I appreciate the need to fund the site via advertising, it's perfectly understandable.
But why must there not only be pop-ups, but pop-ups which get past the pop-up blocking software installed in Safari, Firefox, etc.?
The CBR Forums have no pop up advertising.
The main CBR site does and, as you pointed out, it uses that advertising to pay for it's very existence. It is necessary, unfortunately.
yeah, CBR has never caused me any problems with that sort of stuff. so you may want to do a systemwide check of your computer for spyware from other stuff on you computer.
I think he's talking about the one on the main page i.e. www.comicbookresources.com. I haven't been able to block that one either.

Use of pop-ups on the main page is one reason I almost never go to the main CBR page. Even though my system blocks them, that didn't use to be the case, and annoyance with the pop-ops put me out of the habit of going to the main page.

Old habit, and general annoyance with the practice of pop-up ads. I still get the little banner that a pop-up was blocked by my system.
I also tend to avoid MSN due to the prevalence of pop-ups, so don't take it personally, Jonah.

Personally, I have no problem with ads but I think pop-ups, especially if there's more than one, is inconsiderate and I try not to do business with people or websites who use multiple pop-ups.
Adbars are fine and if you really want my attention, hire a decent graphic artist to do them.

You don't like elongated, oscillating animals offering you low mortgage rates?

I agree. I work for one of the largest websites in Canada, and we are actively trying to encourage our advertisers to NOT use pop-up ads.
Of course advertisers are always looking for ways to get eyeballs, but there are so many better ways than pop-up advertising, which in my opinion only appeal to "the lowest common denominator".
What I REALLY object to are sites that allow ads which propegate spyware to exist. Yes I know you need money to keep the site running, but ads for smiley's, or those awful trick ads that look like a system error should not be accepted. We also refuse to accept any ads which make a claim to have something to do with the site (You were the 100,000th visitor to this site so you win a prize).
Every ad serving company will allow you to block certain ads. I would highly recommend telling them you won't accept any ads for spyware. Ultimately CBR is a brand, and that brand should stand for something.

I hate to admit this, but I never click on ads, on *any* site. I've been burned too many times: a) taking forever for redirects, b) the target site WASN'T what was advertised, c) the target site had a flood of pop-ups, d) I'd forget where I originally started, get so frustrated I just bail out of the web browser and go do something else...or f) the redirect makes a quick jump to a 'middle site', which tries to load malware/spyware/cookie hacks on the way to the target site.
I got so fed up, I switched to Mac and Safari.
I block pop-ups, offsite ads and sometimes graphics. When I'm REALLY in a hurry, I turn off CSS and javascript rendering. All that extra code gets blocked, and pages (like the forums here) load twice as fast.

I block everything that I possibly can. Some still get through. :(

I don't get those Pop Ups . I have Ad-Aware and Pop Up Buster on too. So I have 2 things to block Pop Ups. So they never get thru on the main page of CBR.

I've got Firefox with the AdBlock extension and I don't get any pop-ups anywhere any more.

Should be.
Too bad it isn't.

Shortly before CBR sometimes becomes unreachable... not just me apparently but all CBR users, I sometimes get a series of pop-up messages on my screen, always saying the same thing:
"Alert: The operation timed out when attempting to contact ads.comicbookresources.com."
I will get these alerts every 30 seconds or so for a while, and then CBR freezes up on me.

Enigma pop-up blocker works really well.
the only drawback is that if someone posts a link like this one (http://www.cbr.cc) that would cause a new browser window to pop up, you have to disable it for the new window to appear. So you might say it works too well.
