The creators have said that they will never say the last name of the family or where they live, so that they would not be limited by ethnic or regional stereotypes. (For example, a polish background, Arizona desert, etc.)

According to the trivia section (http://imdb.com/title/tt0212671/trivia) of the IMDB, the family's last name was originally going to be "Wilkerson". As you can see, the dialouge was cut for the reasons that riotgear mentioned.
