Okay, first we finally get s little more information on Xaviers cat, Mystique. First we learn she doesn't like Wolverine, who is talking to Xavier about what happened last issue. Wolverine asks why Xavier about the name, and Xavier says he used to date a woman by that name. The conversation is actually pretty funny. So maybe Mystique really isn't actually the cat, but at least we finally get somewhat of a cameo of Ultimate Mystique. And it looks like Wolverine will be sticking around with the X-Men once more.
Also we see that Warren and Ali are still together, which is more than we can say for Kitty and Bobby, because Kitty found out Bobby and Rogue have been E-mailing eachother, and Bobby tells Rogue he still has feelings for her. Storm is leading Peter, Bobby, and Kurt in the Danger Room against Magneto, and Kitty busts in to confront Bobby about this. Scott and Jean are observing overhead and we find out Scott only dated one girl before Jean... maybe Polaris..?
Now we get to see Frost's school in Chicago, where we have students such as, Polaris, Havok, Sunspot, Doug Ramsey, and Northstar so far. Northstar, Havok, and Polaris go in uniform to help out with a fire, and Polaris' powers go nuts where she accidentally kills some firemen. Polaris says there is something wrong with the Electromagnetic fields, hmm...
Havok stops Polaris by a nice plasma shot, and S.H.I.E.L.D. comes along to clean things up. S.H.I.E.L.D. Commander Dugan contacts Fury telling him he has Polaris in custody since ya'know she basically killed like 10 people. And that the only place they can hold her is in the cell with Magneto.
Lastly we have Mags in his cell playin chess all by his lonesome, and he says out loud, check. Hopefully he'll have someone to play with now!

Thoughts?

Very good issue. Nice to see Emma Frost, Havok, Polaris, Northstar, and Sunspot again. Love the further teases of Mystique, though it would have been nice to know where she vanished to ever since 'New Mutants'. Looking forward to next issue, and more Magneto goodness. :)

They teased even more in the letter pages when they wrote "but mystique is a cat....isn't she?" I hope this isn't a running gag and one day is focused upon in a arc.

I still like the original idea of the reveal of Mystique. Millar had this really wonky out-there idea of the cat saying something to the team and totally shocking the hell out of them. And then it gets hit and killed by a semi-truck while the team is waiting for it to talk again. :)

Lol that would be funny, but I like Mystique so I don't want her Ultimate version to die.

Was it just me, or was Stuart Immomen's art a lot worse this issue? Did he have a new inker or somthing? Things just didn't look as fluid as they have before.

Nothing else in the issue really stood out to me. But it was cool to see some more Ultimate characters, and it looks like they're setting up for one hell of a story.

I liked this art, it reminded me a lot of Sandman's Marc Hempel.

Great issue, one of the finest of Vaughan's run, in my opinion.

And Ultimate Polaris sure looked pretty. :o

I want to make out furiously with this issue.

I thought the art was awesome and ....Alex and Lorna! :D It's good to see there is one book that hasn't gone completely mad!

Alex is a total cartoon babe.

I love this book, again I'm saying it, it's the only place I can get my Scott/Jean fix.

It's also the only book with Wolverine in it. Why is'nt Wolverine in any of the other X-Books, or the Avengers or the Defenders?

So Emma's already got Cypher and Sunspot, huh? Plus that cloud trail in the background sure looked a lot like Cannonball, though it could always be Jetstream (with a different visual effect, of course). Emma looks to be building herself quite the collection of New Mutants, doesn't she?

Don't have the issue in front of me, but during the S.H.I.E.L.D. bit, wasn't there a big blue person in a chair, as though being examined or experimented on? I assumed that was Beast, not as dead as we think.

"There's no fighting in the Danger Room--!"

Now, THAT'S a quote. I'd park my pancakes under that line any day.

And I loved Kitty's smack at the most popular misspelling on X-boards anywhere: "Rogue--which you spell like 'rouge,' by the way...."

This first part of Magnetic North is awesome.

It seems like Magneto is somehow controlling Lorna's powers by "remote" which is a cool way of using her. It was cool to see Emma's new group of mutants as well, Northstar and Roberto on the same team as Alex and Lorna are a nice little mix.

The scene with the Danger Room was funny and neat at the same time. Brian injects his good grasp of teen humor into these characters and it makes them very likeable to me. I guess this is the end for the Kitty/Bobby relationship which causes Kitty to hook up with Spiderman now (an idea that I liked ever since Peter and Kitty talked over in Ultimate Spiderman).

I actually think Stuart Immonen's work here is his best yet, I guess because I like Paul Mounts softer more textured coloring. It's amazing that he can color 3 titles at once with Wolverine, Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men....he must have a ton of lead time or just works very fast.

Anyway, this is a great start for the return of Magneto and he's definitely coming back with a boom.
