Illyana making a comeback?
Peter, Jr.?
Just who is Piotr (Peter) Nikolaievitch Rasputin?
Born on the Soviet collective farm called the Ust-Ordynski Collective near Lake Baikal in Siberia, the mutant who’s known as Colossus first appeared in Giant Size X-Men #1 in 1975. He was one of the “new” X-Men recruited by Professor Charles Xavier to save the original X-Men team from the sentient island Krakoa. Colossus has the superhuman ability to transmute his entire body into solid organic steel.
Despite being almost invulnerable when in his fully armored form, Colossus sacrificed himself in the pages of Uncanny X-Men #390 in 2001. That issue finally put an end to the Legacy Virus storyline.
X-fans rejoiced when the Russian of steel was brought back to life by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday in Astonishing X-Men #4 last year.
But is he the same Colossus that had suffered the death of his parents (Nikolai and Alexandra) and his younger sister, Illyana Nikolovna Rasputina (also known as Magik)? Is he the same one who left the X-Men and joined Magneto and his Acolytes? Is he the same one who was the man in Kitty Pryde’s life?
This past weekend, at the X-Men panel at WizardWorld: Philly, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada said that solo X-minis needed to be special and carry a significant impact for the character. This was a reiteration of a point he made in his weekly Joe Fridays interview a few weeks back when he called the September-debuting Colossus: Bloodline five-issue mini-series by writer David Hine and artist Jorge Lucas “sensational”.

the article has me interested, ill admit. i like hine's interpretation of piotr being a "ticking time-bomb" currently, as i too sense a lot of things building under piotr's surface in astonishing. still wish they had someone else on the art. lucas draws people too stiff, especially bulky, powerful figures (ironman, for example).

Gee, somehow I doubt all X-Men minis will have that "significant impact" thing going on, but this one seems that it actually might! The only one I can think of that's successfully followed this route so far is Endsong. Still, this book sounds cool so far.

"cosmic dimension-hopping", eh?
Sounds like Illyana may just be involved after all! That or Mikhail, who I noticed was suspiciously not mentioned at all in the article.. I hope they're all there. Having all 3 Rasputin kids together for the first time would make this fanboy totally weak.
I'm real excited for this!

I think this miniseries has me worried... whenever I hear "long time fan" related to a character, it makes me cautious.
First, Colossus killed Proteus, not so much in anger, but because there was no other choice, and felt terrible about it. Riptide was a different story- he had just killed dozens of people and critically injured one of his dearest friends. Harpoon would have been the same situation- after hitting Kitty with a slayspear. It may have been rage, but it also could be termed "righteous anger". He broke Whiphand's (?) neck, but he was Brood and there weren't a whole lot of other options at the time, as he was strangling a couple people, including his teammate Longshot. He even had enough control to manage to not kill Pete Wisdom in his jealous fit, when even a half strength punch would've popped his head clean off.
Let's not forget there was a biological basis for his insanity - the headwound from the X-cutioner in Uncanny annual 17. That was healed in Excalibur 71, and shouldn't be used as an excuse.
Ord's imprisonment, on the other hand, was enough to drive a man insane. I hope Hine is basing Piotr's temperment off POW research- I think it would be a shame to use the previous insanity as a plot point.
I'll definitely be checkimg this out, both in issue and the likely trade

It would be great to see Peter/Piotr Jr. in the comics again, outside of X-Men: The End. Maybe Colossus will actually be able to put 1 + 1 together this time, and realize he's his son. :p

As some have already pointed out, that would end Colossus as a useful character. He would drop everything to try to raise the boy, to be the father hee will have felt he should have been. That being said, Nereel wanted to keep Peter hidden from his father. If I remember the conception scene correctly, it was kinda a no strings attached deal... but you could wonder if there is another Rasputin running around from the other girl, A future plot twist, perhaps?
How Kitty would deal with Pete Jr. might be interesting...

Great article/interview, Benjamin!
This mini sounds very promising.
CAN"T WAIT! My all time fave character here.
But I was looking at Bachelo's picture of Peter there. Even put it as my background on the ole CPU.
Did anyone else notice around his neck is a Sickle and Hammer icon?
Hmmmmmmm

I am in on this regardless, but the blurb sounds quite promising. I will never look down at a chance that another Rasputin will return. Actually, of the three children, Pete's was the most unlikely return. I am skeptical of a Peter Jr. story, but I would have to see how it played out.
I do find it interesting that it took for Peter to die and be resurrected for a writer to look at him as someone who might have issues. Of course, the vast majority of characters have untapped potential so Peter is just part of the rule, not an exception.
This mini sounds like a chance for him to really evolve as a character. Maybe it will show how strong Pete really is...I can hope, anyway.
Just as long as there is not secondary mutation, I will be happy. IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, LET THERE BE NO SECONDARY MUTATIONS!

