Bill - when someone solves a cover in one clue (and less than 15 minutes to boot), I expect some sort of an explanation.
That one's pretty simple, actually. I recognized the art style as Jim Aparo (knowing you are a fan of J.A.'s probably helped me recognize it so quickly), so I went looking in the GCD. I started with Brave and the Bold, but at the same time, I had the GCD look for anything pencilled by Aparo, and whenever I'd hit on a cover, I'd hit the gallery for series. I was only about 4 series in (so... probably 5 pages of Aparo credits in) when I hit Batman Family.
If I hadn't picked up on Aparo, I wouldn't have even started looking.

I am finding his style to be harder and harder to disguise.
Good for you for sticking with your instincts until coming upon Batman Family.

I think that is good. I think the points have been spread out pretty evenly which means no one person is dominating.
BTW, does anyone know the largest size computer monitor that is commercially available? I'm tired of squinting at thumbnails.
ROK - are you saying that my clues come up really small, or does it have to do with GCD etc...?
I try to make them a decent size without harming resolution too much - I know the first clue is normally quite small - but we've had plenty of one clue answers.
Thanks for the support on the newer covers too - following Sir Tim's rules for the Board, I am trying to consider anything older than two years to be fair game.

Mike is correct. I was complaining about the thumbnails at GCD etc. I mean I can't blame it on my old age.
A storm knock out the power to my neighborhood for 13 hours last night and then when it came back on, my wireless mouse wouldn't work.

All I saw is what's up there now. Doesn't look like DC or Marvel.
Speaking of Marvel, where has InfoBroker gone to? He probably would have nailed that Two-Gun Kid comic.
As mentioned, I spend a week or two in July hanging with my cousins from Spain in central Illinois. We had a great time, as always, biking, exploring historical sites, reading comics, and this year we watched the Fantastic Four movie together. I enjoyed the movie far more than I expected to, and I spent time with my Cousin Nickie reading the classic Confessor story from Astro City Comics. I also bought him a couple of Essential Fantastic Four books, and two Mark Waid Flash trades. He's busy creating his own line of Super-heroes now, and I am missing him and the rest of his family to the extremes.
But I'm back now, and it is questionable how well I might have done on Two-Gun Kid. Kimo knows I don't have a solid run of Marvel Western comics pre-1966. So of course he dips into that box heavily. <big grin>

I don't know if LR did it on purpose, but I knew that word was "Winter" so I was only looking at very early comics that were published quarterly. I quit looking once the title went monthly or bi-monthly.

I knew the cover from one of those wonderful little Apple Press books collecting DC comic book covers--two volumes of Action, two volumes of Detective, and one volume (the only one that is not exhaustive) of Wonder Woman. When I was looking the cover up for confirmation, I couldn't believe it was so late in the run! It's so primitive...and oddball...has Scott Shaw! ever done this one in his column?

Thanks for the words of comfort MK, my ego needs a boost this morning.
With the second clue, I was thinking John Romita, or else Marie Severin. But John only did a couple issues of Astonish and Suspense before moving on to Spidey, and while I looked just to be sure, I couldn't make it fit.
The coloring screamed Marvel, and I was placing it in the 1966-69 timeframe based on that alone. So why I went off looking at 1960-65 Suspense, Astonish, and Strange Tales was a sign of my panicy condition last night.
I also tried Tower of Shadows and Chamber of Darkness, but Marie didn't do any covers there until 1970.
It makes you realize that most of Marvel's titles have had name changes over the years. Even X-men (and yes, I checked those too. Especially the 20-30s range when Warner Roth was doing the covers).

This is an obscure book for sure - picked it up on eBay not too long ago (couldn't pass up on this cover). BB also makes an appearance in Master Comics #133. The GCD says it's his first appearance, but this series predates that issue.

I empathize, Mike. When I saw "Jim Aparo, R.I.P." I felt ill in the pit of my stomach. But it is good to see Jim getting his due. This morning my mother asked me if I was aware a Batman artist had died. (She couldn't remember his name.) I said, "Jim Aparo?" She had heard it on the radio, both locally and on the CBS feed. As big a fan as I am of Aparo's work I was surprised his death made the national news so quickly.

The fact that LR says that it lasted less than 25 issues suggests that it may not have been that successful at the time .As that looks like an axe head and after a trawl through DC Sword and Sorcery titles with no actual joy I'll throw in a wild card guess at Ghost Castle 3.

I knew you still had it in you!
Reconstructive surgery does wonders.
Here's how I narrowed it down.
#1) The colors screamed Marvel.
#2) The amount of storage dirt on the white spots was meticulously compared to my crimelab collection of comic cover aging swatches and that pinpointed the years to 1968-69. (OK, I'm exxagerating things here, but my excessive imagination needs to be released once in awhile).
#3) Your clue really helped narrow the possible titles down and the first place I went was Captain Savage. Maybe that goggle of Baron Strucker's I thought glancing at the thumbnail of issue #4.
Nope! No go.
#4) So a reexamination of the shine-lines suggested Herb Trimpe or Marie Severin. At this point I thought you were giving me a straight-line, so I could proclaim "Well wadda know another Mighty Marble Masterpiece comical book." like I did jokingly earlier.
So off to Not Brand Echh! I scurried.
I thought for sure one of the Blunder Agents weilded an ax or two, but again dead-end.
#5) A quick mental scan of Marvel Comics of that time frame sent the mind a whirl. For awhile I feared that it might be an early 70s horror title, and a LOT of those had Marie's work. Fortunately a sane voice reminded me that Shield was cancelled after 15 issues, and Herb Trimpe was doing the final issues.
And with that, success was at hand.
I will be talking a pledge of silence for the remaining covers that get us to number 50. Since I am ineligible for a JK award, I want to open things up a bit for others. I might nudge an extra clue in if I think it will help (or hinder- ya never know with me) others guesses.
But it's nice to know my Marvel Silver-Age prowess hasn't been permanently damaged by that wicked Wally Wood Daredevil cover. <whew!>

