Could I have my username changed to Gene M. please? This is strictly for reasons of privacy.
You do realize that your signature still has your full name in it, right?

Is there a chance we can get a name change as a one shot deal if it wasn't to our name?

Nope. Names changes are only done when it is to the poster's real name or similar.

Plus Superman is already taken.

The account name is taken by a user who has not posted any posts so it will not show up in the normal user database.

Hi, I can't spell. I meant to name myself "LewMoxonsGhost" - after the mobster who is responsible for killing Bruce Wayne's parents. Can you please correct my name's spelling and capitalization issues?

Matt Algren

From the original post:

we will only change your handle for you if it's from a handle to a real name or at least something that resembles a real name. Why? Because we like seeing real names on our forums. Handles are fun for a time, but sometime's it just hard to respond to someone or take someone seriously who has a handle like "Comic Boy Man From Mars." We encourage the use of real names.

The chances of getting a Handle changed unless it is to a real name is pretty slim, so please do not request it unless there are some unique circumstances involved.

Well, I thought I did explain the unique circumstances involved... I misspelled it. I have noticed that about half of CBR users are not using "real" names... and how could you prove the other half are real and not pseudonyms? Isn't it better to reveal your real name to people under a more private circumstance? I don't look forward to an uptick in spam mail personally. I think this policy limits creativity and imagination. If people can't make up a fantastical name in a Comic Book Forum, where the heck are they supposed to go? Please relook this standing, for us fanboys who can't spell, and everyone else who prefers to reveal their name in a closed session.

LewMoxinsghost
02-23-2008, 07:41 PM
By the way, How is LewMoxinsghost not sound something like a real name??? Only one additional word has been added. For all you know Lew Moxon is my real name. At this point I will settle for just "Lew Moxon". My name isn't anything like "Comic Boy Man from Mars" or even "Unicorn Commando Sniper Team Leader from Planet Zorkoon" but what would be wrong with wanting those names (aside from their utter lame-ness)??? Not everyone wants to advertise who they are for perfectly legitimate reasons. I am not following the logic here.

I really enjoy CBR. Don't ban me because I make sense.

Matt
02-23-2008, 08:08 PM
Who said anything about banning anyone?

We certainly don't demand it and never would, but users do tend to have more credibility when they use a handle based around their real names. Therefore, we encourage that.

However, I do not have the time to spend going into the administration tools every time someone wishes to change their account names from one comic book based name to another.

Cheers.

LewMoxinsghost
02-23-2008, 08:26 PM
Isn't that essentially what you are doing? Banning people with fantastical names as best you can?

I don't want my name changed from one comic book based name to another, I want my original comic book name corrected due to spelling. Is this really hard to get? Does it really take that long to fix?

Typo Lad
02-23-2008, 09:02 PM
He's not banning anyone. He is, however, not changing a name unless it's to your real name.

he 'gets" what you want, but you're not going to get what you want.

LewMoxinsghost
02-23-2008, 10:27 PM
Spoken truly from someone who isn't using their real name either... and what a name! A name that means "I make typographical mistakes" .... oh, well, at least I am not alone. Maybe I should just change it and dump this one. It is kind of dumb anyway. I think I will keep the quote however... lol. It kills me that CBR seems to be encouraging people to make up real sounding fake names (lying) instead of just embracing the fact that a lot of folks don't want to go with their name and encouraging handles.

Matt
02-23-2008, 11:09 PM
No one is saying you can not use the handle of your choice. You are free to use whatever you wish.

However, there rules are quite clear that if you wish to change your existing account handle then I'll only go to that bother if your new choice is something akin to your real name.

And also please note that forum rules state that no one is to have multiple accounts unless under special circumstances.

I'm a bit confused by the 'uptick in spam mail' you're talking about. Why would you get more spam because you use your first name and last initial or some such?

I don't think you're thinking this through.
It kills me that CBR seems to be encouraging people to make up real sounding fake names (lying) instead of just embracing the fact that a lot of folks don't want to go with their name and encouraging handles.Huh?

