View Full Version : Imperial Guard on a X-Men team

If one of the Imperial Guards had to be on one of the 3 X-Men teams, who would you pick and why and on which of the 3 would you put him/her and why??

hmm...that's a tough one because with the exception of Gladiator they were scarcely developed as characters (personalitywise) so it's hard to know what they'd bring to the table. Just going on concept, appearance, and powers alone my favorites is Hobgoblin. I think his antennae are adorable and I've always had a softspot for shapeshifters. He could concievably be an interesting addition to adjectiveless. It would be fun to see what personality Milligan would give him (although with Mystique having been introduced one shapeshifter is probably enough).
Another possiblity would be Delphos, who is a precog. We don't see many of those :)

None. The inclusion of aliens dilutes the concept of the X-Men, in my opinion. I'd rather the space stuff be saved for the Avengers, or at the very least, special occasions.

Monstra. The X-Men need some diversity. And a purple-skinned, four-armed, four-breasted, three-eyed chick is exactly what they should have.

I would choose Manta or Hussar.

The Imperial Guard serve the Shiar Empire. I don't think any of the guard would serve any real purpose among the X-Men.

I wouldn't want any of the Imperial Guard as a member of the X-Men.
I personally cannot stand it when the X-Men teams have a non-mutant member (Longshot, Warlock/Douglock, Val Cooper, Birdbrain, Shatterstar, Daytripper, etc.). It just dilutes the whole point.

theoretically all the members of the imperial guard might be mutants.
as for who to join- as the imperial guard all started out as legion of super-heroes analogues, i'd like to see the shadow lass counterpart and the phantom girl counterpart join. i cannot remember their names and am far too lazy to go look.

Er, diversity dilutes "the point" of peaceful co-existance? Seriously?

Aside from a few exceptions such as Mimc (who blackmailed his way to join the X-Men), Longshot (genetically created human being), X-Men must be mutants. Warlock was determined to be a mutant--not because of his natural technarchy form--but he did not possess the killer instinct that is dominant in his race. Warlock simply wanted to live in peace. He did not want to kill or be killed by his all powerful father, Magus.

I understand the reasoning behind various alien mutants and hybrids (Warlock's compassion, Longshot's spine, the mutant skrulls, the Braddock children, etc) but it always seemed more like an "excuse" than anything to me. I've never understood the rational that X-Men "must be mutants", it seems rather hypocritical given Xaiver's integrational philosophies. Really though, I doubt such a rule is actually in place either... otherwise why would Xaiver have offered Carol Danvers membership? Why would the X-Men offer Longshot sactuary? Then you also have the various splinter X-teams offering membership to non mutants (Cerise, Feron, Shard, Shatterstar, Daytripper, etc)

Agreed - there are no X-Men bylaws that one must be a mutant to join the X-Men - I think they even offered Spider-Man a place once. They existed to help people cope with their paranormal powers, and specialized in abilities granted by the "mutant gene." This did not rule out helping or admitting others. Otherwise, the aforementioned Mimic, Ms. Marvel, Longshot, or Juggernaut would never have been offered membership. It would be a stupid, racist, and ultimately counter-productive rule. That said, their membership should probably be 99% mutant anyway, for storyline/branding's sake.
Oh, and that dinosaur Imperial Guard character didn't die - that was just one of his bodies that got killed.

You assume, dearheart, that the point of the X-Men is Xavier's dream of peaceful co-existence. The actual point of the X-Men is angst-filled people with enormous power and skin-tight clothing suffering because of the vast prejudice of the unbathed majority.
Or at least that's what many fans would have you believe.....

Silly me, taking fictional mission statements over the real draw of serial fiction. Should've known better.
Still... I wouldn't mind seeing a few more humans/aliens/hybrids at the Institute. What ever happened to the Warpies? They'd fit in pretty nicely at Xaivers I think, especially now that Betsy's back in action.

