View Full Version : Dark Detective... want another?

Dark Detective #6 shipped and it contains the fate of Silver, Joker and a House of DEATH (cue ominous music)

On the very last page where they normally preview the next issue it says "Batman Dark Detective has drawn to a close. We're eager to do a sequel based on your response"

I have no idea how well this sold (anyone have the numbers from icv2 or diamond? I couldn't find em) BUT my question is: Did you like the series overall? Would you buy a sequel?

I LOVED it! It is (IMO) how Batman SHOULD be. He's able to kid, laugh, be serious and still kick serious ass. I loved the O'Neil/Adams era Batman and this (and the original run now in TPB) was a continuation of that. This is Batman at his best.

I loved the series, the story, the art and I HOPE Silver is used a bit more!

I WANT A SEQUEL! :D :D

My only problem was that this was an elseworld story without the label but yea I’d like to see another six issue mini but I would want it to be in continuity with the other bat books not that continuity means much in bat books these days.

Was this book definitely OUT of continuity? I thought it was supposed to be in continuity which is why Rogers made sure Batman was hunted by the police as per the current status of Batman comics, but then that doesn't really explain the Joker's appearance since he's supposed to still be on the lam.

A definitive YES. Although I'll admit that there wasn't a lot of "dark" in Dark Detective--for the better. If for nothing else I'm there just for the return of thought balloons. A great tool when used sparingly.

I loved it. But my signature probably told you that.

Not to mention he's having sex with Silver when Catwoman's his current girl.

YES!!!!!!!

Dark Detective features Batman the way he should be. It was a nice escape from all the depressing Infinite Crisis goings-ons. It was nice to see Batman act like a hero again. Heck, it was nice to see Batman act like an adult again. I loved the use of captions and thought balloons. Seeing their use made me realize how much I missed them, they really do help set the mood of the story.

Let's not stop at Batman, I would love to see Englehart handle the rest of the DC Universe. I'm looking forward to his return to the Justice League. I just want my DCU back.

Does complete adherance to continuity REALLY matter? I mean, Azzurello's Batman arc featured a non-mutated Killer Croc.... but most recently he's been mutated again. It shouldn't matter as long as the story is good!

This must take place before Red Hood's return

I voted no. I thought the whole romantic Batman was just trite and ham-fisted. I don't really know the entire history of Bruce and Silver, but her damsel in distress act and the harlequin romance moments just didn't gibe with me.

I know that I would want a more compassionate Batman, instead of the uptight one that we have been seeing lately, but I've found his sexual tensions with Catwoman and Diana more dynamic and interesting. His love intersts with 'civilians' tend to be overwrought and out of character.

Croc was temporarily cured by the end of Hush and now he's relapsed.

The series felt so...old. Like the writer was still stuck in the 70s. The dialogue was just terrible. And man, was it corny.

And what horible continuity. Joker's not in hiding. Scarecrow's normal. Two-Face isn't cured. Batman seems to have forgotten about Selina completely.

Ugh. If there's a sequel, I won't buy it, unless the writer learns how to write a 2005 comic instead of a 1970 comic.

Some people like 1970's style comics. Frankly, the 2005 model is starting to depress me.

I didn't think it was the best Batman in years or antying, but it was damn good to see those creators back on the title. I had bought some trades with their stuff and it is damn good. This mini series was also dman good and a nice change of pace. While I'm not too big of a fan, as I was born in the 80s, I do really enjoy their work and would like to see more.

Then agian I'd also like to see some of the 90s creators come back, but I guess I have to wait like 20 years for that.

I picked up the first couple of issues, and then dropped it. It was like a really lame version of Batman:TAS. I honestly don't know why I even bought the second issue, after Joker made an American Idol joke I was all done.

So no sequel for me.

I HOPE DC smartens up and gets Norm Breyfogle back on Batman... SOONER rather than later! I don't want to have to wait 20 years for that! He's too damn good.

I voted Hell no. I didn't like this series at all. This is NOT how MY Batman acts. Jumping down elevator shafts head first after the Joker, and then splatting on the elevator? I could do better than that. I mean, there were just so many things wrong with this Batman I can't even name them all.

