Were you drinking anything with fruit in it?Other than the lime in my Captain and Diet, no.

Unless you count the Jameson whiskey in my Car Bombs as fruit. ;)

If so, I hadn't heard. Other than making fun of him for not being able to hold his liquor I think he was extremely nice, funny, and generally cool. Definitely somebody I'd hang out with again given the chance.I forgot to mention this, but he was quite impressed with your ability to drink.

Things seem to be going well for them. I think Fabian might've gotten a bad rap for some reason. He's a good kid and I had a great time with him. Hope he enjoys the rest of his vacation.

Seconded. Fabian is a prince, and he was on my short list of people I'd been looking forward to meeting.

Royal was, of course, on a similarly distinguished list of short people I'd been looking forward to meeting. Next on the list: Danny Devito!

Y'know, I was about to mention that Rin helped too, but she beat me to it. C'mon, you couldn't have picked a better time to get hit by a car with that many people who have some sort of medical training./QUOTE]

I would have said Rin helped, but I didn't know. I had been shuttered in with the other drunks by then. But thanks, DB!

I think Fabes is one awesome dude. I probably spent more of my trip chatting with he and Alex (attached at the hip, those two) than anyone else. I won't pick favorites, but I will acknowledge where a lot of my attention went (especially when it came to the boozing). They're boys after my own delightfully black little heart.

Honestly, I was glad to have met everyone.

It was nice just sitting and talking in the hot tub that one night with Justin, Ron and Andrea....we all sort of needed a break away from the collective group madness.

And bonding with the late night Ritas crew....late night in Koop's room. Nice to finally get retarded in person. Next year, I hope I too can join the bar crawl and compete openly with you boys.

And my roommates......well, Rags, Chance and QW are branded as saints at the least because they tolerated my creeping in at all hours of the night as they tried to sleep.

God, there were so many of you....I can't relate all of my fond memories at once. We'll get to it....

But I want to be sure well all thank Rally for pulling this crazy adventure off.

Is anyone else still in San Diego?

Yeah. . . :)

I just got back (late) last night.

Smoog, Rally, Cosmic, and myself went to the Zoo (all day) on Monday while Guapo/Rags/Royal went shopping, and Bouncing Boy did laundry (he don't like zoos),

and then that night , BB/Rally/Smoog/Cos/Guapo/me went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (since Smoog/Cos had a flight leaving at 4:45am, they decided to stay up all night . . . . . but Cos fell asleep during the movie :p)

BB/Rally took off around 11:30 on Tues, and I left for the airport about an hour later.

Guapo stayed yesterday to do a bit more shopping, but he should be on the way to the airport right now, as he was leaving (I think) 7 am San Diego Time.

one of the best compliments I got all weekend (and I got some WEIRD crap all weekend, and luckily, usually there were witnesses), was from Justin D. .

Did I just further ruin my rep here?

Is Bert gay? I'm not sure. He sends such mixed signals.

Talking to Stars was a mixed bag. It was great to see a guy so receptive when someone (me) goes on about how great "Acts of Vengence" was and about Romita Jrs work on "Daredevil". Then it hits me...were those things THAT long ago? Then I start to feel really old.

Marvel's presence at SDCC was so pisspoor it was embarrassing. Joe Q's presence even more so. I wonder if he has "Just wait and see" tattooed on his penis. (Or is that "Dead is dead"?)

Bryan Singer hates being in public.

Doctor Doom? Ultron? I gotta start reading Runaways.

Anyway, I hope to see you all again. Talk to everyone later.

ChanceI'm inclined to think Bert might be. Maybe. ;)

Haha I enjoyed talking with you about JRJR and Cap. Sorry I made you feel old though.

Joey Q makes me sad. I was hoping he'd be more responsive in person, but apparently he's as much of an ass in real life as he reads on net.

Hehe Singer made me smile because he seemed so shy. That's probably how I'd look if I was a director like him talking to raging fanboys.

Go buy Runaways! Now!

I hope to see you too Chance!

Ummm. . .

I guess maybe I should have said something to Pho too????

