Well, if ABBA is not really a form of deep fried kuskus and is actually a band (Not willing to accept that just yet) they can have a song that is the least worse, can't they?

I have and "Dancing Queen" still tops "Fernando" easily, and is the best of the bunch. (Though that said, where is "Waterloo"?)
And I agree that Pip should turn his gay card in at the door. Loving ABBA is a requirement for being gay as surely as loving Led Zeppelin is a requirement for being a heterosexual male. (Unless of course you are a communist...)

Anyway. Really, you should have included at least Take a Chance on Me, Supertrooper, Gimme Gimme Gimme and Waterloo in your poll.
"Winner takes it all."

It does doesn't...but you can sing-a-long to the ebullient chorus!!!
Personally I think that ABBA's a lot like Phil Spector: they've got more value in the music as opposed to the lyrics which are really just emotionally manipulative pap on which to hang on sing-a-long melodies and perfect arrangements.

Knowing that I'll bring the ire of all Abba haters down on my head, like I posted before, one of my guilty, guilty pleasures is that I like several of Abba's songs. I'd have to go with "Dancing Queen" as the best although I really like "Does Your Mother Know"

There ARE no great ABBA songs....just a bunch of Scandi's singing phoenetic English to disco tracks! I say this despite the fact that a good friend was in the Broadway production!

Eh, they're the best 'guilty pleasure' band out there. The musical Mamma Mia is going to tour my neck of the woods later this year. I'm curious, I'll admit...
And for the record, either Mamma Mia or Take a Chance. Can't break the tie.

I just realized that I kind of like the song "Like An Angel Passing Through My Room" in the version by Anne Sofie Von Otter with Elvis Costello. I've never heard the original ABBA version though, so I don't know how much Anne and Elvis improved on it.

my grandmother named me okay...
she was too old to like abba in 1977.
my parents however - loved the monkey manure to death.
for years, my parents played that crap, choking me on an abba/boney M super cocktail..
it got worse, whem my older brother discovered wham and my sister shoved in new kids on the block.
i used to hide in the closet with my guns n roses and skid row tapes...numbing out the painful effects of new kids, abba, boneyM, and wham....
'appetite for destruction' was my saviour.

I knew "Abba" meant father in Hebrew. Never really heard of the band before this thread.
I had to consult Wikipedia.
They broke up about the time I turned two.
I think I've heard about a five second clip of "Dancing Queen" in the background in several movies and TV shows. Oh! And I heard "Voulez-Vous" maybe twice on the radio after Christina Aguilera's version came out.
My parents were into "Simon & Garfunkel", "John Denver". I grew up on nothing but folk until the age of eight. Then I got into classic motown. I have an uncle who recorded me an album with all the standards. From there I went to cinematic scores, which is just GREAT to drive to, IMO, or walk around listening to with headphones. It's like having musical underscoring for your LIFE! I loved trying to synch up the tracks with things going on around me.
Found my way to punk, straight-up rock and 90s pop alternative.
But these Abba people represent something totally alien to me.

Dude. I know the Beatles.
Never listened to Pink Floyd of my own free will and while I know of Led Zeppelin, don't think I've ever heard their stuff.
I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to the 70s and 80s music.
I know my cousin was into White Snake. A few people I went to school with liked KISS. Most of my friends were into rap and mid 1990s alternative.
I dig the Beatles a bit though.

S.O.S. is my favorite ABBA song on your list. I could never admit liking them until I got dragged to see Mama Mia with my wife and mother in law. I gave in. (Bjorn again, I guess : ) ) I now think that there are two types of people: those who openly like ABBA and those who pretend not to like ABBA.

God has nothing to do with it. It's the females. They have this coterie called The Bathroom Squad, which picks out males to be tormented. So when you see a gaggle of females head to the bathroom, pray that you won't be their selected target.
