Out of curiosity, whatever happened to Alan Grant. I enjoyed his Shadow of the Bat run, didn't he write almost the entire run himself? He did some great work on the Lobo series. Is he still writing comics?

He writes all the time for 2000 AD and Judge Dredd Megazine. Infact I'm pretty sure that's where he got his start. He's a mainstay on Judge Dredd along with series creator John Wagner. Grant's currently working on the Robo-Hunter revival, which I enjoy alot.

Here's is complete 2000 AD resume... (http://www.2000adonline.com/?zone=droid&page=thrills&Comic=2000AD&Field=Writer&choice=alang) oh and his Judge Dredd Megazine creds while I'm at it. (http://www.2000adonline.com/?zone=droid&page=thrills&Comic=Megazine&Field=Writer&choice=alang)

2000 AD rules, and Alan Grant is one of the reasons why.

There is a long interview with him on the 2000AD Review website. It starts here (http://www.2000adreview.co.uk/features/interviews/2005/grant/grant1.shtml)

Questions about his tenure at DC start here (http://www.2000adreview.co.uk/features/interviews/2005/grant/grant7.shtml)

Very interesting comments. Among other things, he discusses the undignified manner in which he was released from writing Batman and his thoughts on editors like Scott Peterson and Bob Schrek. One funny line about Schrek (which should be appreciated by Dredd fans):

"The best thing that could happen to Batman would be for Bob Shreck to take the long walk."

SOTB was created expressly for Alan and Norm Breyfogle, after their well-received work on Detective. Unfortunately, Norm left the book early in its run. They made a great team. Alan did indeed write most of the issues of this title.

I liked Alan on Batman a lot. His Ventriloquist and Scarface characters remain favorites of mine (though no one else seems to be able to do the characters justice). On the other hand, I hated Anarchy.

Alan was removed from SOTB at the same time that Moench was removed from Batman and Dixon from Detective, in order to bring in a whole new creative crew for No Man's Land.

I think that was a good move. Chuck Dixon and Alan Grant are both capable of good work, but they'd become staile on Batman. (Moench was stale to start off with)

I second that statement.

It'd still be nice to bring both of them back to DC for SOMETHING.

I second that statement.

I think the move sucked crap and Batman has sucked crap ever since.

And let's not forget this:

...by Alan Grant and Frank Quitely! I've no idea why this is out of print - surely the success of Batman And Robin should encourage DC to reprint it? I think it's great. The story's a bit silly but it's great fun and Quitely's art - especially on the Scottish landmarks - is excellent. You should be able to get it on ebay fairly cheap but it deserves an HC!

He's still writing the odd American indie, but he's mainly working on material for Rebellion, the odd European album & a load of self-published material with Simon Bisley, as well as some Scottish underground comics.

He started out working for DC Thompson inthe early 70's before he joined John Wagner at Fleetway working on girls comics, before starting to help out Wagner & Pat Mills with scripts for the rest of Fleetway's line.

Wow. This isn't the first article I've read on the subject, but in this one he has some very harsh words for the assistant Bat editors that I haven't seen him use before.

Thirded, but I don't exactly like saying it. I miss Dixon the most.

It's interesting how most of his characters have been killed off or are stuck in limbo.

Whatever happened to that recurring bum without any legs?

I really love Alan Grant from his 2000ad work, but haven't read much of his Bat work - Is much of it collected?

Of the top of my head:

Knightfall and Knightsend (co-written by him)
The Last Arkham.
Anarky
I might also have co-written Pridigal, Contagion, Legacy and Cataclysm - I'm not sure. They're not very good anyway.

He's still bitter about how DC treated him, but he doesn't especially want to return to writing for DC, he just wishes he'd not been crapped on by a company that he helped make lots of money for.

You talking about these??

Well if you are then I don't know how any Batman fan could like them. The guy in those comics sure has hell wasn't Batman. He talked waaaay too much, cracked too many jokes. And the stories were all extremely juvenile. I thought Grant must have mistakened him for Superman or Spider-Man. It's ridiculous how terrible it was.

Those early stories were co-written by John Wagner and they brought a much needed breath of fresh air into Batman at a time when Batman was being oh so terribly serious. The 2000AD approach to Batman worked perfectly at the time, though I do think had they been allowed complete free range we'd have seen some truely remarakable comics.

I couldn't answer for those particular issues, but apparantly a lot of the stories credited to Wagner and Grant were actually just written by Alan Grant.

I'm a Batman fan. I liked them.

I am actually a little shocked that there are Batman fans that don't like those comics. Weird.

I agree, it's strange not to like that run of Batman.
