X-Men #41 “Now Strikes... the Sub-Human”
February 1968
Continuing a trend of bland and boring comics, this latest instalment is part one of a storyline that will have you turning the pages quickly just to get it over with. OK they are not that bad. :p
This issue starts with a large humanoid monster man standing on the tracks of an oncoming subway train. The subway slams on its brakes but it ends up colliding with the man monster who just pushes it back to a stop. And lo and behold wouldn’t ya know it, Hank and Bobby, Beast and Iceman, are onboard with their dates. Bobby and Hank, who are best friends in these issues, have girlfriends, Zelda and Vera, that they are always going out with when they have the time. Its funny cause every single time they all go out, they have to skip out and go fight crime which pisses off their dates. The writer Roy Thomas keeps up this theme in this issue. As the lights go out they slip away and into their costumes only to be attacked immediately by the monster man. Beast calls him grotesque and the creature seems to like this and starts calling himself “Grotesk”. Maybe its cause he has albino skin, long hair growing from his shoulders and looks like a Thundaar reject.
Iceman throws an ice boomerang at Grotesk who just bats it away. Iceman says “it worked pretty well against Frankenstein`s Monster.” Please don`t bring that up again. Iceman then encases him in ice which Grotesk easily busts out of whilst calling him a “Puny human worm”. Grotesk then decides to take off and Iceman wants to ice him up again but his mutant power is too weak to work. OK. At this point in the review I would like to say the X-mens mutant powers are pretty weak compared to the way they are today. In fact in seems that Iceman can only peel off a few ice bursts before he starts becoming weak. This is lame.
Anyway, Grotesk makes his way through a hole in the subway tunnel, and blocks it behind him with a boulder. The two mutants start to go after him but the police are on their way and they need to get back to their girlfriends so that take off.
Later in Greenwich village Bobby and Hank are yet again giving lame excuses for leaving them in the dark on a crashed subway train. Zelda thinks they could be two-timing on them. At the same time, Grotesk is walking around in some deep dark tunnels wondering who he is and why he is here when he remembers. Good, cause the suspense was killing me. We are treated to a flashback of Grotesk`s life. He says he was part of a race that lived below the surface always having wars with the rest of the civilization never knowing a race of humans lived above them and vice versa. Their wars underground caused volcanoes to form on the surface (so that`s where they came from) and they decided to explore upwards. But huge explosions (nuclear testing and ensuing radiation) ended this race of subterraneans and “Prince Gor-Tok” is all that is left and he has vowed to destroy the human race.
While all of this has been going on, Professor X has been training the others in the Danger Room. Cyclops wonders why the prof. is so tense and short-tempered while he practices opening a door! Well, it’s a locked door. And he can only use his powers. The Angel trains on his maneuverability as Marvel Girl tries to keep Angel from getting sucked into a huge vacuum tube, all the while the prof is all grumpy and losing his temper. At this point in the review I am wondering how in the hell does Professor X get all the resources for such an extravagant training room? Oh well, it’s a comic book.
Xavier gets on Marvel Girl and Angel for taking to long to complete their task (eight seconds) and Cyclops says that they`ve done their best. Xavier says its not good enough. Just as Hank and Bobby come home and enter the Danger Room, old Xavier yells at them for coming into the Danger Room with civilian attire. He punishes them by not allowing them any trips to the city for a month. Screw you Prof! Wow! This guys got a hard on. He then leaves and tells Marvel Girl to come with him. He says he is sorry for acting harshly but they all need to step it up. Jean tells him that they need to tell the others that they both have been working on some sort of experiment together. He says not right now. HMMMMMmmmmmmm...
Here we step aside to a scene at a local college where some professor says he has created a nuclear oscillotron that can create earth tremors. The board of trustees asks him to prove it which he does and they all agree to move the device to a room that can be guarded. Grotesk has been shaken from these earth tremors and comes to the surface to use the machine to bring about global holocaust. At this time, Xavier tells the boys to suit up and go after Grotesk without Marvel Girl. Hank points out that they never mentioned this but Xavier reminds Hank that he can read minds. (Wow, invasion of privacy big time). Cyclops wonders why Jean has to stay behind and thinks maybe the prof is in love with her like he is. (I doubt it, besides, eehehhwwwww...).
So the boys get back to the tunnel and remove the boulder with Beasts and Cyclops power as the Angel rushes (flies) headlong into the unknown ahead of everyone like he always does while calling Beast “Twinkle-Toes”. Sigh...
They discover the ruins of the subterranean civilization and try to contract the grouchy gimp when they find out that their communicators will not work this far underground. They all start to wonder why the Prof hasn`t contacted them by telepathy yet also. So Cyclops orders Iceman and Angel back to the school to check up. When they get back they find Marvel Girl who says that the Xavier got their message and then went somewhere. Angel doesn`t believe her and asks her to come back with them to help out but she won`t. She also won`t tell them why. Suffice it to say, they are starting to be very suspicious of Marvel girl. In the meantime, Cyclops and the Beast meet up with Grotesk at the college by themselves, to deal with his wrath.
The End.