The jungle trees and the Filipino linework first made me think of Rima, but then I remembered those had Kubert covers, not Redondo. Then that color reminded me of a Swamp Thing cover, and hey, wasn't that the chest of the somewhat more humanoid Swampy of the Redondo days up in the left corner of the clue? Well, no it wasn't, it was jaw of a dinosaur, but it was enough to convince me that this was one of those Swamp Thing covers, and it took but seconds to confirm that.
(Seems to me Wrightson managed to stage his panels so that Swampy never looked quite as naked as he actually was; Redondo gives us a little too much swamp butt here for my tastes!)

I went through the early issues of both Tales of Suspense and Tales to Astonish before starting on Strange Tales. If that hadn't worked, I'ld've gone onto Journey into Mystery. Because from hint 2 this Kirby cover could only be one of those four - unless you were counting (Tales of the) Unexpected as a title change, and I'm not even sure that Kirby did any covers for that title.

Two obvious Kirby covers in a row? And both from the same period? I sense an attempt at a devious form of bluff or even smokescreen here.
At any rate, having recognised the King's architectural style and the period, I thought 'supervillain' and then, for some reason, Thor, so zipped off to the GCD to Journey Into Mystery - aided by the three uses of the title hint (which, I've just remembered, would also apply to Tales to Astonish).

re: third clue - worked for Marvel and Tower
In no particular order these are the ones that immediately pop into my mind:
Wally Wood, Dan Adkins, Steve Ditko, Gil Kane, Ogden Whitney, Chic Stone, George Tuska, Reed Crandell, Frank Giacoia, Mike Esposito, Dick Ayers, John Guinta, Paul Reinman.
Those who worked at Tower but not Marvel are a bit more of mind teaser, but these two pop into mind
Manny Stallman (Raven), and Mike Sekowsky (at least I don't think Mike worked at Marvel, unless maybe Roy pulled him in for some Invaders or something).

George Tuska has been a fixture in the comic book industry, producing a wonderful mixture of material on a wide range of genre.
For this cover, I was pretty sure it was his work with the inking on the cape and the line quality of the hands. The Tower hint cinched it for me. It is a beautiful cover kimo. Nice find.
I think this was also a per-metldown classic cover, but likeVampire Tales (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showpost.php?p=1674029&postcount=6) my memory may be misfiring.
I wish there was more of George's work from the 40s and 50s availible in reasonably priced and packaged formats.

Winners (the top five scores), as metioned will be receiving copies of Tor #1 and Eternals #1 from the 1970s. The only caveat, also as mentioned, is that you must cover the postage costs. For most of you that should be right around four bucks for USPS priority shipping.
If you wish to decline the award, now would be a good time to tell me. Please use the email button for contact. My Private Mail folder is probably near full again (still) and I don't have time to clear it at the moment.

OK - this may not look pretty with CBR formatting (not too table friendly), but all of the info is here for the first 50 covers.
A wide array of covers and winners. I though looking at genre would be interesting, as it shows my superhero bias, but some other stuff snuck in there. Wasn't sure where to put things like Nick Fury (I went super-hero because I didn't want to create an Espionage category). I ended up putting Tarzan in 'JU - jungle' and Zorro in TV, although they could be in other categories. Anyhow take a look - it's pretty interesting to see.

Well, ain't that a corker? I had the feeling I was doing better this round, but I didn't expect to end up on top!
Allow me to express appreciation for our host, Lone Ranger, and our award facilitator, Infobroker, and our fill-in host, RedOakKid, and all the other players. We're all winners here, we truly, truly are. We've seen wonderful artwork that was new to us, we've found so many gems in our searches for the unknown, we've honed our senses to such surprising degrees that a mere patch of a given color triggers hunches as to publisher, genre, and date. We've trained ourselves to better identify artists based on sometimes nothing more than tiny squiggles, we've enlightened one another, we've corrected one another, we've reminded one another.
And so, in accepting this award, I'd like to thank my parents, who only very rarely disparaged my comic hobby, my wife Dana, who puts up with more pulp bulk than she ever expected to, my friend Ruth Ann, and my comic book idol, the wonderful and talented Jim Aparo.
Happy Katemas, all!

I'd never studied the Captain Savage covers and I don't think I've read any of the series, but I was amused by how jovial he looked in the cameo cover box, smiling and giving the "OK" gesture. He certainly didn't appear to be having such a good time on any of the cover action shots!
Looking further, I see that this cameo shot of the Captain evolves: after a few issues, he doffs his cap. Then, he finally adheres to regulation and shaves off the facial hair (courtesy of, to my squinting eyes, Happy Herbie Trimpe).

Swan was my guess, based on the Superman figure, especially the head. But that Batman sure doesn't look like anything Swan would have come up with by himself. I'm with those that say Infantino did the layout.
