I was going to make a thread about how Beast and Iceman aren't really all that funny anymore, but i did a quick search and found out that one already exists..

But it got me thinking: It's not just Beast and Iceman. Kitty, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Gambit, and even Bishop in an intetionally-not-funny-dry-humor kinda of way, all used to be quite the cut ups back in the day. Somewhere along the way, all of the humor seems to have dropped from the X-books. Is this a bad thing? Does anyone miss the occasional irreverent, goofy moment?

Besides me? :o

Ive noticed it, too. The most logical answer is that they arent written that way anymore.

Fabian Nicieza wrote a great Beast in Cable and Deadpool 9.

Nicieza seems to hit alot of characters dead on.

I miss when Nightcrawler, Kitty, and Beast were really funny. The others, not so much.

It seems as though every comic book now days is all gloom and doom. This is why I enjoyed the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire JLA minis, and am looking real forward to their Defenders mini shipping next week. I'm growing very tired of every title at Marvel being Watchmenized :evilangry . Marvel has very few fun titles out now. The New Warriors mini is about the only thing I can think of at the moment thats fun, along with Slott's Spider-Man/Human Torch :( .

But the X-Men used to have fun without being a "fun" title. The lighthearted character moments made the X-Men seem a little more like a family, which they still are to degree. The only difference is, I feel like the current teams are constructed with the express purpose of causing friction among the teammates, with the exception of Uncanny. But even uncanny gets too wrapped up in preaching morals than having fun. (A noteable exception being those ADORABLE x-babies).

Those joking, lighthearted moments were important to me, as they showed that this ragtag group of misfits was able to find comfort and community with each other- a comfort they couldn't get outside of Xavier's. And while it's nice to see them spreading that sort of comfortability with the students, and giving them a chance to have a similar experience, I get the feeling that the X-Men themselves are more like co-workers than family. And a little bit of humor would go a long way to making it seem less obvious.

PAD did a good job balancing seriousness with humor in his 1st X-Factor run. This is why I am looking very forward to his new X-Factor book.

I think that's why I enjoy Astonishing so much. especially the first few issues. Whedon is nothing if he isn't funny. and i'm not a buffy fan. I think the best thing he did was realize the key things which many old-school x-fans love:

softball. kitty. and funny.

I completely agree. I miss the fun moments, the little recurring jousts. Everyone is too tense and the conflict is too pervasive.

Remember that great basketball game between Wolvie/Rogue vs Jubilee/Gambit.

We need more light-hearted, good-humored moments!

All the funniness of the Marvel Universe has been absorbed by Cable and Deadpool, Marvel Team-Up, She-Hulk, and GLA, respectively.

The rest of the funny is sparing, at best. :D

Which is why I advocate writing a fun X-book with my very own TEAM PANTY RAID!

Beast, Iceman, Gambit and Nightcrawler as fun guys who play pranks and tell jokes and make quips and play sports and stuff... and sometimes lead a daring commando-style raid into the women's dorms to swipe the unmentionables of the female members of the team.

Special guest star Cyclops as the stuff-shirt who lectures them afterwards in front of the women... and then winks and says, "don't forget to bring me along next time," after the women have left the room.

MORE FUN!!!

You're totally right- come to think of it, much of the funniness i remember from X-Men came from Mr. Nicieza his first time around. Perhaps he should have another whack.

See this Is why Wade Wilson should be allowed to join the X-Men. Imagine that nut living In the X-Mansion. Teaching GYM even ! I'd love to see him teaching the kids and not carryin what he says.

" Look kids there goes Rogue and Gambit. Ones sexually repressed and the others sexually depressed. "

the most recent gambit title was about fun. it wasnt as joke-driven as say cable and deadpool, but it had a sense of humor about it. few bought the title, and it was canned. i dont think most x-fans are looking for humor in the x-men anymore. i know personally i would rather read an interesting story than read about beast and his latest bumbling exploit.

Most X-Fans certainly aren't looking for humor in the sense that they aren't hoping to see X-Men become a joke book like C&D or She-Hulk. But any story- especially interesting ones- are better for having a human element, something that makes the characters easier to relate to. And personally, I find humor to be a character trait that i can relate to. Certainly more than being cranky because i'm permanently stuck as a snowman, and my girlfriend is batshit crazy.

What I mean is, the humor doesn't have to drive the storyline. We need not see any bumbling exploits. But a dash of it here or there might do wonders for a totally too-serious, angst-driven set of books.

Well, Psylocke last made a funny remark in the hot white room that everything revolves around that “bloody bird'' (Phoenix Force).

That was a good funny and sarcastic moment...!

or..."you know who will come back from the white hot you know where"

i laughed :)

but i absolutely agree with you, the best part of the books for me is the team dynamic, and i don't mean the bitchiness or the romance. I mean the "team-ness". It's what i envy the characters of the most, personally. Not their skills or their bodies. (though those would be nice)

not a bad idea for a poll, actually.

I think Psylocke has brought so much humor back into the book with her quick wit and sarcastic and satirical comments. Exiles and Cable/Deadpool are what I find to be hilarious because of Morph and Deadpool (althought Cable sets up some of Wade's good jokes...)
