View Full Version : Favorite Supporting Character From Any Gail Comic

Gail Simone

I'm just wondering...hopefully this won't come off as ego, because I rarely include my stuff in these questions. But since early on, I've often had issues of various series where one supporting character or another got more chatter than the main character. So, do you have a favorite supporting character from any of the books I've worked on, and it doesn't have to be a character I created.

Just wondering for sheer fun's sake. Indulge me, damn you all! :)

Best,

Gail

Lois Lane, Lois Lane, Lois Lane, Lois Lane, Lois Lane.

Really.

Lois Lane.

Lois Lane.

P.S. I think Jimmy Olsen is neat, too.

Yeah, honestly, I can't stand how good the Superman supporting cast is. I can't believe some writers actually COMPLAIN about them. For god's sake, they rock just as they were meant to be, without major overhauls, in my opinion.

And I'm crazy about Zinda, too...we'll get to see a bit more of her soon!

And that was John Mercado, Pip. Adriana draw hot GOOD hot nice!

Me like Zinda too.

She's got the goods characterwise and doesn't look like a joke in her uniform.

Lois Lane is a classic to say the least and helps remind Supes he doesn't have to be a god in longjohns and cape all the time.

I'm REALLY liking your Lois/Jimmy.

Do the Birds really HAVE a "supporting cast"?

Well, I cheated in the other thread and named Gail supporting characters as my favorites but I'll name them again.

Outlaw-and not just because she wears her cowgirl boots even with a skirt like I do.
Zinda-actually it'd be nice if Zinda had some more dialouge and panel time so that she could be more that just a great supporting character.

I'm not familiar enough with Superman's cast yet to include Lois but I have a feeling she'll be up there soon enough. ;)

Sorry Gail, I didn't read this before I posted my suggestion for more Zinda.

I'm looking forward to see more of her. More Zinda makes me happy!!!!

BTW, very nice flying sequence of Zinda in the last issue ;)

I've always loved the Superman supporting cast and I hope you get to use all of them at some point during your run *coughmaandpakentcough* But I really enjoy how you're writing Perry White. But don't forget that he also has a softer side.

If he has a Y chromosome, he's a supporting character in BoP. ;)

It's Zinda by a wide margin, I'm sure...
She's got personality by the bucketful,is tough and competent, and has the legendary 'Blackhawk' cachet.
I must also say that pre-Zinda, I also loved the way you handled Ted Kord as the ongoing 'IT' guy with an unrequited crush on Babs, ( yeah, I really miss him ).
I liked your reporter in the Legion issues...(can't remember her name)...but the LSH really needs some outside POV to work and they have been woefully weak on a strong supporting cast...at least one that stayed around.
For me, the whole Savant thing is OK, but not compelling...I don't really care about those guys.
I liked Josh...and I want to know more of his story...looks like this is coming up soon.
I wouldn't mind seeing some updates on some of the other people who've been in BOP past issues...where are they now?
One thing that's always surprised me in your background plots...not much contact or interaction between Commissioner Gordon and Barbara. I know she's not looking for approval from Dad, but I figured she'd be keeping tabs on him and vice-versa.
Haven't read enough Action to see where you're going with Supes, but there's a rich history to draw from there.
My ideal supporting cast would be more like those in Asterix....a population in the village we all know and love and whom we get to see more or less of, based on the context of that plot! Love that Dogmatix!

Savant! My sweet, evil Brian. Barnone, he's my favorite supporting cast member (and, I guess, original character) created by you/Gail.

A pox on Zinda and Josh! We need more Savant.

Another vote of love for Zinda.

Savant too. Less shirt, the better. Mm, beefcake :)

I think Zinda's great. Even though I'm an old time comic reader, I don't think I'd ever read a story that featured her before.

Why do I like her?

For one, she's unusual in that an older woman, something we don't get too much of in comics, and she's not an extension of any male character--not wife or girlfriend. She had comrades, of course, but she was part of the team, not a hanger-on.

And, she's incredibly competent at her own profession.

Plus, I love the way she feels out of time.

The reporter(Trudy Trueso) was created by Abnett and Lanning, but Gail was the first one to get into her head.

A moot point, alas...thanks to Waid rebooting everything.

I like Outlaw, Lois Lane, Ratbag...

I thought that poor shmoe trying to avoid gettting killed by Jimmy's antics in that last Action Comics was pretty adorable. I don't know if he's just a one-off or, but I'd like to see more of him. I forget his name, he was the old reporter teamed with Jimmy "I'm Superman's Pal so I can act like a crazy mo-fo" Olsen.

The couple of scenes you've done between Barbara and Jim Gordon are standout favorites of mine. I love their vibe together, and would love to see more of him in BoP!

And, of course, Lois. Lois rocks!

Huzzah!

Agent x's supporting cast. All solid. Mary Zero great tragic hilarious character..who'd have thought it possible. outlaw awesome superlady. tastmaster great relationship with agent x.

And i never could get into supermans supporters. I mean they have to be the worst reporters ever.

And Lois got superpowers too much.

And Jimmy got turned into a gorilla too much. And superman threw him in jail too much

etc.

Agreed.

He was quite good as well.

What I liked about him was that he was one of those "silent additions" to a supporting cast.

I like those.

Like Lois' cameraman (although I'm not a big fan of the cameraman so far...not as much personality as the old reporter).

It's gotta be Zinda for me! But only because I never read any Deadpool/Agent X. I bet I would have loved Taskmasker and co!

Is this all just a scheme to see who you can kill off??? LOL ;)

Anyway! Zinda is perfectly used in BIRDS. She plays her role, gets a few bigger parts every few issues, and when she IS used, is wonderfully characterized and written (quality over quantity).

Not sure if I consider Savant and Creole as supporting characters or antagonists - but I like them kept occassionally in the background - and as Huntress' current muscle is perfect.

Josh, I would have liked to seen a minor appearance following up on the date before his current use - just to get his reaction "the next day."

ACTION it's still early, but I think supporting characters in a solo heroes book are different than for a team -- since you only have one main character, they HAVE to have a bigger role. I see Lois as much more than a supporting character, but rather a female lead and should get a fairly large role.

Jimmy's always been a favorite. I'd like to see him get a good spotlight issue and/or ongoing storyline once a year

Anthony Yeoh, the guy who first appeared in BOP #81. Fantastic character, always engaging. I'd like to see more into his back story please.

Since I don't want to be the 500th person on this thread to say Zinda, I'll go with my second choice: Lex Luthor of The Society of Super Villains from Villains United. I don't remember if that is their actual name, but it doesn't matter right now. I love the idea of the most dangerous DC Super Villain joining forces with others and organizing as many other Villains as they can. It makes for one hell of a Comic Book Universe.

Well, me too on Gordon. But I thought maybe I'd be getting redundant to say that.

Also wanted to add love Lois. Btw, Gail, if you're still reading, you handled her reporting job exactly right in the first Action issue, with ambushing the fellow but then explaining her reasoning.

Did I mention that before?

YES! Someone else who likes Creote AND Black Alice. I just love both the ideas of a big muscle-bound Russian and a teen who can channel anyone's magic.

And one more vote for Zinda. Lots of Zinda-love right here.

I *love* how you're writing Lois and Jimmy. Although I agree with Drumore, I think Lois is more a female lead than a supporting character. She's a great character in her own right and I would love to see her popping up in other DCU books and interacting with the other heroes like she used to. And your Jimmy is perfect. I also like the new characters you've introduced into Action.
