View Full Version : Should I keep my beard?

Mike Smash!
06-20-2005, 03:17 PM
I've had this beard for about two months now and trying to figure out if I want to keep it or not.

I will warn you that I'm not at my prettiest in the pic below. I still need to take a shower today and I'm fairly sunburnt from two 12-14 hour days outside this weekend.

So... keep it? Lose it?

There's pros and cons to having a beard:

PRO:

- You don't have to shave. No fussing, no cuts, no razor burn. Ten more minutes in the morning to sleep in.

- Join the ranks of famous people who wore facial hair like Freud, Confuscious, Abraham Lincoln, etc.

- It tickles when you're trying to be intimate (not always a bad thing).

CON:

- Trapped food particles.

- Join the ranks of famous people who wore facial hair like Saddam Hussein, Charles Manson, Stalin, etc.

- Pogonophobic (those with abnormal and persistant fear of beards) may run from you in terror. I personally find mustaches sans beards a little creepy.

- The tickle factor (not always a good thing).

- You remind me of my dad.

Actually, I'm going to say keep it. You're young enough that looking younger isn't an issue. And since you're spending a lot of time marketing the Green Party, it's probably an advantage. Both in terms of looking older and looking crunchier. And you're in the Pacific NW. We have a different take on beards than a lot of the rest of the country. Finally, I saw you without it in Feb so I have a basis for comparison, and I think it just plain looks good too.

I had a full beard for about 7 months until I took it down to a goatee. it made me look thinner and younger, and at the end of this summer (after I lose more weight) I plan to shave it all off.

You've only had it for a couple of months, hardly even enough time to culitivate a look. Keep it at least long enough for people to identify you with a beard.

ragnarok_2012
06-20-2005, 07:34 PM
I'd say that having a beard or goatee would require more upkeep than being clean-shaven. I think it looks good on you, though as others have said the beard could use some trimming.

If you do decide to shave it off, I think you should try a goatee before you go clean-shaven. And if you're really feeling your oats, a Fu Manchu.

Make it so!

Trim the beard up. Get a mustache and beard trimming kit. Hell, I think the one I was given the last Chrismas only cost about $15 and it was DEFINITELY worth it. Once I figured out what setting was right for me, I just trimmed it down once a week or so. I like the bearded look on you, if it's neatly trimmed. Otherwise, it just looks dirty and unkept.

I shaved all my facial hair off back in the beginning of May or so. Might grow it back around September. My face may need the summers off from facial hair. Change is good.

But most of the women who voted in this poll told him to keep it. Depends on what kind of woman you're talking about. And what kind of beard, of course.

Edit: And that survey was British women. Which is true -- they have different tastes there than American/Canadian women do.

Mike,

Why did you do that?

You should have gone in shifts. Trim it down, then remove the beard, keeping the goatee. Then thinning the goatee, or losing the mustache.

That's how I got to where I am. I used to have a full blown beard, then I cut it down to where I am today. Mustache and chin pubes.

Grow it back!

Popular wisdom holds that beards evolved as protection from the cold, but beards appear in the tropics, and the Alaskan Inuit cannot grow them. Some scientists now speculate that beards evolved as cooling devices, to whisk sweat off the faces of hunters.

The first one is obviously dependent on the woman. My wife digs my beard, and a lot of women have counter-cultural tastes.

But the second article is hard to argue with . . . most might write Mike off as a radical Greenpeace activist, since he has a beard and is in the Green Party.