Carol Danvers did not meet Professor Xavier until Avengers Annual #10 by Spider-Woman I's advice; Xavier's telepathy restored a majority of Carol's memories. However, Carol did not possess any emotional connection to her memories anymore; the memories might as well belonged to someone else. Rogue possessed all of Carol's memories as Ms. Marvel. Unbeknownst to Xavier & Carol Danvers herself, Rogue gained a second personality, Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel, but this persona was usually deeply submerged in Rogue's own consciousness. The Ms. Marvel persona would only come out when Rogue was under great stress. Carol did move into Xavier's school for a short time after Avengers Annual #10. This was how she was abducted by the Brood & was exposed to their science which transformed Carol into Binary. Colossus did offere Carol membership into the X-Men after she became Binary because she was now a mutant due to her human-Kree hybrid genes. But Binary chose to join the Starjammers since Rogue joined the X-Men.
The X-Men never said why they offered Longshot sanctuary.
Amanda Sefton is not a mutant; she is a sorceress. She is an X-Men ally & joined the Muir Island team when the X-Men were attacked by the Reavers.
The Warpies were being born due to the effects of the Jaspers Warp. They were not even natural for mutant children. RCX took them in for care.
Xavier has close ties to Reed Richards. Xavier got custom made costumes for the new X-Men which were composed of unstable molecules.
If the X-Men were to allow anyone with superhuman powers to join the team, the book would lose its brand identity. Therefore, most of the X-Men must be mutants of some kind to join the team.

I dunno, they'd still be the X-Men. Says so on the cover every month.
Excalibur never really lost it's identity as a mutant team, even when only about half the lineup were actual mutants. I'm not advocating the X-Men start seeking out non-mutants or anything, but it'd be nice to see a few non-mutant members again here or there.
Also, no need to limit these things to super powers. I've always enjoyed baseline humans like Moria MacTaggert, Stevie Hunter or Charlotte Jones sticking around and working with the teams.

X-Men are born with their powers. This is what sets the X-Men apart from Fantastic Four, the Avengers, Spider-Man. The X-Men are also hated by the general public; whereas, the FF & Avengers are treated as celebrities.
Excalibur was born from Alan Moore, Jamie Delano, & Alan Davis' Captain Britian; although Brian Braddock is not a mutant, his Captain Britian powers are intristic in nature. Furthermore, Brian's link to the X-Men is his sister, Betsy Braddock, Psylocke, is an X-Man. Excalibur combined aspects of Uncanny X-Men & Captain Britian. Excalibur formed to take the X-Men's place since they were believed dead. You had to have read the Uncanny X-Men at the time when Excalibur was formed to fully understand the connection.

I understand the difference between mutants and superhumans just fine, and I remember Excalibur's formation as well. They still retained an identity as a mutant team though (fighting for Xaiver's ideals) and surprisingly actually had a very good public image... perhaps that has something to do with the team's historical mix of mutants and non-mutants? Or maybe Europeans are just more tolerant than us Americans? Whatever the case, even in it's short time, Excalibur seemed rather successful at changing public attitudes towards mutants.
I also wouldn't make such a clear distinction between public attitudes from mutants to superhumans. In Rachel's future and the Jaspers storyline, both were hunted just the same...

I do not see how it can dilute the concept by allowing non-mutants in the team. It is silly to think the X-Men would be prejudiced against someone when that is basically what they are fighting for.
Just like I like Justice, Silhouette, Firestar, etc being members of teams that are not "X" related, I like people like Cerise, Amanda, etc being members of the "X" teams. I feel that is the true point of the X-Men. Acceptance. Why can only mutants fight for the dream?

Mutants are the subject matter in X-Men. It's essential to the book's brand identity. Yes, Avengers have several mutants in their ranks such as Beast, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Justice, & Firestar; however, the point of the Avengers is different than the X-Men. The Avengers are public heroes who have deep connections to the US government & a specific charter. The X-Men is a private organization specifically a place for mutants to learn to control their powers. Not all mutants are X-Men. Emma Frost, Sebastian Shaw, Harry Leland, Selene never allied themselves with Xavier; for a long time, as the Lords Cardinal, they were the X-Men's deadliest foes antithetical to Xavier's dreams. Frost only allied herself with Xavier after she almost died & willed her estate to Xavier's school.