Granted, there were MANY cool Batman moments. Many of them. A lot of them were in the last issue. Most of them were in the issue where he had the big fight with the Scarecrow, THAT was my favorite moment. Awesome.

But, no, I DO NOT want a sequel.

The first time around, Englehart/Rogers' Batman was exciting to see, fun to read. This time, it was disappointing. I found the writing, the dialogue, stiff and flat, and the drawing, while well-executed, unexciting: layouts very ordinary, pov very sedentary, characters as stiff as their lines, without any fluidity suggesting movement. Sigh. Maybe I just had too much hope and anticipation.

Sure I'll try a second series, but I doubt I'll follow it through to conclusion as I did this, if it seems more of the same.

I thought the ending sucked. I kept trying to see if some if my pages had gotten stuck together. But really, I don't care if they make another or not. I'd get it of course, but I'm not waiting on pins and needles.
One word......."Meh." (shrugging shoulders as I say it, too.)

You can't go home again.

This was like Claremont and Byrne's run on JLA. I spent most of the time thinking, "They used to be SO good!"

I don't care, but that's just because I can't afford to pick up every mini with an interesting concept behind it.

It's funny but that was a lot of my problem with Jim Lee's Hush. jim draws awesome posters... but has no real sense of movement of sequential storytelling but I found Dark Detective had what Loeb/Lee missed.

I had the impression it was a semi-sequel to "Strange Apparitions", which was the famous Englehart Batman run. That said, I wouldn't think this is in continuity, even though most of that run was.

Now, let's go with the idea this is in continuity, then it must definitely take place between No Man's Land Batman and the Hush storyline. In other words, with no Catwoman girlfriend and classic Two-Face.

It's really up to the reader ;)

The writer himself said in an interview before it came out that it was set post War Games. Which is why the cops are after Bats again.

So how did it end anyway? Did Bat's and Silver break up again...and why? I really don't care too much for Silver.....she just seems like the typical damsel in distress instead of the strong woman I keep hearing she is supposed to be. At least that was how she was portrayed on the covers. I didn't get a chance to read any of this series...If someone could fill me in a little...it would be much appreciated. ;)

I was pretty bored with it. I dont remember the original Rogers/Austin art team being so "Corman-esque." And I really didn't root for any of the characters at all.
I wouldn't buy the second set. Probably wouldn't even skim through it at the shop.

I voted Don't Care. While i didn't mind the characterization of Batman himself so much, any scene with Silver in it made me cringe. She was such a one-dimensional character. The dialogue was like a bad soap opera.

I thought the art was fairly decent, but the writing and the dialogue just seemed to get worse with each issue. Dropped it after part 4.

I'm going to fall in with the Don't Care Camp, it was fun as a one off, but I couldn't take this as a full time bat story.

I did like the comment about the return of thought bubbles - seeing them on the page made the book seem so old fashioned.

I just finished issue six today (I normally buy bi-weekly) and I'm kinda mixed on if I want more or not... I definitely would like to see more of Rogers version of Batman. But I found that the plot felt kinda off through a good portion of the series, even though I liked the initial concept (vote for me or I'll kill you). I think this would've worked better as an arc in a monthly where you would have a better excuse to draw things out with random villian appearences than a mini.

Sans the love story, Dark Detective was a great little mini series.

I'm completely with you on all points. One thing that bugged me to no end on this book is the characterisation of Silver. They just ruined her. They way they had her jumping into bed with Bruce so easily, even though she engaged to Gregory did not endear me to her at all. It actually made me loose respect for her all together.

I voted no.

Not to mention he's having sex with Silver when Catwoman's his current girl.

Since when? I can't remember any issue where Bruce and Selina admit to being, or any evidence that they are in an exclusive or commited relationship. Yes they have hooked up in two issues of Catwoman (32&39) but that seemed to be more about just sex (especially in 39). In issue 40 of Catwoman, Slam and Selina are left at the end contemplating their relationship. And in the OMAC Project it's obvious Bruce still has feelings for Sasha.
I am not saying that they don't have feelings towards each other. But it has never struck me as being anything more than the feelings one might have towards an ex.

Englehart called his first run the definitive Batman and he was right. He called this a return to the definitive batman and he was wrong. It's a throwback Batman. But I loved it.