You too? I was telling people at work that I was all sad (and a little jetlaged) by the fact everyone lives so far away. I have to say this about CBR people though. I am the type who can be in a group of people whom I know are my friends and know like me yet feel totally alone. I have yet to have that happen with anyone from CBR. Everyone here is so awesome that I am now setting goals for next year so that I can be there again.

So thanks for helping me remember that there are people who like me for me and that I can relate to. You all rock!!

Well my SD Adventure is officially over.

howy left today. On a big plane back to Vancouver he is. He was a really good sport, he stayed with me for a few days before and after the Con and on every one of those days I either had a gig or a class to teach or both. But it was cool. I've had such a hectic week I'm feeling pretty tired and to top it all off I have to fly back to Indiana this weekend for a wedding.

So how do I describe this year's SD experience? I don't know. It definately was a lot of fun. I haven't had much time to reflect so I'll just take it day by day:

Tues--howy arrives at LAX. We immediately have to drive to downtown LA so I can teach an improv class to middle school kids. how sits and reads quietly while I tell the kids about the blues. Later that night I have a gig playing with a mediocre singer at a club in Santa Monica. Brett once again makes the trip. Even though he slams back a few Jack and Cokes he's still not too impressed with the singer. Neither am I but I'm getting paid to play with her. After that we swing by my friend's place where some folks are hanging out so howy can "stock up" for the trip.

Wed--I take howy to my comic shop and we catch up on new books. My shop guy is such a huckster he tries to talk Brett into subscribing with him even though he lives in another friggin' country. After that we drive to a Denny's in Commerce to meet up with Fabe who is going to drive Brett down to SD with him. That night I drive way the hell down to Mission Viejo for a gig playing at a jam session.

Thurs--I teach the kiddies about Miles Davis and head down to the Con. The Class ends around 3:30 which puts me on the highways in the beginning of rush hour. It takes forever to get down there as the traffic is awful. But I stopped a few times to keep my sanity. What should've taken 2.5 hours takes well over 3 hours. When I'm about ready to pull into the Weenie Roast I get a call from Rin saying that my vehicle is needed to get people from the hotel to the beach. I'm a bit perturbed at first because the last thing I wanted to do was drive more, but the hotel wasn't as far from the Roast as I thought it would be. I'm greeted at the hotel by new and old CBR friends en masse. It's always fun seeing people for the first time.

The Weenie Roast was epic. I had a good time. I got really drunk and really messed up. I don't even remember going to bed that night. Sure sign of a good party.

Fri--I wake up with a huge hangover but that doesn't stop me. There were comics to look at damnit. I eat a little, shower, and its off to the Con. I head down with my roomies elheffe and CO (howy was in no shape to head down with us). We saw a panel by Stan Lee and looked at many comics. Bought many comics as well. After the Con we hang with koop and his crew. We ordered this INSANE family combo from a pizza place that came with all kinds of stuff. I hopped in the hot tub for a few and headed to bed early.

Sat--back at the Con. CO, elheffe and I went to the Quick Draw! panel (always a good time) and looked at even more comics. We met up for a couple of drinks with those on the pub crawl after that. Then we went to the hotel, got ready, and caught up with the rest of the clan again. Then came the highlight of the Con; Roy, CO, elheffe, howy and I hit the ComiCon Funk Jam. It was a friggin' blast. Jim Mahfood, Scott Morse and others doing live art to DJs and musicians. Just a great time. howy bought a sweet skateboard deck they were painting on.

I was nice and loaded by the time we made it back.

Sun--More Con. We actually got most of the exhibit floor covered (all .5 miles of it). We made our last minute purchases and it was time to say farewell. That night howy and I left for home. Once again we hit traffic. But such is life in SoCal.

Mon--I had a class to teach during the day. That night howy and I met up with another friend of mine who was in town and hit some more bars.

Tues--Another class that Brett went to. That night he and the wifey see a movie while I'm at my gig. I'm hoping no funny stuff happened!

And here we are.

All the CBR types are great. Big shout out to elheffe, CO Jones, and howy ... my roomies.

