The art is great, but the dialog balloon is a bit askew. Almost as clumsy as the masthead pose of the "magnificent one" lingering on that vine.
I know they were trying to make Tharn sound like he might have a touch of hyborian vocal mannerisms, but "Scaly One?"

Hi, guys.
Yes, it was 10:58 p. m. local time when I posted that initial I. D. of the Jungle Action cover. It's now about to hit midnight, and I'm about to do the same to the hay.
A few notes first. I got home from work to the third clue'n'hint, and imediately knew that I recognised it. I just didn't know what it was. I dived into Marvel's eight-issue Doc Savage series and then Amazing Adventures with 'War of the Worlds'/'Killraven.' Then I gave up and had dinner. On subsequent reapplication to the problem I suddenly twigged that it was a Jungle Action cover, and it was the work of mere moments to ascertain which issue courtesy of the GCD. The Rich Buckler clue was an obvious, partially subconcious hint which I'm sure helped - without it I'd've been thinking Kane or Buckler, I think.
Sweet dreams, one and all.

RE FF 2;
From the first clues I was sure it was Simon and Kirby, not Lee and Kirby.
I looked at all their stuff like Newsboy Legion, Justice Traps the Guilty, Boys' Ranch, and even Stuntman. Newsboy Legion covers have lots of yellow backgrounds.
I saw the fourth clue as soon as you posted it and knew it was FF. But I figured it would already be solved if it was the regular FF book, so I looked at FF Annuals and Strange Tales covers.

I really thought this one would be solved earlier (I'm looking at you JB :D ).
Well... lemme see what kind of lame excuses I can come up with this time...
#1) Since I nailed the previous cover, I didn't want to be greedy.
#2) I don't have a foot fetus.
#3) Yellow. I can't stand the color yellow.
#4) I thought the "JA" letters were part of the name "Jaguar" and I was off looking at Archie comics. (They also use the color yellow a lot)
#5) Fantastic Four? Who the heck are they?
#6) While I concur that George Klein is very likely and most probably the mysterious inker for the first two issues of the Fantastic Four, but just to be totally silly, I think Paul Reinman did the lettering.
Truthfully, many many years ago, I use to think Paul inked this cover, and I still wonder about it at times. If not him I would tend to lean toward George Klein and/or the Christopher Rule connection, rather than Dick Ayers. I have a hard time making a lot of the brush work Dick's. But I could be wrong. Especially if someone knows that Dick's records point to this cover as his. But this is also a very clumsy cover. Probably very rushed.
#7) My prime Marvel comics are 1965-1969, and if you pick one I don't have (like this one), then all bets are off. (Oh wait, I shouldn't have told you that - we'll never see another Marvel Comic from the last half of the sixties again).

DC Special #15: Plastic Man. Cover by Giordano (after Cole & Kane).
Ah, how well I remember this one! I was visiting my sister in Texas, and my brother-in-law volunteered to drive me to a store to buy a couple of comic books to keep me occupied. Along the way, he began talking about the comics he'd read as a child in the early 50's, and he especially liked Plastic Man. I got to show off my 12-year-old comics history knowledge by explaining to him that "they don't publish Plastic Man any more." And danged if we didn't find this DC Special on the spinner rack, where it had been sitting for probably 9 months or so! Very embarassing!

So the second FF cover got me to thinking about this second cover. Also by Kirby, with inking credits given to Sol Brodsky, who ironically enough is also part of the short list for being the mystery inker on the first two FFs.

With this Avengers comic, I am really favoring Paul doing the inking. Not just because he inks the interior of this issue and the next, but because it really looks like his work, in brush work, spotting blacks, and defining muscle mass over Kirby pencils.
And on a different (and really trivial) subject, how come Marvel likes the color yellow for second issues of group comics?

Isn't that FF 2 cover odd in the way that there is a large blank area in the upper middle?
It wouldn't be long before such an expanse would be filled with more of Stan's cover blurbs.
But the best they could do was stick the month and issue number in the middle of that emptiness.

.
No voice in my head on this one. I thought the first clue was drawn by Graham Ingels or Frazetta. I looked at the EC covers and thought I had found it on Haunt of Fear 23. Close but no cigar. And not a Thun'da cover either.
The second clue with the leopard tail made me pretty sure it was a jungle comic, probably with a pretty girl on the cover so I did a search for "Jungle" on the GCD and started looking at the most likely candidates first. Got lucky in that I ran across the Nyoka one pretty early on before my life force was totally drained.
Interesting, that GCD does not know who drew it. After seeing the whole cover, I think most of the vegetation was swiped from Hogarth's Tarzan and or Raymond's Jungle Jim. The drawing of the girl herself is just average IMO.
For a real thrill, check out the cover of Thun'da #1.

