Does anyone else think that Willy Wonka in the new "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" looks like a ghost. Whenever I see the trailer I think what happened to Wonka he die and come back to life a few times.Anyone know why they made Depp so pale?

It's very clear when you watch the movie: Willy Wonka is a recluse, he hasn't seen the light of day for years. As for his voice, I guess it's just Johnny Depp channeling the spirit of Michael Jackson.

Better question. Is he trying to mimic Jacko?

Just saw the VH1 special on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Depp says he was actually channeling the old time kiddie tv show hosts of his childhood.

Movie looks nice, and I have to say, the actress who plays Mrs. Bouergard (?) is, woah, pretty hot.

I think you actually need sunlight to survive but I could be wrong. But I do know it's a good source of Vitamin D. I just think that him being pale cuz he's a recluse is stupid. He could still purchase a tanning bed or have his own private backyard or indoor atrium in order to get some sunlight and fresh air. But I'm a bit biased. I truly truly hate this movie and I havent even seen it yet. I know I cant prejudge it until I see it. But it just seems from the commericals to be a pale imitation. Pun intended. Also I keep hearing that this movie will be darker and creepy than the first. The first one wasnt creepy? I remember a few parts that were very creepy, even creepier when under the influence. But these are just my opinions.

Trust me, if your first thought is "he needs some Vitamin D" when you see the pale face of Willy Wonka, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is not for you. You won't like it at all.

Seriously, when I first saw the trailers I thought Depp and Burton were doing some type of commentary on Jacko and the Neverland ranch.

My first thought at the trailers was "Cool, they put the Oompa Loompa backstory in!" :D

Oh, yeah. Hell Yeah..

The new Chocolate Factory is awesome. I already started a thread for it (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=69158), in fact.

I liked the movie, but there was 1 HUGE missed opportunity. All we needed was to see Willy Wonka looking serious/introspective for a few moments, to show that his bizarre personality was mostly an act that he showed the world.

Instead, he comes off as borderline insane, which is interesting but shallow. Maybe that's the intention, in which case I'm disappointed.

Overall, pretty funny flick for those that know the book; the Oompa Loompa numbers are solid gold! :D

Heh, ain't that the truth.

It's strange that you would mention the lack of moments of introspection as there are a few of them in the film (one of the many things I dig about it). As far as Depp's paleness goes - it just makes sense. I like both takes on the Chocolate Factory story for entirely different reasons. That's all I say for now as I don't wanna spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet.