Thanks for a good time everyone.

From what I can tell from the garbled voicemail, it's a headshot of Jewel and Some people can say they met Jewel Staite at a convention, and got her autograph. Some even have photos of her standing next to them. But how many people can say that Jewel Staite's voice is on their voicemail or answering machine message? Ok, I mean besides Matty.

Well, here's your chance! With a nod to Carl Kasell (http://www.npr.org/programs/waitwait/features/2003/messages.html), the lovely and talented Jewel Staite has agreed to compose the outgoing message for the winner's voicemail or answering machine. You think your friends were jealous over you meeting her at a con, just wait until they call you and hear her voice telling them to leave a message at the tone. :-)

How wierd is it that I win stuff from howya's friend?

Just want to set the record straight to everybody. Thanks to everyone who helped me out during my accident. Again, the only reason Smoogs and Pheonix are front and center in my mind was because they were checking me out and wiping the blood off me. Again, my memory of the whole event isn't exactly crystal clear.

Who was the one who asked me if I knew who the President was? I almost threw up there. Not because of the accident, but because I knew the answer.

We actually said it's a shame you didn't go. We loved our free drinks and whores.

Next year we're planning on staying there longer. Heck I might go back since I have 4 more days off.

Although we caught the gambling bug. Alex and I decided to put $20 each on black for Hawk cause he ran out of money and so he can hang out with us at Medieval Times and we won. That was our first bet and then we just got greedy and kept betting on black. Like 8 more black bets and all of them red

They dont give you free booze for watching. You can however fake them out. Alex discovered that if you put $20 in the machine at the bar, the bartender makes you a free drink. Just dont play the hand and cash out when you get your drink

When I played blackjack however, I got offered a lot of drinks. I loved winning

Chance, I'm really sorry to hear about your accident, and glad that you only got relatively minor injuries... that driver's got some nasty karma to deal with now.

I saw the following, and just couldn't leave it alone:

Is Bert gay? I'm not sure. He sends such mixed signals.

To which the inevitable response is, Is the Pope Catholic?!!! Hee. Yes dear, bert's gay. Of course, he's my closet sweetie (;)) but the reality is that he's gay. However, being gay doesn't mean you can't say appreciative things about the opposite sex, heh. Bert tends to do that, which might account for the "mixed signals".

And this quote, too, should be enshrined on a wall somewhere (along with Justin's comment about Alex):

Marvel's presence at SDCC was so pisspoor it was embarrassing. Joe Q's presence even more so. I wonder if he has "Just wait and see" tattooed on his penis....

I got rid of the ball and chain over ten years ago! Traded him in for a pair of wings, y'know---one that'll even hold the camera! ;) :D

And thankee! Once we finally get it worked out to go (it's hard, with it so close to Dragoncon, money-wise), we've still gotta figure out whether to bring the munchkin or leave him w/the grands. Plus is that he's adorable and cute and everyone could meet him; minus is that if we wanna go bar-hopping, can't with him along. I guess I could look at it as a win/win situation either way, then. :)

Dang it, I was gonna ask something in this thread, and I've clean forgotten what it was. Senility is so embarassing. Guess I'll head to bed, since I read my way through till now. I'm sure there'll be 10 more pages by morning, heh!

That's not as bad as me getting in a fight with some lady who insulted you guys in Spanish at Vegas. We went all out, clique geek pride. She can't insult my boys

I have to know. What did she say?

I really wish I could've gone to Six Flags and Vegas. Turns out I missed my doctor's appointment on Tuesday morning anyway and went to the make-up appointment today for the MRA (it's like a MRI). Thirty or more minutes in a loud, lit up coffin and the guy doesn't even think he has a clear picture of my kidneys so I may have to do it again. Whatever.

Even if I did go to Vegas, I doubt I would've gambled much. We have casinos down here so I know all the tricks to getting free drinks without spending much money.

I do remember raising our glasses to Fabian's dead great aunt at one time and much hilarity at Horton's Plaza about the situataion when most of us guaranteed our spots in Hell.