Most gracious of you. It looked like a Timely/Atlas "N" and so I dug through the names of titles on the GCD to find ones with a word ending in "N". There were several I had to check before BA popped up. Then it was a matter of matching the color scheme. It was only after I'd first posted that I went back to the GCD just to look at other covers from the series that I saw the other candidate.

A great great comic book. Really cool cover. Some of Kirby's best Captain America comics. I loved these Syd Shore inked classics.

... JB the IB - who has got his 60s Marvel groove back.
Well at least until the next time.
The main helper was the second clue and the blue tinging everywhere. At first I was thinking Don Heck inking on Kirby and that set in motion all the early Journey Into Mystery with the Mighty Thor comics. But I couldn't get the tinging to match up. Then I realized it was Syd Shores brushwork and <whammo> this cover leapt into the visual synapses of my still pea-sized cranial cavities.
We were a spoiled lot in 1968. Kirby classics galore. Did I mention this is one of my favorite Captain America comics? Did I? Huh? Did I?

That makes sense that it is Syd Shores, as to my eyes, the Red Skull looks a lot more like the Red Skull of the 40s, than the one re-introduced in the 60s.

I thought this would take a while to guess, although it is a gorgeous Nick Cardy cover. Gangbusters tends to be off most people's radar screen. That's a shame, because it's a decent title with lots of great work - this one features art by Moreira, Swan and Cary. Not a bad lineup.

Thanks! The coloring, lettering and even that creamy white background made me think DC. Ten cents plus the words themselves suggested spies, cops, etc, and therefore the fifties. I thought of Mr. District Attorney first, and even checked Danger Trail, then thought of Gangbusters. Checked it out on Mike's Amazing World site.
Everybody should check out the covers for those titles: what a bunch of beauties! (Check out Danger Trail #2, for example...)

Who's Cary? I've never heard of him.
Edit: Oh, a spelling mistake for Cardy!
While I'm back here, I was looking at that cover and seeing how like or unlike the Cardy I know from the late silver age on it was and drawing a blank... until I looked at the face of the man standing next to the one in the check jacket.

re: Kirby and Shores, I recently read an interesting tidbit of information. When Martin Goodman started publishing comics, he got all the contents from the Funnies Inc. shop. Then he hired Joe Simon as editor, and Simon convinced Goodman to hire an in-house art staff. The first artist Simon hired was Jack Kirby, who he'd worked with on Blue Bolt and a couple of other things. The second artist hired was Syd Shores. Having Kirby and Shores working together again in the late 60s was a real connection to the earliest roots of Marvel.

Me, neither...and now I'm really curious about that title. Obviously, from cover inspection, it switched to being a shameless Archie imitation in the second half of its publication, but I wonder if the initial conceit was dropped? Was Scooter still an English rock 'n' roll star for that latter part of the run or just another teen American?
One other thing that interests me about the run is that it only had four 25 cent issues; it appears to be something of an anomoly; DC's line was "48 pages", half reprint...but here Scooter crops up advertising "All New 64 pages"? After apparently being cancelled for a few months when the 25 cent era began...

I've got SWS #20 which is a Giant Summer Fun issue. Scooter does not have a British accent and doesn't appear to be in a band or anything. The stories are very Archie-esque. He has a love/hate relationship with a girl named Cookie.
The art on some of the stories is strange looking. They appear to be older stories from a different title drawn by Oksner and Drucker. But the heads of the main characters seem to be drawn by Scarpelli and pasted onto the old art.
I know DC did this with Dobie Gillis stories that they reused as Wendy and Willy.
I don't know where these Oksner and Drucker stories came from originally.

The GCD seems unaware of Messrs Standard Publications.
Bah! Humbug!
Lone Ranger:
This Standard?
That'd be the one, yes. Last night the GCD was telling me that there was one that'd published several Dennis the Menace titles but nothing else. I was obviously doing something wrong somewhere...
If I'd remembered 'Better' I might've looked there, but as it was I didn't even get round to Nedor or Pines.
Despite all this, it was good to see that Sekowsky cover in all its glory at last.

