Just flipping through this week's CSN, and noticed that the artist on the new SOULFIRE book is Micah Gunnell. It was picked as one of the "Top Two Dozen for August"!

OUR Micah Gunnell? :p

Very nice blurb in the "Why Should You Care?" description...

Not only is Michael Turner a super-star artist in his own right, but he also has an amazing skill for discovering and nurturing new talent - and this series, masterminded by Turner, features the work of two of his discoveries: writer J.T. Krul and new artist Micah Gunnell.

GO Micah! Big fan of your stuff, and I may just pick this up to see how you do!

That's awesome! It's too bad he didn't go further in the competition.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I was in CBI2. The Soulfire thing is pretty old news actually as that was my first project there. I'm almost finished with my second series, "Shrugged", and after that will be doing a project at Marvel.

Congrats on the Marvel gig. So hey, can you tell us what it's been like working for Aspen? Did you have to relocate and work in their studio? What kind of stuff did they have you do when you first started (like did you jump on a book right away or did they have you work on other stuff first?)

Thanks Charles! Well, when first they flew me to their studio(at that time in Marina Del Rey) for a few weeks and I did some different drawings...They had me draw anatomical stuff...Hands, faces, bodies, etc. It was weird because I thought I was pretty good at all of those things at the time, but I actually learned alot from Michael Turner, Koi Turnbull, Peter Steigerwald and some of the other artists there. Once they decided they liked me, they asked me to move there, which I did. They were pretty awesome about it too because they even hooked me up with a place to stay for a few months until I could find my own apt(Thanks Peter!).
I lived in LA for a year, and at that time everyone worked out of the studio. After that first year I moved to Anaheim...Then back to Maryland for a bit...and now I'm in San Francisco:) After I moved to Anaheim the studio thing kind of got less and less cohesive...most of the artists wanted to work from home, so now Aspen is in a different location(Culver City), and its not really as much of a studio. Some of the colorists, Editors and production people still work from the studio, but all the pencillers work from their respective locations. Aspen has been great for me though. I really feel like they've given me some opportunities I wouldn't have gotten elsewhere, and they're good people.

That's cool, Micah. Steigerwald reviewed my work a couple years ago and it was a good experience. If any other artists read this and hit the conventions to show your work I strongly suggest stopping by the Aspen booth to see if you can talk to the guy - based on my review and what I heard from the reviews before mine he seemed to be able to give an accurate assessment of the work shown and appropriate direction.
