Wouldn't that just be most, if not all, albums? I don't think there is an album that is universally loved or hated. Even the crappiest bubblegum pop music has its admirers.

Judging by previous recent discussion, just about anything by the Eagles.

I'm going on a limb (actually a really small limb!) but I will go with Oasis' Be Here Now. I actually like this album. But I also like SOTSOG and Heathen Chemistry too. I just bought their latest so I can't comment as of yet.

The recently-discussed Metallica "Black Album" seems to fit the bill. Depending on where you stand, it's either the album wherein Metallica "sold out" or the moment when they finally achieved long-deserved commercial and popular success.

The last couple post OK Computer Radiohead albums fall under that category. Whatever, I still like them.

i know invincible by michael jackson is one of them.man i think that album was THE best R&B (not pop) album of 2001,besides india arie, and alicia's debut albums. how can you not like butterflies, invincible and ubreakable? the last two songs are VINTAGE michael.
Arrested Developments second album (1994's "Zingalamaduni") their first LP 3 Years 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life of--
was so popular and the band became so ubiquitous that the listening public quickly tired of them and missed out on a superior and brilliant followup in this album.so i guess technicly its more overrlooked than disputed.
oh yeah the last 2 outkast albums aswell.well actually 1 and a half sense alot of people loved big boi's speakerboxxx.
Living color-Times up,arguably better than vivid.
For KISS fans, there are two:
1) "Dynasty". . where KISS really started to change their sound, and went more into songs w/ a beat (ie: disco). . one of the funniest things I've ever seen, was on USA's show "Night Flight". . when Ace Frehely tried to defend "I was made for loving you" as "Rock-disco". . . LOL
The thing is, if you're a KISS fan, and not JUST a heavy metal fan, you tend to have a more open mind for the more "theatrical" style of rock, and Dynasty has some really good "disco-y" songs on it.
The above also is true of the second thing I mentioned:
2) "the Elder". . this album really divided the fans, and was KISS' first real "flop" album after starting to go gold & platinum w/ "Alive" 10 years earlier. The concept album is about the quest of a young man to save his love from the evil Mr. Blackwell.
of course, the majority of the songs are no where NEAR "metal" (although there are some heavy tracks on the album), but most of the "arena rock" songs are really good, and it remains one of my fave KISS albums.
I own multiple copies of "the Elder" (mostly because the US release mixes the tracks up, so the concept album doesn't flow as intended on teh US releases) , and I still listen to it fairly frequently.

Seeing how Oasis' Be Here Now has already been nominated, I'll go with the other one from another thread, The Stone Roses Second Coming.
so um how old are you? :) lol

THE BEATLES - Let it Be
Some people think it's half-finished, some people think it's Paul McCartney's first solo album, hell, even Paul himself went back and released a stripped-down version. Other people would probably answer that with songs like Get Back, Across the Universe and The Long and Winding Road, you can't really pretend it's a bad album.
U2 - The Joshua Tree
A watered-down, overblown version of what U2 used to be for its detractors; the ultimate collection of classic U2 songs for its fans.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - Born in the USA
The ultimate E-Street Band album, full of classic songs and poignant lyrics for some people; the album where the Boss sold his soul and started making compromise to appeal to the masses for others.

Bitches Brew has got to be the ultimate example of this. I've had more, nastier fights about BB than about any other album.
