As we know, when our favorite action movies get aired on television, they dub over profanity.

What's the funniest profanity dub ever?

The Matrix has a funny one, not EXACTLY Profanity, but when Agent Smith is interrogating Neo, Neo's supposed to say "How about I give you the finger"

but in the profanity dub, he says "How about I give you a flipper"

WTF?!?

AND in Die Hard 2.

John McClaine's famous "Yippie Kai Yay" was changed to "Yippie Kai Yay Mister Falone!"

One times I was watching Tremors on TV and I heard somebody say Mother Humper, then I watched the un-edited version and it was still Mother Humper.I know its not a dub but that was wierd to me.

I always got a kick ouot of Sean Penn's line as Spicoli in Fasttimes at Ridgemont High when it was aired on tv. "Make up your mind dude, is he gonna flip or is he gonna kill us?" The answer "First he gonna flip, then he gonna kill us".

To hear Pesci call somebody a "mother lover" or "jerk head" in a voice apparently dubbed in by Kermit the Frog is priceless.

I just shake my head everytime I try to watch the "Edited For Television" version of Smokey and the Bandit.

Hearing Fred Flintstone utter "scum bum" instead of Sheriff Justice saying "sumbitch" just kills me. Or instead of "There is no way you could have come from my loins." we have "There is no way you could have come from my genes."

LOL! Reminds me of when I watched Runaway Train w/ Jon Voight, his vocie alone was funny but when he said 'you mutha lover!', it just cracked me up.

Generally speaking, I love it when the dub comes over but the lips keep moving. Even if I have never seen tne movie, I know its been dubbed.

Yeah, I think I've caught more this way than just through what they were saying... or just the weird voice change.

Repo Man is a classic, supervised by Alex Cox himself and including lots of fake swear words like "Melon Farmer".

Mallrats is almost surreal with whole series of events taking place because of an event or line that never happened, illogical actions ("Have a chocolate covered pretzel, they're a little moldy, but damn are they exquisite."), illogical explanations ("When I'm relaxed... I get sick." Who doesn't?). Here's some of the examples: Mallrats - The ABC Cut (http://www.viewaskew.com/tv/abcrats/).

The network version of Die Hard With A Vengeance doesn't just censor the offensive racist word but censors the entire offensive concept of racism, with McClain forced to wear a sign that says "I hate everybody." So, Sam Jackson as, y'know, somebody is forced to take offense.

My personal favourite being Robocop, when he's described as "One bad mother crusher", ahh memories.

Haha! This reminds me of the TV version of The Breakfast Club. When Anthony Michael Hall's character breaks down and admits to bringing a flare gun to school he says "Well, f*ck you!" but in the TV cut he says "Well flip you!"

"Demon Knight" stands out in my mind for the repeated use of "son of a [I]beast!" IIRC, it was actually dubbed over pretty well, at first I wasn't sure that it wasn't the actual dialouge.
And this was on sci-fi channel, which left in a decent amount of the gore. They could say "son of a bitch" on the The Simpsons, but not in a horror movie on basic cable?!

And there's "you fairy-god-mother" from The Usual Suspects. gotta love it.

I've never watched Pulp Fiction on edited TV. *That* had to be a challenge for the dubbers.

I do not remember the name of the movie, however, in the original, John Amos' character says this line (paraphrased):
I am [an asshole]. I'm just YOUR TYPE of asshole.

The edited version:

Dave Coulier used to dub Richard Pryor's dialogue. Any time Pryor yelled a 4 letter word, Coulier would dub it with "WoW!" or "SHoot!" :D

I second that. I saw it on WGN about 10 years ago, absolutely hilarious. I love censored swears and use them more often than I actually curse and it's not because I'm being a prude, I just think it's flippin' funny. And my favorite is from Repo Man...

My favorite is in Blazing Saddles - the TV version I saw altered the pronunciation of Madeline Kahn's character's name - Lili von Shtupp. They didn't overdub it, they just cut it off so all you hear is 'Lili von Sht'. Why did they do this? Because 'shtup' is a slang term for sex - in Yiddish. I'll bet that 90% of the people watching didn't know why the name had been altered.

The same version of the same movie also removed all the farting sounds from the chuckwagon scene. All we see is a bunch of people sitting around eating beans.

Man, seeing that movie on ABC Family is an experience in itself. :D

Eons ago, when movies like Police Academy were considered funny, I remember seeing the TV version where the psycho cop got the drop on someone and said something like "Freeze, get on the ground you gosh-darned eggroll!"

Another dub that I recall was from Eddie Murphy's "Coming to America". When the Prince rear-ended a man whilst driving, the man jumped out of his car and yelled, "You dumb F***!". The edited version: "You dumb JERK!"

Blade 2 was kinda funny. When Blade armed the UV light grenade and threw it into the water, changing the words "YOU DO NOT KNOW WHO YOU ARE FUCKING WITH!!!!" to "YOU DO NOT KNOW WHO YOU ARE *brief pause*MESSING *brief pause* WITH!!!"

CBF, how could you forget that the whole line in Die Hard 2 is overdubbed by someone with a distinctive non-Bruce Willis accent.
And I think it's "Mr. Falcone" not Falone.

"Son of a beast" was indeed excellent dubbing.

And in the commercials for the Blade 2 theatrical release, it was done so smoothly (just like Training Day) that you thought it may have actually been "messing" instead of "f*cking". In the tv version, it's "fooling"

In the network version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, instead of the gorilla bouncer's inhumanly deep voice calling Eddie a wise ass, he instead says "wise guy" in a voice that sounds vaguely like Woody Allen.

Oh god yes! That one cracked me up when I was about eight! I don't know how they could've thought they'd pull that one over.

What about selective profanity dubbing? Watch Back to the Future II for one of my favorite examples of this:

Alternate Biff comes home and says: "You're supposed to be in Switzerland, you little son of a bitch!" On television it's: "you little snot-nosed brat" But in that same scene in the television version, after Biff hits Lorraine, Marty runs up to him screaming, "You son of a bitch!" unedited.

Because, while it's easy to throw out some egregious examples, most of the time, it's not better, it passes quickly and largely unnoticed if they simply cover it over.

That movie was Johnny Dangerously; and it wasn't dubbing. The running gag was that the foreign mobster kept mispronouncing American profanities.

I remember watching Sweet Smell of Success (1957), and the TV print my station used had the word "heroin" muted. Drove me crazy trying to figure out what they were saying.

I don't get cable (some people just don't get it), but I visited my mother in the hospital several times last month and got a chance to see what I've been missing. AMC was showing Hoffa, and the vulgarities were muted, but they were uncensored in the closed captions!

I hardly want to endorse more vulgar language on TV, but can't they come up with better substitutions? So often what they dub in wouldn't be used on a TV sitcom for laughs, much less in a drama.

It was "farg" not "frag" though. I remember because I used to say words that sounded like curse words inspired by him.
And you're dead on about the captioning, AMC does it a lot. I sometimes say, 'guess they forgot to tell the captioning people that it's censored'.

Even better was when the priest missed the last putt in the lightning storm and he yelled "RAT FART". For years I thought that was a dub, but when I saw the movie on video, he actually said that!

When the Waco Kid tells his life story, and about how some little squirt "shot me right in the ass", they replaced "ass" with an obviously badly edited "you know" :D