So, ... did Alex do blow off of a hooker's ass?

Finally back home.

The trip to San Diego was hella long and it had 3 stops. It's not easy to navigate across the entire Mexican Republic but after 12 hours I was deposited in the San Diego airport.

As I went past customs with my passport and visa the customs guy starts the "let's weed out the terrorist/future illegal alien" questionaire.

"Where do you come from? (Mexico!) How long are you staying? (seven days!) Where are you staying (here)...
...where are you staying?...
-San Diego.
...where are you staying?
-The Comfort Inn.
...where are you staying?
-San Diego!
..when I ask "where are you staying, I mean a city like Los Angeles or San Francisco".
-I am staying here in San Diego! (tuna head!)

And then he goes "sir..you do not exist."

Being the Mexican James Bond sometimes has its drawbacks.

"I don't?"

He passed my passport and visa again and again. "Sir, do you go by other names?" I was tempted to say Guapo Mendez, but I figured custom agents have a very narrow sense of humor.

"No..." and I tried to read the computer display to help him out. You won't believe the times my so-easy-to-remember-and-write name has been misspelled and missfiled.

"STEP AWAY FROM THE DISPLAY!" he went. I complied. He fumbled with the computer a bit more "I'm sorry sir, you do not show up in our database. I'm gonna have to ask you to wait there by the documents while I process the whole plane. I'll keep your papers here and we'll get back to you."

I was very worried becasue the fine gentleman who is Jim MacQuarrie was giving me a ride and I had no way to tell him I was maybe a few minutes of being deported or sent to Guantanamo.

About 40 minutes later, the whole plane had been processed and the customs agent started to deal with my stuff again. He couldn't make heads or tails about it. He finally gave my documents to a senior agent and he sorted it out in 2 clicks. He even asked me "were you worried?"
I told him " A friend of mine got confused for a drug dealer in a US airport. You bet I was worried."

So, after almost an hour of deplaning, I was clear of customs and free to go.
I scanned the airport looking for Jim and I recognized him by his comics-paneled shirt. Him and the Hatchers are way cool. We chatted for a while en route to the hotel and they hung out with me until the Horton Plaza contingent returned. Big thank you guys!

First night was fun and my first CBR meet. My face/name memory is bad -to say the least- and the first night I had no idea who the girl in the WW shirt was. Gave Fabian the bubulubus and the two bottles of booze I smuggled thru customs. I hung in the Party room as much as I could but I was beat from the trip, so I returned to our room and -literally- crashed.

I had a rocking good time with my roomates Bert, BB and Rally. Big kudos and well dones and attagirls to Rally, who poured her heart and soul into everything, making sure things went right.

Thursday was great. The stuff at the con was fabulous. Excellent displays, nice freebies, tons o'comics to see and buy -except my comics brain seemed to shut down every time I was near them. I could not remember what I collected and what I did not. I went for the safe route and bought trades at half price.

We had thai for lunch on thursday? Food was great but they overcharged gratuity. Pikers.

Lost count on Starbucks No. 29. Damn, there's a lot of them.
I miss the white moka frapuccinos.

Bert got called Fabulous. And got stopped by a cute girl to have his picture taken with.

I came *this*close to getting an autograph of Lost's Sawyer for my wife, but they ran out of tickets about 1 hour before I showed up. Missed the Superman trailers for it but my wife is worth it.

The Weenie Roast rocked.
So did the CBR patches.
Quarterwolf went above and beyond with that lunch. Muchas gracias, Quarter!
DB is one helluva lady.
Smoog and Cos are fun to be with.
Thanks to Royal and Rags. They went shopping with me. Fortunately, as a guy, I was able to look at the list, buy half of the stuff and call it a day.

All in all, it was an excellent vacation and I had fun every-single-moment. I hope I can make it next year -and if I can, you'll meet my wife and kids-.

The return trip was another 12 hour extravaganza, with an extra 50 minutes tacked in because the plane was delayed for bad weather.
I breezed through mexican customs (I do exist here) with my suitcase and backpack full of swag and saw my wife and kids and all was right in the world.
Marco -my 4 year old- first words when he saw me?

