Nice job Michi - 100 points for you.
Black Cat made her debut in Pocket Comics in 1941 or thereabouts. This title was also a horror book as well as a western themed book.
I love the Black Cat - great look, great character and some fine artists have contributed to her stories.
These early 60s books are very interesting - the folks at Harvey were obviously looking cash in on the superhero craze. The revamped title only lasted 3 issues, so I guess kids weren't all that thrilled about paying 25 cents for reprints at the time.

Now I'm beginning to doubt your British heritage there T GUy, everyone knows that Iron Man began in the Weekly Comic Book Boy's World and continued in Eagle Weekly Comics when the two comics merged in 1964.
This website (http://www.eaglecomic.com/) has some background information on Eagle, along with several nice web pages devoted to Dan Dare.
I click on the artists section and got a wonderful rundown on the various people who worked on the DD strip. I didn't realize that Frank Bellamy had died in 1976. I first became aware of his work at Gerry Anderson's TV 21st Century Comics, and later the Garth comic strip. Now there is an under-appreciated comics artist.

I was thinking Grell, too - an issue of Warlord. Unfortunately, the cover I had in mind featured a redhead (who's name escapes me at the moment. I'm pretty sure she was a Russian archaeologist who had been engaged to the werewolf-like guy, but ended up with Machiste).
The colouring, at least in the detail, does look a lot like Julia Lacquerment (sp?), who worked with Grell on most of Jon Sable, and then followed him to Green Arrow (both the Longbow Hunters & the ongoing).

Good call on the coloring. I also thought that was blond hair, or some brasero that was part of the background.
It might also have been a Grell Green Arrow cover, what with Ollie's pants sometimes being yellow and all...
I still can't believe it wasn't Grell! It's like my own Bizarro trip to Damascus!

This was indeed an odd item. I'm pretty sure that DC was not publishing other digests in 1972. I don't even remember where I bought my copy.
This is speculation, but I wonder if the Burroughs estate pushed DC to do this? I've read that the estate tried to exert a lot of influence over the comics. Maybe they wanted to try making some extra money from all the Manning material that they already owned.

Was DC publishing any other digest-sized books back then? Here's some info from the indispensable "Mike's Amazing World of DC Comics":
The first (and only) early DC Digest was Tarzan Comic Digest #1 published in 1972. It contained 96 pages for 50¢ at a smaller size. DC had just acquired the publishing rights to Tarzan comics and was trying to find a new niche. For unspecified reasons, the Tarzan Comic Digest would be the only one of its kind. A second digest starring Laurel and Hardy was announced at the same time, but it never appeared. A standard size Laurel and Hardy one-shot was published that year.
The Digest-Size experiment was shelved for nearly 8 years until after the DC Implosion. In 1979, DC sought to recapture lost market share by placing their comics in the super-market checkout line. To do so required a smaller physical size, the "Digest".

My reaction was the same. No later than 1965, I thought. Which did me in. When LR said the cover artist was still living Nick Cardy was one of my first thoughts. Why I never pursued Aquaman I'll never know.

To answer you question.... it all depends.
The quality could indeed vary, and Eerie went with more of a sci-fi theme moreso than Creepy, with some ongoing features - such as The Rook, featured on this cover.

True, but there were patches where the difference between the best and worst stories in an issue was enormous. Also, re-reading some 60s issues, I was surprised at how freqeuntly--and how soon--they reprinted stories.
Some 70s stories got pretty sleazy--on the other hand, Wrightson, Corben, Toth, Severin, Wood, etc.

IIRC, he's basically just a modern day (70s) time traveller. I think all of the stories I read took place on Earth. The old guy is an ancestor he pick up from the Alamo. He's got a sidekick robot, not unlike C3P0.

Working on the possibility that the coloring is off, I'll place a guess on Batman #321.
I considered that one early on -- we've actually had that one already -- but couldn't get the green parts to fit.

so it is, so it is - I started with the last issue of Challs and worked backwards - didn't get to that issue! I'm just pleased I was on the right title
it is 51.
ROK - please give Mike the points in the next 40 minutes so we can get another cover going before I leave work for the day, I'm enjoying myself!

No, no. I'm sure you knew the correct issue and just mistyped. Those are your points, Graham.
Graham Vingoe
09-04-2006, 09:13 AM
No Mike, I can honestly say that issue 77 was a complete guess based purely on ROK's first clue, and a vague suspicion I had that he'd immediately follow DC cover with another- Challs happened to be the first Kirby title I could think of which vaguely fit the clue and was DC. (incidentally, I have never read a single issue of the title apart from the Loeb/Sale version a few years back, so there is no way I could have known it)
I didn't see the correct cover until after you very politely pointed me 26 issues earlier.
You saw the correct cover first, so they should be your points.

Don't you people know how to play this game correctly? That first clue is supposed to make you start looking at Marvel monster books. COTU is NOT supposed to be the first book you think of.
I'm going to give the 400 points to Graham V. because he was the first to give the correct number with help from Mike K.

It reminds me stylistically of Gil Kane... but also of his cover for War Is Hell No. 10 (the first cover I thought of when I saw the first clew... featuring the skull, which is the least Kanesque piece of this cover), from Dec., 1974 - over a year after this Billy the Kid cover.
Having checked out the GCD, the two covers are only alike in the vaguest of ways... apart from the Kane influence on the BtK.

I've forgotten about hearing of the Racoon Kids, if, indeed, I've ever heard of 'em. I'ld've started with the Fox and the Crow.

Graham Thanks for saving me the time and effort. I've forgotten about hearing of the Racoon Kids, if, indeed, I've ever heard of 'em. I'ld've started with the Fox and the Crow.Doggone it, I knew this was a DC funny animal, but I looked fruitlessly through the HOLLYWOOD FUNNY FOLKS and MOVIE TOWN ANIMAL ANTICS covers. Little did I know that MOVIE TOWN ANIMAL ANTICS became RACCOON KIDS with issue #52. At least I was on the right track.

what really bugged me about this cover was the fact that I immediately thought it has got to be Fox and the Crow , went through all their covers THEN realised that Fox has a white tip on the tail!
then it was just wild, random luck from there.

I didn't search, but using Mike's Amazing World over the GCD was definitely the way to go in a case like this. It's the easiest way to see what funny animal titles DC had. (Only a Golden Age fanatic would know these titles off the top of his head.) This method works well when looking for a Golden Age or Atomic Age DC in general. It has helped me many times.

Nice going GV. 300 pts for you.
I found this title by accident a while ago and made a mental note to save it for the GTCC. I'd never heard of it before. And I don't recognize the creators on this strip either.
I should have made the second hint be something like: This title continued the numbering from another title. But I didn't have the heart to make you guys search thru Dell covers all day.
But I'm glad it generated a good discussion from everyone.
