View Full Version : What are the best Spider-Man stories everyone can agree on?

Mister Mets
06-13-2005, 06:51 AM
The purpose of this thread is to find out whether or not there are Spider-Man stories which everyone can agree are great. I'll post a starter list, but everyone else is free to add their own favorites. Then if anyone else thinks that a story isn't one of the best Spider-Man stories (or they wish to applaud the choices of another) they'll post that. I request that only people who have read the entire story post to make that decision, and that people give a reason for why it shouldn't be included on such a list, even if it's something simple like "There have been better Spider-Man VS. Green Goblin stories" or "It's a boring." If you think no one else on the board has read a story, you're free to post that, as I wouldn't want a story to be included if only one guy thinks it's great, and everyone else has no idea how good/ bad it is.

And to avoid any trolls, I'll only count the opinions of people who have more than ten posts, and have at least posted something positive once.

Starter list....
Amazing Fantasy # 15
Amazing Fantasy # 16-18- Painted written by mini series by Kurt Busiek, focusing on the time period between Amazing Fantasy #15, and Amazing Spider-MAn #1
Amazing Spider-MAn #31-33- Peter goes to college, and the Master PLanner saga
Amazing Spider-MAn #50-52- Spider-Man No more and the first Kingpin story.
Amazing Spider-MAn #53-59- VS. Doctor Octopus, Kazar, and Spider Slayer, Spider-Man gets amnesia.
Amazing Spider-MAn #121-122- If you don't know what happenes in this story, go to any comic book store, buy the 40 years of Spider-Man CD Rom, and read it.
Amazing Spider-MAn #193-200- Aunt May's death faked, VS. Kingpin, Black Cat, Mysterio, and the Burglar
Amazing Spider-MAn #229-230- "Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut"
Amazing Spider-MAn #231-232- VS. Cobra, and Hyde
Amazing Spider-MAn #238-239- 1: Hobgoblin
Amazing Spider-MAn #248- The Kid WHo Collected Spider-Man
Amazing Spider-MAn #267 "The Commuter"
Amazing Spider-MAn #300- 1: Venom

Peter Parker Spider-Man #30-32- VS. Fusion
Kraven's Last Hunt- Kraven buries, and tries to replace Spider-Man.

I'd like to add these two.
Amazing SPider-man Annual #1- First apperance of the Sinister Six
Spider-man Unlimited #3 - We learn the backstory of Dr. Octopus as he tries to find a cure for AIDS to save his childhood sweetheart

I disagree with the Fusion fight, and amazing fantasy 16-18.

Peter Parker Spider-Man #30-32- VS. Fusion
Fusion is just a poor man's Mysterio with Eddie Brock's mentality. There's nothing original or interesting about him. I found the entire storyline insulting.

Spider-Man 2 the Movie
Spidey fights erectile disfunction while Doc Ock saves the day? Give me a !@#$ing break.

Additions

Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man #73-76: Octopus and Owl
Black Cat returns on the side of angels and is nearly killed in a conflict between Doc Ock and The Owl.

In fact, now that I think about it, just put Spectacular Spider-Man 73-100. It's one long story arc where Black Cat and Spider-Man try and work out their relationship while the Kingpin keeps getting in between them. Besides, it introduces the greatest villian of all time, The Spot!

Amazing Spider-MAn #267 "The Commuter"
Amazing Spider-MAn #300- 1: Venom
Amazing Spider-MAn Volume 2 #30-35, 37, 38- 1: Ezekiel, VS. Morlun, Aunt May discovers his identity.
Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #73-76- Doctor Octopus Vs. The Owl.
Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #78-79- Gets ready for final battle with Doctor Octopus
Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #98-100- 1: Spot
Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #107-110- VS. Daredevil, The SIn-Eater story
Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #134-136- VS. Electro, Return of the Sin-Eater
Spectacular Spider-Man #178-190, 199-200- The Child Within, Vulture gets cancer, Final Battles with Green Goblin 2
Peter Parker Spider-Man #27-28- Contemplates euthanasia on an enemy in really bad shape.
Kraven's Last Hunt- Kraven buries, and tries to replace Spider-Man.
Spider-Man VS. Wolverine- Spider-Man out of his league in East Germany.
Ultimate Spider-Man #8-13- VS. The Kingpin, Peter tells Mary Jane he's Spider-Man

I added Amazing Spider-Man Annual 1 because I agree that it belongs on a best of list for it's cameos, innovative splash pages, the escape of Doctor Octopus, the way Spider-MAn loses his powers, and more.