I got him a jedi starter kit (lightsaber, cloak, belt and braid), some regular SD themed clothes and shoes -Royal was with me when I picked them up-. I got Barbie (my almost 2 year old) some nice pink girly clothes and a cute hat with fake pigtails.

Today I was woken up by them jumping all over the room in mock lighstaber battle and I swear I thought I was still in San Diego. ;)

Thinks I just rememberd happened:

I had a big fight with Justin, Smoogis and Cosmic_Cat which I think Quarterwolf captured on video. Anyway, Justin started the whole thing against Smoogis -I think-. Then he went after Cosmic. I got dragged into it, tried to hold my own but lost every fight to two take-no-prisoners women.

(I'm talking about the thumb war, folks. ;) No drama here)

Justin was surprised when Cos added a little "hello, bow, kiss" ritual to the "I declare a thumb war" litany.

That's hilarious. Mean as shit, but hilarious. I don't about that waitress, but the concensus seemed to be that even though the food was consistently good, the service was generally crappy. Kristina thinks that it's just a case of restaurants outside of the South, but I told her that a lot of people not from the South felt the same way. You'd think the waitstaff would be nice to people during the Con to encourage others to come back next time.

One of my favorite quotes from the Con comes from Mandy.

We were at the Baja Lobster and I just ordered a couple pitchers of margaritas when the waitress asked if I wanted to use the house tequlia or the top shelf stuff. I looked around at our group, laughed, and said, "House. Definitely house."

The waitress walked away and Mandy turned around to the group and said, "There's nothing top shelf about me." Funny on different levels.

and one of the cops that showed up was cute as hell too. . .

and then, less than 3 hours later, Chance challenges a car, and we have MORE hottie Firemen -- this time in OUR ROOM !!!! (the cops this time weren't cute tho).

yeah. . I was missing Nick, but the Fireman asses made it less painful

:p

I dunno, the Swedish porn-looking cop that decided to plant his ass in Andrea and I's faces was rather fun to watch.

Can someone please invent a working time Machine so I can go back and relive what was one of the greatest weeks of my life?

Seriously. I had what could be the best time of my life. At least until next year. :D How did it turn out Jim? Get anything interesting?

I am home. and I had the most AWFUL trip back.

it sucked in the first place that the trip had to be cut short, but the fact that things quickly, and steadily went downhill after was a huge source of frustration.

Smoogis and I were due to fly out at 6:30. The day before I had developped a strange and itchy rash on my face ( i assume from sleeping on the floor....but it's almost gone now, thank god.) So we got up at 4 am, and Rally drove us to the airport, where the line for tickers took FOREVER!!. The lady couldn't find our new reservation, so amy phoned her dad, momentary panic, amys brother was a dick, worker person finally finds our ticket, we check our bags, everything seems okay.

Rally sees us off and we board our plane to washington jussst fine. However, when we get to washington at 2:30 in the afternoon, Amy and I are forced to wait (we think) untilo 5:30 for our flight.

at about four, we are told it's going to be delayed until 7:30. from this point, it keeps change, 7:30, to 8, back to 5:30 then to 9:00 then told for sure 7:30, then to 9:41 and finally....THEY CANCEL IT.

so we go and wait in the customer service line. which is long, slow, and stupid. We;re both freaking, and told there isn't another flight until 8:30 the NEXT MORNING, no hotel rooms, and nothing they can do. basically, "go to section C, find a pillow and a blanket, and go away"..

uhh...okay then. Another minor freak out, but it's okay, we'll make do. I manage to re-route my flight yet again, and so I go to Syracuse now instead of Portland (because otherwise I've have to take a ten hour bus ride to syracuse after landing in portland so this was just easier).

Amy and I endured a long mostly sleepless (on Amy's side) night, and I saw amy off at around 8:30, then I had to wait until 12:30 for my flight to take off. The stupid air port staff also told me the wrong gate number, so I nearly missed THAT flight too.

boarded the smallest plane I have ever been on...and I got off in syracuse thinking the adventure was FINALLY over. But nope. My bag is not in syracuse, IT'S IN GODDAMN MAINE! at this point, I started to bawl my eyes out.

