Marvel comics super special #3,
adapting Close encounters of the third kind.
It had that unmistakingly not-quite super-heroic Marvel '70s look, but after a quick check wasn't a Marvel preview cover, so...

"...having recognized Teri Garr's butt..."
No, not Teri Garr's butt. Melinda Dillon's.
If you will recall, Teri Garr played Roy Neary's long-suffering wife Ronnie in the 1977 movie. She did not get "the call" to meet at Devil's Tower. That was Gillian Guiler, played by actress Melinda Dillon. It was she who made it to the alien landing site with Roy Neary. The pictured butt is therefore hers, not Teri Garr's. Sorry to burst your butt bubble.

That's good advice. Marvel and DC comics from the '60s are what I like best, but I have solved all sorts of covers from playing the game as long as I have. The written clues help a lot too.
By the way, when LR says, "It's not a Big Two book," it's his way of saying "not published by Marvel or DC."

Nice going Mike.
I was thinking Marvel. And it did have kind of a M. Severin feel to it. But I was thinking it was something like Monsters on the Prowl which had some M. Severin covers based on the original Lee/Kirby monster books.
You must have remembered buying this issue of DD.
And don't tell me you bought it from a comic book vending machine because THERE NEVER WAS ANY SUCH OF A THING.
Mike Kuypers

Not exactly. I do have the comic, but I searched through a few other titles before I found it. I felt it was a Marvel superhero title. But I started looking at Sub-Mariner first, then Iron Man, Hulk and a couple of others. DD seemed unlikely, but the title did begin in the '60s.
As for comic book vending machines (yes, Virginia, they did exist), I didn't buy very many comics that way. I always hit Wyon Drugstore on Tuesdays when the new comics came in. Sometimes I was there before they were even unbundled and put in the spinner racks. By contrast the vending machines weren't updated all that often, and you were limited to the comics showing on top of the stacks. If you had the comics that were showing, or they were titles you didn't buy, you were stymied. I think that was part of the reason the vending machines didn't catch on.

I noticed that this is one of those Marie Severin/Bill Everett collaborations signed with the distinctive E7V logo. Does anyone know how many of these cover collaborations there were between M. Severin and B. Everett? I do remember seeing this logo on many, many comics during that time (early '70s).

Way to go, RM!
Thanks.
My first clue, was really a non-clue. He never said it wasn't a big two book. So, I started looking through Marvel 10 cent books... detective style books that would've ended in the 50's. So I was on the right path...
But then the titles having the same first name, that gave it away since Marvel (in its earlier creations) had so many titles with TALES...
So then it was a quick shot over to a comic book database... and thats where I saw that Tales of Justice was canceled in 1957.
But alas, here at work, I couldnt access several of the websites that had picture... but after some deduction work and a few ebay checks, I actually found a site that allowed me to view the images... and I worked my way from the first one... to the last, and there it was on the last one...
Great titles on that one too.... awesome cover.

Amen! The inking was so criminal that the inker himself used a pseudonym, at least on his first issue. And "ill-conceived" indeed--I've long considered that line-up to be one of the most visually-awkward assemblies imaginable: a geezer in tophat and tails, a guy that has to take off his gloves to use his powers, a guy wearing loops of fabric seemingly designed to snag on any and everything, a tiny guy to get lost in the scenery, a guy with a 2 ft long sash conveniently hanging off his head, and only two of the entire team could fly, so scenes of them all heading into action usually involved several characters dangling from the arms of the others! Man, oh, man, this team just looked embarrassingly clumsy!
None of which stopped this usually-discriminating young fan from buying the blasted thing...

It doesn't bother me at all, I often find these excursions as enjoyable as trying to solve the covers myself. With reference to the Freedom Fighters in particular, I find myself in the position of agreeing with you. The 3 or 4 issues of Freedom Fighters I own are nowhere near the greatest comics of all time* yet there's something about the team that makes me like them, even though the characters are very much c-list at best.

No objection whatsoever. I often find the discussions here more interesting than in other threads on this board. Also, I think we tend to joke around a bit more.

I certainly really enjoy the flow of conversations here and would certainly never discourage it.
I started this game because I was bored one day, and it has certainly grown into a bit of a (loveable) monster. I really like hearing other people's thoughts on particular comics - whether it's the book itself or any personal tales about owning a book etc...
I agree that most of that doesn't really justify separate threads - so I am glad we can all chat in here about various things.
I am actually just really happy that the game and the covers inspire conversation - that's pretty cool.

That's supposed to be a picture of Rod imitating a gorilla - something he was known for doing at parties. Perhaps after smoking a "funny" cigarette or two; perhaps not.

I actually bought it when it originally came out - I was a huge Perez fan back then. I thought the arc had an interesting premise, and the first 'chapter' was pretty strong, but it got weaker the further you got into it. Of course... having 'chapter 2' be guest-pencilled (?) by Bob Layton (I think it was Layton), and having a slew of inkers on this (including 1 issue which I think had something like 4 inkers attached) didn't really help it any - especially since this was an inventory story. Though it did have some nice examples of how Perez's covers had evolved (issue 1 was a new cover, IIRC, and 2 & 3 were done back when the pages were pencilled) - and the 4th issue does sport one of Art Adams earliest efforts (a funny aside here - I'm pretty sure Marvel got flack for that cover, too. Apparantly, some people felt that Art shouldn't be allowed to sign his work 'Adams', 'cause some people might think it was Neil - despite the fact that it obviously wasn't. In fact, I think at least one of the complainers even aknowledged that.. but still complained).