I didn't add Spider-Man Unlimited 3 because I didn't think it was one of the best Doctor Octopus stories ever (although I did enjoy it.) My first veto.

I didn't add Untold Tales of Spider-Man because it's not one huge story, and the only people who have read every issue would have to be huge fans of the book. Feel free to add specific issues.

I didn't add Spectacular Spider-Man #73-100 because I don't see it as one huge story (for one thing- it had different writers). However I did add issues 73-76, and 98-100 to the list since those seem to be Charagon's favorites. i should note that I have never read them.

I also revised Spectacular Spider-Man #178-200 to include only 178-190, and 199-200, as the other issues weren't as crucial to the Harry as Green Goblin saga.

Amazing 39-40. Before this story, the Green Goblin was a boring run-of-the-mill criminal. With this tale, he arguably became Spidey's greatest foe. It also changed the hero/villain "secret identity" dynamic.

Amazing Spider-Man #3 stands as my all-time favorite comic book. The origin of Doc Ock ...and there's that really cool spider spotlight scene. This issue has sort of a weird golden-age feel that almost makes it feel timeless. It really doesn't seem like a product of 1963. Stan and Steve at their best!

IXnay on the Amazing Spider-MAn Volume 2 #30-35, 37, 38-
That Spider-Totem stuff always seemed incredibly out of palce to me. Not to mention Spidey saying that nobody has ever hit him as hard as Morlun or he's never worked with anybody who had powers like him goes directly against his past experiences.

I'd include:

Amazing Spider-Man #290-292, and Annual #21. Peter and Mary Jane finally get married.
Amazing #50(second series, or #491 original numbering). Peter and MJ's reconciliation, plus Captain America and Doctor Doom!
Amazing #502, "Would You Like Pants With That?" A self-contained funny piece involving Leo, the tailor to the superhumans!
Tangled Web #4: "Severance Package". Spider-Man doesn't really star in it, but it does show a darker side of Spidey's not-so-friendly neighborhood, as a flunkie who failed the Kingpin is called on the carpet by his boss...
Tangled Web #5-6: "Flowers for Rhino". A fairly decent story by Peter Milligan, showing what happens when the dumbest figure in Spidey's rogues gallery becomes the smartest.
Marvels #4. Adds to the death of Gwen Stacy without taking anything away from the original. One more reason to detest "Sins Past".

Iīd like to nominate Peter Parker Spider-man #44-47 vol:2 "A death in the family"

One of my favorite Green Goblin stories and the best ending ever!

It's an all right story, but not one of my favorites ever, so I can't add it to the list. I thought the set up in Peter Parker Spider-Man #25 was a lot stronger. Incidentally, since you enjoyed "Death in the Family" so much, I'd highly recommend Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore, and Brian Bollard. It has similar themes, some incredible art, and should be available for 5 bucks anywhere with a half-decent TPB collection.

I was a bit surprised to find out who he was, but other than that, it didn't really stand out. It was pretty cool, though.

How about the Ultimate continuity? USM #13 was very note-worthy.

Y'know, this might not be a popular choice as it was during the clone saga (which I actually enjoyed, even though the wheels came off), but Amazing Spider-Man #400 remains one of my favourite comics. It was beautifully handled, and May should have been left dead after that.

The Death of Jean Dewolfe is already on the list. I don't want ass the Spider-MAn VS. Firelord story because I've read better Spider-MAn VS. unbeatable villain stories. If you have specific Micheline stories to recommend, I'd be happy to hear them. So far Amazing Spider-MAn #300's the only one on my list. I haven't read Hobgoblin Lives in years, so I can't say anything against it. It'll be added to the list.

There's nothing wrong with adding a good story from a really bad time period. Amazing Spider-Man #400 had some great moments, my favorites with Ben Reily's reaction to May's sickness. I'll add it for now.

I hate Spider-Man vs Wolverine with passion, Priest might be a good BP writer but his Spider-Man was horrible, amateurish idiot. And that fight with Wolverine was soo bad.

The second Spidey/Batman crossover. I think of this as, like, the archetypal perfect comic story. Perfect in pacing, plot, and characterization. (And my favorite Spidey team-up story, ever. And this is from a man with a near-complete run of Marvel Team-up.)

Which one is this. Is this the one by JM Dematteis, and MArk Bagley with Spider-Man & Batman VS. Joker & Carnage? Because I actually really like that story.