Hussar--along with Warstar & the deceased Fang--allied with Deathbird & the Brood to overtake Lilandra's throne. Why would the X-Men be friendly to Hussar? From the data given, Hussar is not a mutant, but she is reliant on her neuro whip. The X-Men's history with the Imperial Guard has never been on good terms.

I think it might have been super-ceded - in their last appearance of my recollection, the 2001 Excalibur limited, the Warpies were in their original Warpie forms, all non-human but also not the killing machines they later got transformed into (by Warren Ellis?)

Most of these are correct:
Here's what I've got so far - any help with the list?
Gladiator - Mon-El
Astra - Phatom Girl
Fang - Timber Wolf
Hobgoblin - Chameleon Boy
Impulse - Wildfire
Mentor - Braniac 5
Midget - Shrinking Violet
Oracle - Saturn Girl
Quasar - Star Boy? Probably no real counterpart, though he reminds me of Blok. Blok only joined later though IIRC. Perhaps Ferro Lad.
Smasher - Ultra Boy
Starbolt - Sun Boy
Tempest - Lightning Lad
Titan - Collosal Boy
Nightside - Shadow Lass
Magique/Magic - White Witch or Projectra? Princess Projectra it is
Manta - ??? no counterpart.. Perhaps Sensor Girl if you are really reaching, but no real counterpart named
Warstar - ??? Duo Damsel? again no counterpart
Earthquake - ??? Blok? Perhaps Star Boy, no real counterpart that I know off though. Star Boy works with gravity though so it doesn't really fit.
Hussar - ???
N’rill’iree - ???
Webwing - ???
Blackthorn - ???
Zenith - ???
Black Light - ???
White Noise - ???
Onslaught - Karate Kid
Solar Wind - ???
Moondancer - Moonstar? I think you mean Dawnstar
Glom - Matter-Eater Lad? Matter-Eater Lad it is
Voyager - Gates??? Voyager is older than Gates, but the powers do fit.
Hardball - Bouncing Boy
Commando II - ??? [b]Mon-El again, his real name is even M'Nell.
Delphos - Dream Girl
Mammoth - ???
Stuff - ??? Chameleon Boy again I guess
Squorm - Quislet??? probably no direct counterpart
Monstra - Monstress
Arc II - ??? Lightning Lad again
G-Type - ??? Wildfire again
Neosaurus - ??? Braniac 5, I guess
Plutonia - ??? Phantom Girl again
Fader - Invisible Kid
Blimp - ??? Bouncing Boy again
Schism - Duo Damsel
Cosmo - ??? Blok or Ferro Lad again, I guess.. Perhaps Star Boy
Not all of the Imperial guard members were Legion-inspired (the Byrne ones weren't IIRC, that means Hussar, Warstar etc.)
As for

I think the best one right now would be Oracle-considering that after the events in Thanos, she's comatose, handing her over to the Institute for the telepaths there to help would show a renewing connection between the Shi'ar and Xavier's brood.

The Starjammers limited series simply showed a cameo of Ceris in the Warren Ellis story. Cerise my be one of Lilandra's personal body guards, but this does not make her a member of the Imperial Guard.

But isn't that essentially the Imperial Guard's function? They're basically Lilandra's Secret Service?
Cerise hasn't been confirmed to be a Super Guardian or anything, but she has the exact same job description. Put two and two together.

I was considering doing a profile month for them, once upon the time. Although, their appearances seem to only include them in group Shi'ar battles, really. It's why I opted not to.
Gladiator and Oracle are the only ones who have a big personality. To a lesser extent, Smasher, Warstar. Hussar is pretty cool, for being a criminal exile.
It's more that they're Legion parallels, really, that makes them interesting.
