View Full Version : WTF is up with the Great Lakes Avengers ...

... being such an enjoyable book to read! I just read the first two issues and I gotta say I'm loving it. Humor, death, Squirrel Girl, humor, hilarious cameos, death, Monkey Joe, humor, public service announcements, death, and even Deathurge! I haven't laughed at loud at a book for a long time ... and yet at the same time the book has heart. Not something you usually find on the stands.

I never thought I'd see the day when GLA would be the best Avengers book on the market!

I think the best Avengers title out there is New Avengers.
(come on, Flatman vs Captain America?
Dinah Soar versus Spider-Woman?
It's no contest, really. :)

I'd prefer Flatman and Dinah over those other two characters every day. Especially Cap. Gimme back a real USAgent, no the crappy character that's running around since Force Works was canceled.

GLA is a fine read and together with Young Avengers my favorite Avenger book.

GLA is a great read. It would be great if it could continue after the limited series is over. Dan Slott and Paul Pelletier are two creators that really know how to do a great monthly comic. Bendis has never shown me that he's capable of more than 6 issue arcs, where 3 of the issues are pretty void of content. He's not in the same league as Slott is as a monthly comics writer, but the characters of Captain America and company make New Avengers a better book. (it certainly isn't the lame new concept or the writer)

It's no contest, really. :)I'm not talking about how they would fare in a fight. The New Avengers would kick the GLA's ass hands down! Luke Cage could mop up the floor with them by himself, and even take a ten minute break in the process. Darkhawk could probably kick their heads in by himself.

In terms of being a more enjoyable comic, GLA wins hands down. They've managed to get so much done in two issues (and fill it with dozens of hilarious jokes) what it would take New Avengers at least twelve issues to do. The New Avengers is on issue 5 and all they've managed to do is get naked. They haven't even managed to form the team yet!

Oh ... and I did forget to mention Young Avengers. Fun book, taking its time a bit too much, but still fun. My second favorite Avengers title.

Actually, by issue 3 we have an Avengers team. Cage, the 2 Spiders, Cap and Iron Man.
And in Alias and the Pulse, BMB is varying the lengths. I actually think it's the expected action that slows him down.

GLA is the best avengers book because new avengers is just a wolverine/spiderman/cage team up book. Cap'n american and iron man are only above the sentry in terms of role in the book. And the sentry is getting and arc and may surpass them.

If NA was canceled and GLA took its place the world of comics and at large would be a better place.

Why? It seems there are a lot of people enjoying both.
Bendis can have his NotVengers. I just would love to see a book for the more traditional fans. But as long as New Thunderbolts and Young Avengers are around I won't mind.

Actually, I think Young Avengers is the best Avengers book running, with GLA a close second. New Avengers is suffering from Bendicitis. The humorous dialogue seems just a little too forced.

Anyone want to take bets on the next GLAvenger to snuff it? My money's on Doorman.

Squirrel Girl

Actually, I think overcomebyfumes is right about it being Doorman, based on clues in the preview pages to #3. In every issue thus far, the story starts with a flash forward to "the end of everything", and we can see which of the GLA have survived to that point...thus far, Doorman has not been seen.

I haven't read this title, but I've heard good things.

A thought: The Avengers are very location-specific. Do midwesterners enjoy being associated with the GLA? Is NY-centric Marvel taking a shot at Milwaukee, or offering a joking compliment?

As a Midwesterner who lives nowhere near the Great Lakes (seriously, how is every state between Ohio and Wyoming the Midwest?), I'm very happy to be associated with the GLA. And the Midwest is boring, so I don't see how one could take offense to it.

I read issue 3 - it was in this week's sneaks - and I got teary-eyed at the end of the book.

Yes, I was quite caught off guard by the death in this latest month's issue 3... I also gave into temptation and skimmed the preview copy at my local shop and, hoy boy, the four or five page preview that was posted on line does NOT give away nor even hint at the surprise death that arrives by the last page or so.

That being said, There is an obvious subplot running through this book... I don't think that it's a spoiler to say that the giant wormhole effect that has been swirling from issue number 1's conclusion right on through to the present issue is going to be a major factor in the continuation of the book. I have already posted my theory about 'machina de deus"... and I'll stand by it...
I see great significance that the remaining main characters of the GLA are being sucked into it one by one and we're witnessing the end of the timeline in brief glimpses.

If you don't understand where I'm going with this, (to avoid giving it away and requiring a spoiler) go back and re-read the comments and word balloons of the OTHER GLA characters other than Diana Soar and Mr. Craig Immortal in the last few pages of issue #1... including Malestrom ....that is, what's going on when Malestrom opens the portal or fires up his machine. What is it supposed to do, and what does the GLA theorize that it is doing.... 'nuff said! ;)

GLA #1- Diana Soar dies
GLA #2- Grasshopper dies in record time
GLA #3- Doorman dies? Wait a week and see for yourself!
GLA #4- Everybody dies???!!!!

The book wasn't my cup of tea at first, but's it has actually grown on me.
I re-read the first two issues and found the events that unfolded quite fascinating...there's an underlying pathos that makes the comedy too sad (does that even make sense?) to not make me feel guilty about laughing...