Oh no. I liked the Joker/Carnage one alright, but it felt too generic team-up-y to me. I'm nominatin' the second Ras' Ah Ghul/Kingpin story, with art by Graham
Nolan. Much deeper, richer characterization than the first one, with a heckuvalot more attention paid to the plot. Just a great story all 'round.

The new list then...Amazing Volume 2 #38 is kicked out, because of the request to skip any JMS issues.

I'm not going to add all of Stan Lee's issues, or Spectacular #72-100, or Untold Tales, because I'm only interested in specific stories here.

I'm afraid I'm gonna have to put the cat amongst the pigeons and say that, without a shadow of a doubt the Spider-Man story I enjoyed the most was Maximum Carnage, sorry I know most don't like it but for me it is the just the greatest. I also liked the Cosmic Powers storyline and the McFarlane run on Spider-Man

I'm against Todd's run. It was all style and no substacne.

Also, while Spider-man/Batman was a really good comic, I wouldn't put it as being great. If any crossover needs to go there, the very first Superman/Spider-man story does.

I liked the Andru/Conway Spidey Supes book a lot too. Jes' awesomely epic in scope, with a real sense of wild adventure.

But there were some serious characterization an' plot problems, too. Luthor's trying to destroy the world for Why? Luthor brought Doctor Octopus along because of Which Now? 'An the book definitely needed more mingling of supporting casts. Very Good comic, Solid A minus, one of my top ten favorite Spidey team ups ever...

But no way up with the Dematties/Nolan one shot... Where ALL the characters were spot-on, and the plot, well, made some sense.

Great list.

I was always a big fan of Gang War from Amazing 284-288.

Also, I think the Spider-Man vs. Firelord battle belongs on this list. Its one of the best underdog victories in comics. I know Spidey's been in this situation before, but this battle just has the something extra.

Though all the stories weren't great I think Gerry Conway's stories from ASM #119 to #149 are worth reading. I know the villains are sometimes cheesy, Spidey was underpowered and some things were plain silly (like the Doc Ock marrying Aunt May story arc or the Jackal sneaking up on Peter) but I think Gerry Conway had Spidey's character down well. Of course, with ASM #119 and #120 you also get to see how JMS totally screwed up continuity in explaining Sins Past

Any Chris Claremont Marvel Teamup story is worth reading (another guy that had Spidey's early character down, Unfortunately Claremont has lost the touch but he was the man back in the late 70's, early '80s with the XMEN). These issues are MTU #57-71, 74-77, 79-86, 88-89

Bill Mantlo Marvel Team Up stories #39 thru #46 were good (featured Human Torch, back in time to Salem Witch trails, and Spidey travels to future and meets Deathlok and Killraven)

I also think Uncanny XMEN 190-191 is worth getting (Spidey guest appears in alternate universe story that actually ties in with Claremont's Red Sonja/Spidey teamup back in MTU. Let's just say that Spider-Man 2 didn't have the first Jesus analogy)

Marvel Two and One annual #2 was also good (Spidey guest stars with Thing in his book, Thanos is the villain)

ASM annual 1996 was a true miracle...an annual that was actually really good (most of them usually sucked). It had flashback stories with Gwen/Cap Stacy/Kraven and a story right after MJ and Peter got married that featured the past of his parents

And Spider-Man Blue (did anyone mention that?)

I also enjoyed most of Marv Wolfman's run (ASM 182-200. I don't think his stories after 200 were very good though he didn't write many issues after that I think. The first Black Cat story was great. Too bad they had to ruin her character after that)

Also ASM #267 (hail Peter David) and ASM 269-270 (Firelord)

Of course the current Spider-Man/Human Torch mini is awesome

You can probably tell I am an old school fangirl that doesn't think comics are as good as they used to be (with some exceptions, like Spider-Girl)

I agree with that part of your list. The rest I either didn't like as much or didn't read. ASM 400 would be up there as great but the actress ruined it for me (though very touching it wasn't really her :( )

I'll add Spider-Man: Blue, and Spider-Man/ Human Torch to the list because I really liked them, and Marvel Two In One Annual 2 because I haven't read it so I can't judge whether or not it's a good story and Amazing Spider-Man Annual 1996 because while I haven't lread it in years, I really liked both stories. Uncanny X-Men #190-191, and Amazing Spider-Man #119-120 are okay stories that I just don't want to add to any "Best of" list.

And Amazing Spider-Man #400 will be excised.

Incidentally, I would really like to hear your opinions on what stories didn't belong on this list. I honestly expected that eventually this would be an empty list (hard as it is to believe someone could vote against "The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man)
