I eliminated House of Mystery, House of Secrets, Unexpected, Ghosts, and Sinister something-or-other. Not being a fan of DC horror comics I've probably missed a title or three.

Well, I have no excuse for not getting this one. I liked Night Force.
Bill Angus
04-06-2006, 04:04 PM
Huh. I actually avoided looking at Night Force because it seemed too obvious a choice...
Those inks really didn't make me think of Colan at all (though, if you'd showed the leg from the forground, I might of had a different reaction).
Was Smith a protege of Dick Giordano? I've never noticed a similarity in their style before, but it sure shows (at least to me) in this one.

300 points for MWG. Nice going.
Apparently Mike K. is still dazed from the Fear 27 debacle.
I don't know if Bob Smith did any work with Giordano. Even when you see the whole cover, nothing really screams Colan.
I have all these NF issues, but I haven't read them yet.

400 points for Spoon.
On the one hand, I thought the Legion cover would be extremely tough for the average comics fan, but I also figured there were some diehard Legion fans who would have no trouble recognizing it. I figured it would either go quickly or take four clues.
I keep meaning to do some research on the Charlie Chan cover. It seems to be mainly Kirby, but I don't know if he finished it. I wonder if Charlton inherited some unfinished Simon and Kirby stuff from the Prize CC run. I also wonder if Charlton's infamous color separation problems is why this scan looks so weird.

First of all, I would like to extend a Texas sized 'Thank You' to ROK for his great over the last week.
I've said in an a PM, but I'd like to make a public pronouncement of how great it is to have someone like Mac come in to do the dirty work when I am sipping beer in the sun.
I went through his covers trying to solve them, and had a pretty tough time -even on the Gold Key Lone Ranger, which is an original painting and not a reprint from the original Dell run.

Iron Corporal #23 Charlton
Michi
Nice job Michi - 200 points for you.
Iron Corporal was the creation of Sam Glanzman, and the character first appeared in Army War Heroes #22 (from which this cover is reprinted). In the mid-80s, Charlton returned for one last kick at the can and one of the 'new' titles was Iron Corporal, which lasted only 3 issues beginning with #23.
The Overstreet notes that most of these mid-80s Charltons had 'low print' runs, but I wonder how low they were, and if these are really any tougher to find than Charlton from the 60s and 70s.
Anyway, here is the full cover - I sort of thought someone might make a lewd comment about the first clue - new one up soon.

Well done - 200 points for Mike K.
The question is - how many Gold Key titles did people look through before remembering that they published Star Trek for more than 10 years.
I didn't do much searching until your third clue, and not even then. I had to think of a title published by Marvel, DC, and at least one other company. Tarzan? Doc Savage? The art didn't suggest those titles. Star Trek? Maybe. And I was off to the GCD.

Yup you're right - the little grey box under the Attach Files heading isn't there in Firefox, but it is when I use Explorer.
That's weird - never had that problem before.
I couldn't see the Manage Attachment button either. So I went over to the CBR Q & A Board and read the thread about the vBulletin 3.5.4 Upgrade.
One thing everyone needs to do is log out. This will clear your cookies. Then log back in. After I did that, I could see the Manage Attachments button. And all the little editing functions at the top of your message start working.
When you log back in, be sure to spell your user name exactly the same, especially using capital letters in the same place. It took me a few tries before my log in was successful.
There is also talk on that thread about the "Switch Editor Mode" button which helps some people. If you are posting a message, the SEM button is the "little a,/big A" symbol on the far right.
But you gotta log out and log back in before this will work.
Now whose hand is that in the current clue? And is that real Kirby art or faux Kirby?

Thanks, ROK. I did log out as you suggested, and I did see the message that said my cookies had been erased, but CBR says I'm still logged in. Even quitting my browser and coming back here hasn't changed my logged-in status.
However, I do notice a subtle redesign to the Reply To Thread area. The one thing I can't seem to find is the a/A symbol you describe.

At last!
Marvel Super-heroes 27, July, 1970.
Pegged it as 1970s Kirby from the get-go, but didn't get steered on the right track until that final clew.
Just realised what you fellows are on about with the change in format. I don't seem to be able to insert links or italicise.
Or insert smilies.
That's it!

Actually, every time I come & go from the site I log in or out. If I'm not actively looking at the forums, I'm not logged in (and sometimes even if I am looking, I'm not logged in), so I don't think that's the issue. I'm still not getting e-mail updates, and this morning I tried un-subscribing & then re-subscribing to the thread, but that didn't do anything either. I wasn't notified about LR's last post - clue 2 (approx 29 minutes ago), I just happened to check.

I believe it was... and that was probably the one I actually had. As a kid, I could never figure out what issue of a Gold Key title I had, and I long ago lost that particular one, either into the ether, or in the Ottawa ice storm of several years ago, which wiped out large swathes of my collection which I was storing with my folks at the time.

HINT - If you take the first four letters of the publisher's first name and combine it with the first 3 letters of his last name, you get the name of the company/imprint that published this book. This stuck in my mind for some reason. If Martin Goodman had decided to name his company by this method, it would have been called Martgoo instead of Marvel. And Harry Donenfeld would have published Harrdon Comics instead of DC.
I guess it's a good thing they didn't use this method...

Otherwise, it looks like a damn good match... weird.
