View Full Version : Most Maligned Marvel Characters?

Well, I don't really care which character's been "most" maligned...
I just want to hear posters' opinons on which characters have been maligned, whether by writers or editors...
For instance, clearly Monica Rambeau, the second Captain Marvel, has suffered because of Marvel's wirters and editors. She was, for a few years at least, on the verge of being an iconic Marvel character. But alas, no more.
So, who do you feel has gotten a raw deal, and WHY?

I cant think of any charecter getting more of a raw deal than the aforementioned Monica Rambeau.

well i think darkstar got a raw deal. such massive unexplored potential and was killed off in a senseless way before she ever really had a chance.
let me think on this im sure ill think of more

Silver Surfer-the last volume. Since when does Silver Surfer follow random alien orders, and since when does he abduct children? Horrible writing, horrible attempt at a comic book.
Scarlett Witch-She's an Avenger. Let her stay a hero.
Ultimate Daredevil-It's my opinion that he isn't used properly in the Ultimate universe. Not enough of a vigilante.

I just dont think there are any proper stories that can be told with silver surfer. well INTERESTING stories that is.Definitely a good point, one that's probably been brought up before (but I'll be damned if I can remember). But WHAT actually caused this? Why has he been maligned? Surely SOMEBODY could come up with an interesting Surfer story.

I friggin LOVED Monica!!! I never understood why, but there's something about Captain Marvel/Photon/Monica Rambeau that attracted me. I think it's because she was a black female super hero who made someone of herself without resorting to "mimicing" an already popular male super hero (ala Spider Woman, She-Hulk, Supergirl, Batgirl...ect.) Her powers were very unique, and the way she was handled...she was SO powerful!! Turning into a being of living light? One of Marvel's few "speedsters" that could most likely defeat guys like the Flash? AWESOME!!
Just out of curiousity, could someone please give me a brief rundown on what happened to her? I mean...one minute she was one of the top 3 leaders of the Avengers (Captain America and Wasp being the other two) to making NO appearances save for goofy cameos. What happened?? :(

What happened?? :(Editorial forced Captain America back in as the leader of the Avengers. Monica was written out, more or less, being injured in battle against Marrina (as the Leviathan). Monica made a few more appearances as CM, but eventually appeared in the Captain Marvel limited series, facing off againsg Mar-Vell's son, Genis-Vell. Genis kept the CM name, and Monica assumed the Photon name. Monica's barely been seen since; mainly only during the first story arc of Avengers Vol.3, a brief arc later on involving Arkon, and lastly in the Kang War arc. She just appeared this month in New Thunderbolts confronting Genis-Vell again, who has assumed the name Photon. She seems to have assumed the name Pulsar.

Jack of Hearts. He could easily be one of Marvel's powerhouse cosmics, but gets relegated to rare secondary roles. His background easily sets up for some interesting and revealing storylines about the character.
Red State Cap

I'm going to say USAgent/John Walker. What could be an honest and interesting look at what a "conservative Cap" would be like is instead portrayed as a typical Marvel conservative caricature -- i.e. that right-wing heroes must be unstable, bigoted, reactionary, thoughtless jerks. It's unfortunate that a character with a lot of potential is being written by people who generally lean left and write him as a "right-winger seen through left-wing glasses."
Another good example is the recent Captain America & Falcon series, where the Anti-Cap is a totally unimaginative carbon-copy of John Walker.

Green Goblin. Where he used to be a rather dangerous threating presence, he's now a parody of himself mixed witha bit of Kingpin. Any real personality is gone and there's rarely six issues that go by without him being behind a major plot.
Shatterstar: Despite being a Liefeld chaarcter, i always thought there was plenty of potential behind a born warrior with a flash MTV style mentality to his fighting.
The Lucky One

To no one's surprise, I'm saying Longshot. I know you don't like him, Matt, but even you'll admit that he's one character that's been given a huge raw deal by Marvel, partially thanks to the 90s X-editors who reportedly hated the character, and wouldn't let writers use him. I didn't love him in the X-Men, but he's got a huge cult fanbase because of it, and his miniseries was magic... love or hate the character, no one can deny the quality of Nocenti and Adams's work on that mini. But now the character's been tainted by being too closely associated with Mojo -- now that the media parody has become all of the Mojoverse, rather than just a part of it, people don't like it anymore -- and is lucky if he gets half the appearances of Monica Rambeau in a given decade. So count your blessings, punks.

Rusty Collins and Skids. They showed a lot of potential (far more than Rictor and Boom Boom even) before being brainwashed by Stryfe and forced to work for him, then bumped over to Magneto's Acolytes, before Rusty was killed off unceremoniously and Skids was flung into limbo.
Poor Rusty and Skids. :(

I like Skids alot. if her powers were SLIGHTLY more offeinsive i could see her being written fairly well. like if her sheild not only deflected kinetic energy, but also fling things by touching it adding massive damage to her punhes

I always thought they could've done more with 90's hero "Ultra Girl". She had an interesting backstory, and was one of the few rare heroes based out of the West Coast. They could've done some interesting things with her. She was basically the "Supergirl" or "Power Girl" of the Marvel U. Maybe she can appear in Runaways or something. At least explain where she's at and what she's been up too.
I also totally, totally agree about Monica Rambeau....
The NW had introduced a cool character named Bengal back in their first series. Nothing has been done with him since. I'd like to see him make a comeback. His background story was immensely interesting.
And Dakota North needs to make a comeback too. Her and Silver Sable. ;)

OK ive thought on this, and i have to say iceman. now is he the MOST, probably not, but he is. most writers think the only way to write him is as a wise cracking youngster, well he is 26 now, and doesnt seem to really be maturing and it seems writers dont know how to use him correctly. then comes this whole secoond mutation business that completely ruined his charecter, he now has no real chance of having a real realation with anyone. and the fact that he was screwed over for leadership of his team doesnt help.

Damian Hellstrom, Son of Satan...
He hasn't been seen AT ALL since the 90's. Warren Ellis had a FANTASTIC thing going on "Hellstorm", but sales wern't rising fast enough and Marvel axed it. It didn't even end, just, wham.
wham.

The New Warriors.
The current mini featuring them might as well feature all brand new characters, it's such a far, far take from what the team used to be.
_Yes_ they've always been a team of teenage C-list, second banana heroes...but that was the POINT. They were out to prove that not being part of the "heroic elite" didn't mean that they could save the world just as well as any "big name" super.
Now they're an unfunny joke of a joke of a tired, worn-out joke. This is perhaps the zillionth take on "Super-Hero Team as Reality Show!" since DC put out "The Blood Pack" way back in the mid-90s. It's been done. Much, MUCH better (see X-Statix/WildGuard)...let it rest.
Wait...do grooups qualify, or are only single heroes acceptable?

He's been seen a couple of times since the 90s. Once in a 2000 FF annual in which he'd strangely becomes his 1970s self again...then later in a "Thunderbolts" annual in which he revealed that was just a disguise to fool Reed Richards. He tricked the Thunderbolts into freeing Hellcat from Hades, hasn't been seen since.

Iron Man-For the past ten years Marvel has been bouncing him around from one thing to another. He is a teenager, his secret identity is public knowledge, he is Secretary of Defense. When one these things don't work Marvel always seems to start him back at square one and then somewhere down the line changes him again.
