View Full Version : Kill Banshee!

Just putting it out there.
I get that there is a great deal of accumulated fondness for Sean and deservedly so, because he has been written well in the past.
But then we have....'bleatin'
I will never until my dying nerd day, forget how pissed my 14/15 year old self got at that Lobdellism. It's 'bleedin'....but at that age it became even clearer just how embarassing Banshee as a character was to an Irish reader.
Here me out. For starters his name. HIS name. Banshee, or bean sidhe literally means "female fairy". I know it was the sixties and Stan can't be expected to research everything, but.....oh it sticks in the craw.
The worst part is though when Theresa was introduced (in Spider-Woman I believe) Banshee was in character limbo...she wore the same costume as him, had the same powers, surely she should have inherited his name. It was a perfect fit. However, instead she was given the handle of 'Siryn'. And then in AoA she became 'Sonique', which is even worse.
If any of you read Top Ten by Alan Moore one of the principle pleasures of that comic is spotting all the background cameos and jokes. One issue, offhand I can't recall which one, had a Leprechaun type character with a big green hat flying along dressed in Sean's costume. I've always thought that is the best illustration of how an Irish reader would see Banshee. As a piece of paddywhackery.
Kill Sean. Have Theresa inherit the name.

Ya know...you're right...it's madness. Hell, if I were Irish, I'd be mildly insulted. I second your motion to kill the man.

I have to agree about his name. I always thought Banshee was a rather unmanly name for a hero. It would have been more fitting if Theresa adopted it. Still I think he's too cool a character to kill. He just needs a name change and a writer with a clue.

I like Banshee, I'd prefer him not to die. I like the idea of him joining Madrox in X-Factor.

I rather like Banshee so I wouldn't want him to die.
As far as his name goes, while it's origin doesn't quite gell with sean cassidy, i couldn't see him with another name. And i couldn't see theresa using the name either. I love her Siryn codename.

In the Masterwork Edition of X-Men it says Banshee was meant to be a woman but it was either the artist or editoral (I forget) said change it to a man.
I like Banshee. You have to put up with him and we have to put up with every English character saying "Bloody" every other word.

i think banshee could work well in astonishing x-men. he's been in the teacher role before. he's got clear ties with wolverine and colossus. plus his past relations with emma could be interesting given her relationship with scott.

i really don't see the problem with the name. I think 'Banshee' suits Sean's powers fine, and his original firey personality
i can't imagine him with any other name now

Maybe they should change his name to 'Screaming Ninny'.....Hurm.
I get how British characters saying 'bloody', may be irritating, but then Chamber or Pete Wisdom are nowhere near as insulting as the Oirish Sean, for most of his run.
Fabes did a good run with Theresa though, so I don't find her entirely besmirched  Plus she is an interesting character in her own right. As someone else mentioned above, what with the serial throat cutting and such, Banshee/Sean is a character who has been resurrected and rehabilitated so many times over the past thirty years..... In fact, with the persistent suggestions of introducing Banshee to Madrox, Theresa would probably be a better fit, given her complicated history with him and the Fallen Angels.
And that recurring story idea that Cassidy Castle is inhabited by fairies and trolls - what is that!

Y'know, in all likelihood, that was the editors censoring the profanity.

I sincerely doubt it. I heard stories that when The Commitments was released in the States it had subtitles. Lobdell just can't understand our accent.

it's hard to imagine editors would be fine with bloody but not bleadin', given they share the same etymology.

LOL. That is freaking hilarious. Thats going to be in my head everytime I read about Sean now. :D
Fishtaco, I might be wrong but Siryn and MM only had a brief fling in which it turned out that it was one of his dupes and he didn't feel it. It was done and over with. Other than that, has there been any other historical significance between them?
Anyways, I like Banshee better...originals are always better than copies.

There's no reason to kill a character that's been in limbo for ages.. If they were to bring him back just to kill him it'd be a waste.
Now, if they brought him back to have a few good stories, some real character development, growth, and connections (with other characters) and THEN pass his legacy onto Terry..
Then if nothing else, we'd get a good story :D

Uh...I thought that they DID kill Banshee. Mystique (or a reasonable facsimile, depending on how precise we're being) rammed what looked to be a nine-inch buck knife through his throat about two years back, our-time.
Then he--in grand Marvel style--simply got better.
But in my tiny, inflexible mind he's dead. 'Cause he's not Wolverine, and having one's larynx and spinal cord severed by a huge-a** knife is normally nominally fatal to non-Wolverines.
Guess it fell under the category "Mostly Dead All Day."

I don't think there's any history beyond those Fallen Angels and X-Factor issues.
but that's quite enough to make things a little weird for both of them but especially Theresa.

The two of them did discuss it during the X-Cutioner's song, where Madrox tried to explain it to her.
Then later in New X-Men Theresa is slagging off Madrox speculating as to whether he has orgies when he is by himself. Eh, either Morrison didn't know they had a history, or he's showing she's a good Irish girl and has decided to torture the man through black humour.
I still haven't heard any great arguments why Sean is necessary. It's like his character is there because of congealed nostalgia that's built up round him over the years. Why have a character simply to have him around (poor poor Forge...) especially when some find him to be an insulting stereotype?
Ach....if they did kill him, they'd probably have him drink himself to death, right?

very very few characters are 'necessary'
and while i understand why you find his Oirishness insulting ... killing him off is the easy option (especially in 'rotating door' comics). better for a writer to figure how to do something with the character that takes him beyond the stereotype
