They never really said his name until well after the fact. I think they felt embarrased calling him "Amazo."

Back in his first appearance, when Lex was looking at the blueprints, you could see his name was Amazo. But they never actually came out and said his name until his third appearance in "Wake the Dead."

True... he's always referred to as "the Android," or sometime's "Ivo's Android."

...yellow?

He turned gold after his big ascension deal in his first appearance.

What's his deal comic wise anyway? There's been more than one hasn't there?

In the comics, he's an android that mimics the powers of the JLA. There've been a bunch. They're usually not omnipotent threats like the cartoon version, though. And they usually have far worse dress sense.

Really, the cartoon version owes more to Marvel's Super-Adaptoid than it does to DC's Amazo.

You know I never really thought about that. You would think Marvel would have been pissed at them basically coping their design. Who was around first Amazo or the Adaptoid?

Amazo came first, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back in the Brave and the Bold JLA try-out issues. You know, the version of Amazo depicted in the late, lamented Hourman series seemed almost as powerful as his cartoon incarnation after he absorbed half of Hourman's original Worlogog powers, but he gained a really lame-assed skull-faced look. It was awesome how they handled him(?) in that series: he actually gained human emotions at one point. Too bad that hasn't been followed up in his later appearances.
Anyone wanna upload an Amazo cosume gallery? Pretty Please???

I figured Marvel saw it as a nice shout out to them a la "the Defenders" vibe I get from Fate's group.

(Tell me I'm not the only one who thought "Defenders" when seeing Fate's group?

Fate - Strange
Orin - Namor
Grundy - Hulk

Hell, when they added Amazo AND Hawkgirl, talk about blatant.

Even their personalities were more like the Defenders.

I found one of his earlier Pre-Crisis pics, which is the first one. Picture 2 is from another comic book cover that should show the Amazo version that fought Aztek, the JLA and Hourman at one point. Picture 3 is the toy versions of Amazo from the JLU cartoon.

Nowadays, the Amazo androids are sporting the classic Silver Age look from up above :D

I'm also not sure that there'd be any real basis for a lawsuit. I know we're a litigious country here but they can't sue DC over the idea of Amazo's powers since DC (I think) had it first and in any event it's pretty common. And the look is basically giant, naked, bald, Ken doll painted one solid color. Hardly the height of originality.

Besides which, there seems to be a lot of give and take between the two largest companies in this field. DC didn't sue Marvel over Squadron Supreme after all, right?

Super-Adaptoid was pretty close to an Amazo rip-off in the first place, so I can't imagine anyone getting too worked up over it.

That said . . . I don't think Amazo's original gimmick was copying a superhero's powers. I think the powers were either simulated or leeched, I forget which. The scanning and copying thing is his current deal, sure, but I'm relatively sure that's a post-Crisis modification. For Super-Adaptoid, on the other hand, that was always his shtick.

It's a very fine distinction, but I think it's worth mentioning.

Yeah. When I was a little kid, one of my first exposures to comics was this tiny mini-comic (smaller than digests) of the Justice League fighting Amazo. It was from some promotion... maybe a fast food place? Was it Pizza Hut? No, Pizza Hut had mini X-Men comics.

Anyway, this JLA comic featured Wonder Woman, Flash, GL (Hal Jordan), Ice and, I think, Superman fighting Amazo. As Amazo was copying their powers, the heroes began to get weaker. It was a real big problem for GL and Ice who were trying to keep a bridge full of people from collapsing. And the more Amazo absorbed, the weaker the heroes got. I forget how it ended, but this little comic always stuck with me.