I've got it.
It's the cover for the one-shot issue of Ethel the Aardvark Goes Quantity Surveying.
Only five copies were ever printed off of it, off a makeshift bathtub home printing press in a tin shack in extreme southern Tasmania.
The writer and printer was a web-toed schizophrenic who, after printing the five copies, buried them in various unmarked locations in the Tasmanian jungles. He then covered his entire nude body with boar's blood and ran off into the sea, giggling to himself like a maniac, where he was pulled to shreds by Great White sharks.
Congratulations on finding this very rare issue. Now if you can only drop it into the mouth of a live volcano, my Uncle Bruce's tortured spirit can finally rest in peace.

I hit Adventure, Justice League, Superman, Action, DC Comics Presents... forgot all about World's Finest, though. I'm pretty impressed people recognized Adams from that - I was figuring on Giordano, but I thought the penciller was likely Ross Andru or Garcia Lopez for some reason.
My first guess was Jimmy Olsen 147.
Then I looked at every early 70s DC but WF was last.
You guys aren't going to believe this, but I didn't even realize this was by Adams.

Well, here we are at the 400th cover once again - it doesn't seem all that long ago that we rebooted after the last 400 covers.
I think I am going to keep going to 500 this time around. It's a nice, round number.

I was actually pretty gunshy about using this one, knowning you'd get it quickly.
I guess those backgrounds don't really scream Adams as much as the principal characters.

Maybe it's not his ass. Maybe it's his pectoral, right shoulder, and upper arm.
But then again, I have a hard time figuring out what that diagonal object is. If it's not a shoulder holster, it's a hip holster, and it is, indeed, his ass.

Its gotta be his rump... and it looks more like a daggers sheath to me.... hence the bubbles on the left. Hes underwater...
that gives me an idea..

No, that's not true. I wish I could say I was clever enough to figure you would commemorate the 400th cover with a #400 issue, but that's not true either. I guessed the outfit belonged to an astronaut ('50s style). And I just happened to remember there were some nice painted space covers in the Four Color series (having searched there a few times in the course of this game). Which only goes to prove if you play this game long enough even the fruitless searches pay off eventually.
Is this cool comic yours, LR?

I was trying to find a 400th issue - and not many series have made it that far.
There sure are a lots of great books in that 4 Color series.

I have a feeling Im going to be kicking myself after this one comes out. Im fresh out of ideas!
EDIT:
Yep! I am kicking myself. I knew that DC cut all/most of their war story comics in the 80's, however a quick look at comics-db.com showed that none of SGT ROCK, GI COMBAT nor The Unkown SOlider ever were printed everywhere else...
BUT then I found an image of GI COMBAT by Quality, and was in the midst of looking through these.
Good one!

Thank you, Bill. Yeah, I got its Kubertosity from the first clew, but spent some time looking at late Kamandi covers... my instincts were on the right timeframe there, howe'er. It was the combination of the last two hints that led me to G. I. Combat even before looking at the clue. The difference of five hours in T Time and Lone Ranger Time meant that when he posted the second clew I was busy attempting to decipher notes taken during a meeting supposedly concerning the construction of a School but which seemed to involve a pair of goth girls deciding which make-up to wear.

Funny how this made us all think Spiderman. My first reaction was to look at Romita Spiderman covers. I got to ish 50 before my puter froze up. Gotta get a Mac.
The big hair made me think of Patsy and Heddy, but I don't think the King contributed to that title.
But I think it is definitely an early 60s Marvel.

I saw where you said you checked the ASM covers through #50. Kind of crazy that it was staring you right in the face (and me too, as I missed the first time I looked through ASM). Sometimes the color varies between Scott's scans and the ones at GCD, so it doesn't register that I'm looking at the right cover.

You have to understand how unbelievably entertaining (in a sadistic sort of way) I the discussion re. this cover.
I actually cropped this hoping that people might think it was a hairdo - I was just so glad my intended trick actually worked!
You know - when you look back at old Kraven's outfit - it isn't exactly the manliest costume.

In this case, it wasn't the colors that thru me off. The way it was cropped, it looked like the most delicate, feminine, and dainty of female shoulders I have ever seen.
Don't tell Kraven I said that.

Because the other person said they looked through all the Spider Mans, I of course didn't! I did the AVENGERS, CAPTAIN AMERICA, Tales of SUSPENSE, anything that Kirby and Lee worked on...

Once upon a time - I only used my own covers, but I felt like I was missing some interesting material so I tried finding good online sources.
Nowadays, I'd still say that 9 out of every 10 covers are from my collection (that's probably why you see more 70s Charlton Horror than Timely Captain America:p ).
Those I don't own, I take from another site - rather not mention it so as not to give anyone extra help in answering questions. It is not the GCD, though - as the scans there are not very high quality - so they are fuzzy when you blow them up in order to crop a piece.