Loving this book so far. I guess i'll wait until wednesday for spoilers to see who dies and to quote Monkey Joe "it better not be Squirrel Girl that's, all im saying!" Just wanted to add that i normally read what happens on wednesdays and pick up the actual books later in the week. I dont mind finding out what happens before hand it generally doesnt effect my buying habits. its just that the nearest comic shop is a 2 hour drive there and back and i try and wait until the weekends to do my comic buying since i work through the week and the place is only open from 2-7.

That reminds me. I have NOT read the preview issue so I do not know what happens, but Squirrel Girl DID ask that Monkey Joe become a GLAer if she joins, so it is very possible that Monkey Joe could kick the bucket. That would be a potential tearjerker and catch most people off guard. Also, it could be that Leather Man gets killed off, although he wanted to join the Greaseman and the Village People...

The midwest stretches from the Appalachian Mountains to the Great Plains.
Basically, Use michigan as the center point of the Great Lakes, and include one state in all directions. That is the Mid-West. Iowa, Indianna, Illinois, Wisconson, Ohio, Pensylvania, West Virginia. You could make an argument for extending it in almost any direction, but other regional factors begin to intrude.... and, you'd be wrong.

Take it from me, I was born and raised a Michigander. (Try making a superhero out of that, I dare you... ;) )

GLA really is the best Avengers book right now, followed closely by YA. NA is better than I thought it would be considering how much I despise everything Bendis, but it still rates a distant third.

I hope that the portal serves as a reboot and all the GLA members are revived so that Marvel can do the right thing and make the GLA an ongoing series with Dan and Paul continuing. I LOVE the addition of Squirrel Girl. For years I wanted her to join the New Warriors, but this is even better! And yes, I do own Marvel Super Heroes #8 which has her first appearance. I am not ashamed!

Any classic-Avengers fans who are peeved at what BMB is doing in NA really, really should be reading this book. It's a delicious satire on Disassembled and NA.
When does issue #4 of the 4 part mini-series hit the stands???? Soon?

Maybe you should wait and see how Defenders #1 is before saying that. The last time around it wasn't so good.<g>

If anyone on the team manages to survive, can we please have a special "Funeral for a Friend" issue for poor Monkey Joe?

Yes his death was less heroic than Hawkeye biting the dust.

Actually, by issue 3 we have an Avengers team. Cage, the 2 Spiders, Cap and Iron Man.

i think the point here is we know from previews, advance solicitations and hype that wolverine, sentry and ronin are all also supposed to be on this team, and won't be until issue 12 or so (when the ronin story ends). so the team is still not fully formed, and its already into issue 7.

most new teams do establish who the members are a lot quicker than this.

I looked through the most recent one and I saw Unthinkable Doom back. Was he really back or was it something explainable?

Dr. Doom is most definitely back. As for why he's going after Squirrel Girl now? I have no idea.

Yeah I know but why her now? You'd think he'd try to get back to scheming against Reed for beating him at his own game with magic but I guess Doom wanted to start smaller before he went to the big fish.

this has been her first public appearance since then, and his first real oppurtunity to strike back.

I wouldn't say that. Avengers teams have always been tweaked every now and then. I think the problem is that too much information is given out too far in advance. Do we really need to know who's going to be joining the Avengers 6 months in advance?

So, of ALL the places to return, Doom returns here and for the sole purpose of Squirrel girl? WTF?

That's what I'm saying although I could probably go with thik_3rd's explanation or for the purpose of just laying low until be comes up with a few plans for Reed and the rest of the MU.

Doom had a free afternoon, decided to work out some kinks and off a longstanding nuisance... no biggie.

It's beats chillin' in a beanbag in front of the big-screen in Doomstadt, doesn't it?

#4 needs to come out already!

I'm gettin' all jumpy...

I haven't had my fix.

Plus, it needs to come out so it can be collected in TPB form. I'm tired of pimping out I'm With Stupid on City of Heroes for Slott! He doesn't even pay me anymore... he just kicks me in the groin.

DAMN YOU SLOTT!

what if doorman is the portal?

Dun Dun Dun
I'm thinking more and more that you may be right...
and with Doc Doom now in the mix, seeking Squirrel Girl... well, HE could stop Malestrom, if he wanted to mess with the GLA on his own... In fact, HE could use the time-machine to fix everything or turn the clock back to keep the whole mess from happening now...

Is it my imagination, or did we miss GLA #4 this month?
Is it running late, or am I just over-eager???

it drops this wednesday.
I thought I was loosing my mind.
I got on the Marvel website and started looking, week by week, starting with this week for two months into the future, and couldn't find it....
Then I started working backwards, trying to find GLA #3.... and couldn't find it.
Finally, I stumbled upon GLA #4, promised for July 6th... and realized I hadn't seen it arrive in my comic shop yet.
Whew... I'm saved!
Now, having read their summary, that not only is it the end of the GLA, but the whole furshlong Marvel Universe.... I have a NEW THEORY...
I'm betting that just as the events of GLA #1 were "inspired" by the Avengers Dissembled...inspiring Craig, Mr. I, to pursue the GLA as the New Avengers... that as the entire GLA team snuffs it thanks to Malestrom, that Mr. I get's his wish.... thanks to Wanda and Company over in House of M...
That's right, they all get sucked into the white light, and none of this mess ever happened.... Poof! It's time turned back to Issue #1. So, until HofM is reversed, either the GLA are back in place as heroes not dead, or else, Mr. I dies and is reunited with Diana Soar and happy with them all in place in HofM!
