remember Green Arrow very nearly got his arm cut off many years later, too.

That was just Miller spitballing that Jason would eventually die in the line of duty, not because he knew he'd be killed in the present. Far as we know, DKR Jason could've lived to be twenty.

How did she die? Also, how did Batman react after having lost 2 Robins?

Stephanie Brown was fired from being Robin by Batman in the latest War Games arc due to either her incompetance, Batman's impossibly high standards, or a little of both depending on your interpretation of the events. She finally died after being tortured to death by Black Mask, who then went on do do what I consider unprobable things and in the end never got his due. I'm sure you can find a hell of a lot of information and discussion in it via a google search, or even searching this board.

Personally I consider the arc to be badly written. But that's neither here nor there.

Batman's reaction, thus far, to Steph's death seems to be a shrug and a "damn shame" comment. Then again Tim Drake's reaction seems to have been just about the same, and he'd been dating her for probably close to a year (longer in real time). Then again it was kinda sidelined by Tim's father getting killed a month or two later in Identity Crisis.

But, as I said, I didn't like the arc. So I'm rather bias.

I know. I just had to say it myself too. It's a fault of mine.

This sounds stunningly terrible. It's stories like this that prevent me from reading Batman monthly...
