What are Amazo's powers?

Amazo can duplicate the powers of any superhuman it gets close to. There have been different versions over the years, and with it different specifics: how many different powers it can copy at once, and how long it can retain them. The last time I remember Amazo showing up (in a JLA issue by Mark Millar), it had all the powers of every Justice Leaguer it had ever copied, and was pretty well unbeatable.

I believe Amazo has also, on occasion, stolen or leeched powers rather than copying them. It varies.

Yup. Amazo, just like Madonna, changes every time it wants to annoy people.

The last times he showed up, though, was in the late series Hourman.

One of his changes involved him stealing people's humanity(plus their power if they had any) and he started calling himself HUMANAZO. The only problem is that he couldn't steal powers from robots.

My favorite appearance though, was when Amazo decided instead to steal Hourman's friends instead of powers. Sadly, he didn't go around calling himself Friendazo.

in the morrison jla run, amazo copied the power of any member of the jla--regardless of where they were (no proximity effect.) they just need to be a member of the team

True, but Millar wrote that one. It was a good one-off and made me really appreciate the Atom.

Amazo has most consistently shown the abilities of the original 7 JLAers(Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and Batman) as well as the ability to copy the powers of those in his vicinity.

In an issue of JLA written by Millar, he had the ability to copy the powers of any current JLA member.

In Rock of Ages, the alternate timeline Amazo had the powers of the aforementioned original JLA.

In Hourman, aside from what Bat-Mite mentioned, he also took on the persona of Timazo, which had the powers of Supes, MM, Flash, Black Canary, Aquaman, and half of the robot Hourman's own powers.

Were those two abilities from the same classic Amazo? I always thought he just had the powers of the League, as given to him by Ivo, and that was it. Could he also copy others from the very beginning?

That was a neat one, as his powers worked on a conceptual level - anybody that was considered a member of the League was automatically added to his catalogue of powers. Once the League was "disbanded" he was powerless. Kind of cool.

There was also the stripped down version that Batman and Robin (or was it Nightwing?) recently took down - I believe it lacked the power ring and lasso.

I believe the absorbtion cells that Amazo uses to dupe powers was mentioned in his initial appearance, and those same cells are later mentioned when he uses his powers to dupe others farther down the line.

As for only having the powers of the JLA when he first encountered them...well, he was programmed to fight them specifically, and I don't recall offhand any other hero intervening in the classic comics, which means he never had the chance to dupe anyone else.

He seems to be kinda like the 616 Mimic in that sense: he's got a set amount of powers that stick(JLA for Amazo, X-men for Mimic), and the ability to dupe others as well(and both usually require physical proximity, as well). And also like Mimic, he's got a few one-shot or short cameos in which his powers are somewhat different than the norm.

Edit: Replaced "designed" with "programmed" as the latter word is the truer of the 2.