Also, regarding the signature, how old are you?

Callie
02-25-2008, 07:10 PM
Hi! I'd like to change my username to "Cal-El", which is an abbreviation of my real first and last names (Callie El------) . I think that's still available. If that's problematic, "Callie" is fine, too.

LewMoxinsghost
02-25-2008, 09:59 PM
Ok, so, now you want me to not only advertise my real name, but also reveal my age? Would you also like a blood sample, mother's maiden name, physical address?

In that complex and unclear sentence you quoted, I was trying to say in simple terms this:
The current policy encourages users to lie about their real name if they do not wish to reveal them. Allowing and encouraging monikers of a different sort is encouraging users(the same ones who do not wish to use their real names) to use their imaginations instead of revealing their name or resorting to the convincing lie.

Last time I checked "Kal-El" was a character from Superman... "Cal-El" is too similar to that fantastical name, and as we all know those fantastical names are not encouraged here at COMIC BOOK Resources.

LOL

Are you guys for real or what? I can't wait for the part where you retalliate against me by granting Callie her wish and not mine...

For my PSA, and to answer your question: Spammers use software that searches the text found in online forums for names that match the pattern of an email address. These programs actually even generate common email addresses based on names they find. This is how the bulk of their mailing lists are formed. Now comes the part were people start insinuating that I am the one using them. Well, hate to disappoint, but that is not my cup of tea. I just read. Maybe too much. Maybe too many comic books with weird names. Actually, I think I read it somewhere here: http://www.419baiter.com/

I will gladly change the quote and publicly apologize for using it even- if you just please correct the spelling in my name. I don't understand why I'm being punished for the mistake.

Matt
02-25-2008, 11:44 PM
You can have a day off to cool down. I also deleted your signature which was borderline insulting a mod/admin - not cool.

It is not a difficult concept to understand. I offer to change peoples chosen account name to something resembling their real name, if they so wish. Not one user is forced to do such, no one twists anyone's arm to do such.

I do NOT change account names for any other reasons. Why? Because I do not have the time to go into the admin tools every time I would have to if I extended the conditions of the offer.

Seriously, calm down.

You know, I was only teasing and meant no disrespect to anyone. As I think my pm to you stated, I have no problem complying with the policy. I think I am still entitled to my opinion however, and to have my thoughts and feelings heard. And for the record I was never really even upset. I just didn't like having my name mocked and compared to something ridiculous, so that is why I advertised the quote. A pm to me stating that you found my teasing offensive would have been enough for me to remove it. This is just free expression the way I look at it... I am new here, so maybe things work differently around here than one might first believe. I enjoy the fellowship this forum provides- did not enjoy being banned. Pms or emails are a great way to communicate with me if there is some kind of personal problem with my belief system or the opinions I express here. I am known to edit old posts if something is not kosher.

And you have stated your opinions on the matter - five times. Since people are responding to your posts, you can probably assume that they're being heard as well. Having your opinions heard doesn't mean that people will agree with them.

LewMoxinsghost
02-27-2008, 01:36 PM
Actually, I think I only expressed it twice. The first time because of my, perhaps erroneous, perception of having my name mocked- not something that is generally associated with professional behavior. The second time in an attempt to clarify. I'm not trying to force my opinion on anyone by repitition or any other method. There seems to be an underlying desire here to turn this into something it isn't. Being outspoken can be a great quality, as others can attest- but I am not interested in being unwelcome. THough no one asked, I feel like the new kid being picked on by the neighborhood bully- but maybe that is not really the case. Is there no place for innocent ignorance here?

LewMoxinsghost
02-27-2008, 02:50 PM
I was referring to "LewMoxinsghost" being compared to "Comic Boy Man from Mars". But I guess the point is moot now... and like I said maybe my initial perception was off. Honestly, folks I'm chill now. I have no issues. All ist klar.