I dont think the guy behind the counter knew what to do. But the whole trip home had been UNBELIEVABLY stressful, and now half my wardrobe is somewhere else. It was doubly frustrating because I made a point to try and go get, and re-check my luggage and the idiot behind the counter in washington basically wouldn't let me, and didn't take my seriously because I was a stupid kid.

so they're sending my luggage back to me, and I guess, in the end it sort of worked out. and I guess I'll have to think of all the good things instead :P

I dont know how amy's trip back was after I left her. Hopefully better than minethough.

God, Andrea, that sucks! I mean, it's great you eventually got home all right, but horrible that Amy and you had to go through all that. Then, to go through more after she left? Damn. Glad to hear the mysterious rash has gone or is going away too. I just thought you were allergic to geeks. Then, I saw that it was almost impossible to tear you away from Fables at times so I forgot that theory.

I think that might've been me. I was telling about Jackal, who hasn't really posted much here since, got arrested back in 2000. Well, really, he got put in the drunk tank for the night, but most of us didn't know that until he showed up after the Eisners. Kind of wish I would've gone this year too. oh yeah. . I did forget about her. . she was in the bathroom about 10 minutes, and then sat in the back booth counting money. .

and speaking of Hookers. . . another great line from the weekend was as Rally/Smoog/Cos and myself left the Breakfast to catch a cab so we could get set for the zoo. . .

this SKANK and a half street walker (bare belly and LOW-riding jeans) complimented Cos on her Lime Green top. . . LOL .

I dunno if that had anything to do w/ it :p, but Cos changed before we went to the zoo. . .

so sorry to hear about that crappy trip back!

We knew about the Airport and Amy's dick of a brother, cause Rally told us when she got back (I thought she was getting up to take you, and she was all "no, I'm just getting back -- go back to sleep).

That really sucks -- worst thing happened to me was that we sat on the runway for about 40 minutes in Dallas in a hot plane. . . other than that. . . .

Gad yer back tho. . (I really enjoyed our talk (s) while walking to and from the movies, and at the zoo).

GAH! I'm so sorry it kept getting worse!

After I left Dulles it went pretty smoothly...my gate changed about 3 times over at new york, and I had to try to figure out what that mainer lady was saying (I swear, it made me so happy to hear such a strong, hicky mainer voice.)

At one time, she was pointing out someone's neck pillow, and I had no idea what she was saying. "Ooo, Next time, I should get a pillar like that'n!" "...Pillar?" "Yes, that pillar over there." "I don't see..." "Right there! Around'r neck!" "Oh! The pillow! Yeah, um, I'm sure that's helpful."

And, I'm sorry to say...*hides behind a wall* When I got to Maine and was dancing around the airport, I got my luggage fairly quickly.

That sucks, Andrea. I hope you never have to fly on that airline again.

And Justin, I was at the Eisners last year and thought it was enjoyable as always. The show was shorter than last year's edition although the oratory wasn't quite as good. Denis Kitchen's acceptance speech for the Defender of Freedom/Liberty award was very moving. Jerry Robinson's presentation of the Bill Finger Award was another highlight even though it took a long time.

Oh, and the magazine I work for won an Eisner, so that was pretty cool too. :)

Not the right video, but I did figure out yousendit.com.

The following folks appear prominently in the background of BB's bluebird performance:
Trix
Cos
Fabian
Howy
Pho
Sir Tim
El Heffe
Justin
Hawk

There's a lot of DB and a bit of Julie Hatcher in the video of Alex playing the guitar. Way too much chatter to really hear him though.

Fabian doing karaoke is just him, of course. Although you can probably hear Matt cackling in the background.

Unfortunately, the video camera portion of my digital camera doesn't make use of the flash so the one with everyone at the table (Alex, Bib, Trix, Fabian) singing along to 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' is impossible to make out.

Send me a PM with any requests and the email address to use.
