We finally get pulled from the xerox wasteland that is Wolverine origin stories. There's some drama between the Bobby/Rogue/Kitty triangle that interrupts a Danger Room fight against a holographic Magneto (foreshadowing?) and Scott brings up that he's only dated one other girl.
We get a cut scene to Polaris, which I suppose means that she and Scott dated. Nothing is said directly, though. The focus is now on Emma's "New Mutants." Northstar, Polaris, and Havok are all there, as is the cool inclusion of Sunspot. No more "Madre de dios" for this hip kid. He's from Harlem, and he's offered a spot in Emma's school partly due to his organization of a neighborhood watch. Emma's school seems genuinely cooler and more worldly/proactive than Xavier's.
So, Havok, Northstar, and Polaris are trying to help firefighters when Polaris's powers go crazy and she kills firefighters and bystanders. Havok mercy-blasts her and she's taken into custody by SHIELD/the Ultimates. The problem is, there's only one cell that can contain someone with her powers... and it's occupied... dun dun DUN!
The art is still awesome. The cover's really nice. It's a refreshing surprise to see that Lorna's wearing a bra under her shirt when most heroines go out in nipple-hardening spandex. The interior art doesn't let down either.
I worry a little that there's going to be a very generic crazy-Polaris, relation-to-Magneto thing, but I'm willing to trust Vaughan for another issue at least (even though he DID let me down with the Wolverine origin by trying to hide it in a bit of a Storm story).