What the heck?
What is going one with you people these days? I thought this was obscure enought that people would spend most of their time looking through Warren and Charlton books.
I'm sticking to Better/Standard books for a while.

Maybe it's just me, but this Hulk cover was memorable enough that I went right to it after seeing the first clue. I remember really liking it at the time.

I'm surprised how cartoony the Hulk looks for a "realistic" painted cover.

The art sure looks like a Quality comic to me.
I checked out the usual suspects, especially Doll Man. Now wouldn't you think there would be at least one cover featuring Doll Man's girlfriend shrunk down to his size and held captive by an evil old guy with bozo hair?
I checked all the Doll Man and Feature Comics covers and no luck.
I still say this comic was published by Quality tho.

Sorry Kimo, DD you can and have snuck past me, even an X-men or Strange Tales, but usually a Marvelous Marvel Masterpiece from my first year of comical collecting is going to send radar, spider and standard intiution sensors into overdrive...
Especially when it is an Amazing Spider-man comic.
Especially one of my all time favorite Spideys, favortie issues, favorite covers, favorite splash pages, and favorite Gwen and MJ drawn issues.

Yes - it does looked quite good, but there are a couple of drawbacks:
1. For those with slow connections, it may take longer for page to load.
2. I can't keep track of how many times a clue has been viewed. I used to wait for 10+ views before posting a new clue - now I will have to base it more on time.
It does look pretty darned cool, though.

My GUI design engineering skills are vibrating.
#1) The load time for slow connects is a legitimate concern.
#2) All that wasted real estate with the attached image grouping boundary
#3) Given #2, It negates attaching an image - just use the insert image instead.
#4) It increases the load on the already overtaxed CBR server. It's serving up a LOT more data.
#5) As kimo noted, a useful feedback feature is lost.
I like the idea of seeing attached imaged with the page load, if I want to bear the burden of the load time. However see #4.
I would prefer this option of "see-images" versus "click to see attached images" being a user choice rather than a forced viewing option. More flexible, more user friendly, kinder to slow connect clients, and eases what the server has to move across its lines.
just my opinions and thoughts, and I tend to prefer giving control to the user.

Have you tried going into User CP and then Edit Options and try setting your deafault to '5 posts per page' or something like that?
That should at least minimize the number of pics per page.

It not only may, but for me it definitely takes longer. Much longer.
There is a UserCP->option for turning off all images, inserted or attached. So you can get the text pages to load quickly. But it's global to both types of images. The hyper-links are there, so you can individually choose which images you want to view.
However, the counter is still gone for attached images no matter which way you go.
Turning that off should make reading my comic reviews faster, because I do like to insert the images for visual impact. I like the effect of words and images intermingling. I do lower the jpg image quality, to decreae file sizes as much as possible and still have satisfactory image quality.
The recent cover parodies needed fairly large size images so the text could be read, especially by silver-haired silver-agers like me.
In the future, I will put some extra thought in attaching rather than inserting images, depending on which way the powers that be decide to control image display options.

Just arrived a minute too late! Congratulations, MDG! Considering how far this one went, I assume many other participants were tripped up by the hints like I was. Finally I went down the Adams checklist and asked myself of each one: "Did this series start as 'mostly reprints'?" And as I was trying to remember if Superman Family made it into the 80's, the light finally came on--Superman #1 reprinted Superman stories from Action Comics...
Clever hint-dropping, indeed!

I am always trying to come up with new hints that don't give things away too quickly.
I thought this one might send people in the wrong direction for a little while.
I believe that Superman #4 was the first issue that did not contain mainly reprints from either Action Comics or the newspaper strip.

^ I was peeking at those for awhile also. But the second clue, about a slight title change in the 80s had me jettisoning them. I can't think of any Marvel horror-related titles that survived the 70s. Especially if they started out as reprint vehicles (Dwellers, Roamers, Fear-fulls, et. all...)
So I was peering at DC's odd arrangement of super-size, special, star, limited edition comics, trying to piece together a numbering trail from them.
While digesting title changers in the 80s, I did think about the Superman title, but I totally forgot the early issues od Supes were reprint heavy, and discarded it as a candidate.
Based on the visuals, the first clue had me thinking it might be Steve Ditko's work due to the clothing styles. By the third visual, I was thinking a Neal Adams wanna-be.
Excellent clue-hint diversioning there kimo.
