Hi Gail. You promised to tell us if you prefer a married or unmarried Superman. Well??

Here's how I see it.

All the great serial fiction characters have different phases of history. Sherlock Holmes pre and post falls, Conan the youth to Conan the King, etc.

To me, Superman is in his married phase, and I think it's valid and fascinating. I know many fans and readers hate it, but to me, it's part of what Superman IS now, and I kinda rejoice in it. If I were writing tales from earlier in his history, it'd be a very different tone.

Best,

Gail

one thing's for certain... I hope he signed a prenup.

I hear the big Infinite Crisis is going to be "The Divorce of Superman!"

Lois hires Lex's Lawyers, sues and gets half of the Fotress of Solitude... and shared custody of the robots. This follows "World without Lois" and "Reign of the Rebounds"

That might actually crack the internet in half.

I agree with the idea that a story about an unmarried Superman is a different beast than a story about a married Superman.

I know that there was some internal discussion at one point about making ADVENTURES a LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT-style book and I still support the idea.

I'd like a dose of early-style Superman stories to compliment the modern stuff. I'm looking forward to All-Star immensely for that reason.

I mean, I agree that right now is the time for married Supes. (I think we will eventually come full circle on that point, say, when all the readers who grew up on the classic triangle are pretty much gone and there's a generation of readers who was never exposed to the Clark-Lois-Superman dynamic and there are enough writers and editors eager to offer a new take on the relationship.)

Still, unmarried Superman just feels... classic. Like a nice cold vanilla coke. I think there's a market for it. I think most of the post-Crisis comics (and the Superman Animated Series and even Lois & Clark) have pretty much failed to exploit the concept of a single Superman even when they had access to it.

But I think to grasp it, you have to imagine this important, powerful guy who can do impossible things that goes home to his quiet little apartment at 344 Clinton Avenue where he has this small, monastic experience of eating TV dinners in solitude. He can see distant stars ignite in radiant deathcries and observe single celled organisms clinging on in a struggle towards life as we know it but for all of his powers, he is alone in wild and vibrant universe. His amazing sensory powers only serve to remind him of how alone he is. His fantastic life is but one story cast amidst the tide of infinite others and he is on the outside. He smiles and does good not out of profound connection to his fellow man but because every moment, every day, he makes a conscious effort to follow his heart, even when it's empty.

Compared to that, even his harshest struggles today -- even witnessing the death and destruction reigning throughout the DCU -- is a victory lap compared to the solitude which once permeated his life.

He's married Dennis.

Of course he doesn't have sex.

Actually all the time. It's pretty much a requisite in any Superman story to toss in a scene of Lois and Clark in bed (or taking a bath or getting dressed) as they fire innuendos back and forth.

For a second, I thought Red was asking if Gail was married.

So Gail...if I say, what about the famous 'Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex' scenario...does this mean anything to you?
If so: what's your solution?

Red Kryptonite Condoms ribbed for her pleasure.

or maybe Superman takes a hit of Red Sun Radiation before bed?

I used to love the Earth-2 "Mr. and Mrs. Superman" stories of the polyester age because they gave us a break from the "ooops, Lois suspects I'm Superman - again!" chemistry that got a little stale over on Earth-1.

So I'm ok with this.

At least it wasn't his parents' basement with a collection of Black Canary and Wonder Woman figurines.

Ah Gail, spoken like a very wise woman. It's why I admire you so much. ;)

They will be divorced after the Crisis, but Lois will show up in her weird time travel bubble thing, murder the post-crisis Lois, and get back together with Superman. Afterwards, she will gain super powers, kill Lana, and run away with Batman.

That's my prediction at least.