Well it's about damn time Colossus got something like this... just about every other X character under the sun get's more attention, and even their own books b4 Colossus does.
As for his anger. In the early days there were a few key moments, mainly in the 1st few annuals were Colossus just loses it and goes into a berserker type rage:
1. In Annual 3 I think, Colossus thinks Storm was Killed by Arkon and rips a tree out of the ground and kicks the crap out of Arkon with it. Cyclops tells him to stop.
2. Annual #4 Kitty is under attack by some huge creature and Colossus freaks out and knock the creature and himself through a wall where they fall a couple of miles to the ground. Colossus is the only one that comes out of hte crater that was created by the impact and it states that he is in a berserker rage that rivals Wolverine.
There are other moments were Colossus lets go, and it always involves his friends being in danger.

Those situations both could qualify as the "righteous anger" I was talking about. Another example would be in "Nightcrawler's Inferno", when he pried open the gates of hell to save his friend. I find the idea that his strength increases almost geometrically when those he cares about are in danger. Must be organic steel adrenaline or something.

Yeah, Peter definitely has his "COLOSSUS SMASH!!!!!" moments. :D
But as stated, it always coincides with worry over someone he cares about.
I'm looking forward to seeing how Hine addresses this aspect of Pete.

Good point the Colossus Smash of Ord was more of a revenge attack, then an attack that had to do with someone he cares about. Sure the team was there, and they're his friends and family.... but he was tortured by Ord. So I don't see that attack as being one over his close friends. :)

I'm going to say definitively that the possible return of the Rasputin clan has me genuinely interested in a mini I was going to pass on.
So now...I'm in!

Typically, Colossus only Hulk's-out when he's concerned about loved ones. But yes, his Ord beatdown wasn't an example of this. I guess torture and endless imprisonment can cause a guy to lose it every now and again.

I mentioned in my original post that I thought being held captive for year(s?) would be the only satisfactory explanation for the "insanity" Hine was talking about.
That being said, Ord was threatening two of his friends at the time as well.

It's not nitpicky at all. It's his most recent "Hulk-out," and may symbolize a more agressive nature to him.
I mean, that's probably the most relevant example you can name. It's the most recent example of his agression and includes the recent developments in his character. Plus, it took place in the X-Men's flagship title, which regularly sells well over 100k.
What's the opposite of nitpicky? :D

Doom Hammer, I was really thinking more of Beast's comment than yours for being nitpicky (and no offense intended to Beast, just making a point). I don't really see the need correct me on this point, considering Pete's beatdown of Ord was the exception, not the rule. And I'd say that his anger was understandable, given the circumstances.
I'd also say I do agree with you that the Ord smackdown was an example of a VERY angry person, and that I'm pretty sure Hine will be touching on this newly formed anger in the mini.

I just hope that these rumored guest characters do not take up too much of the story and we get some real time with Colossus as a character. I would like to see him be able to stand on his own.

I'm was a little dissapointed when they brought Colossus back, because it has something to do with cloning, and after Piotr died Sinister offered Nightcrawler the chance to bring him back. But 'Crawler said no he didn't want to disrespect the memory. Now they've done this, when I read the piece in Astonishing it was a bit crap, but as Colossus is my favourite charecter I'm happy as well. I thought the "One Tin Soldier Rides Away" was beautifully executed and was a closer to him. But I'm up for this as well

it had nothing to do with cloning. ord just took piotr's body away and left another in his place, which was then cremated.

My mistake, that's even more annoying, how exactly did he get the body in the first place. I only read 1 of the series, half heartedly

How did a dude who can travel between dimensions grab Pete's body?
I'm guessing quite easily. ;)

I think the death issue had some good points but overall was a big mistake and it was not time to let Colossus go. He hadn't had his time in the spotlight yet. Plus the Legacy Virus is crap..
I also think that the way they brought Colossus back is probably the best way possible (since Lobdell tried to screw any chance of bringing him back by cremating Peter :P ). I much prefer this way over some supernatural event or cloning. The X-Men send his body off for autopsy or something and it gets switched. Maybe Peter's brain should have been long dead by then but this is alien science, Peter's a mutant, and it's comics after all ;) Or maybe the injection preserved him somehow...
Overall it was not time to let Colossus die forever ... we need to see him reach his full potential as a character and then maybe they can think about killing him again.

Full potential? He's a big, quiet (note: I didn't say "monosyllabic" that time) guy who turns into a bigger, steel-plated guy. He has occasional artistic leanings, which somehow makes him "sensitive." He used to have an touchy Soviet political background, which has since fallen to capitalism and pseudo-democracy. If he's something other than muscle (note: I didn't say "dumb muscle"), some of us just can't see it.
And I'm backing quietly out of the thread now. Shhhh....

In my opinion, Colossus is so much more than how you describe him, Schellenberg. You could take Nightcrawler, Storm, Cyclops, or any other great character and completely spin their history to minimize what makes them great, as you have done here with Colossus.
You don't like the character, that's fine. I'm sure plenty of folks don't like him. There's a whole lot of characters I don't like either. But man, you seem fairly vehement when it comes to hating Colossus. I think it's fair to assume I've seen your comments on at least two other boards, based on the identical tone and different variations of "tin-plated idiot" used by someone fitting your description at each. Out of curiosity, what makes Colossus so intolerable that you feel the need to blast him so often? This is intended as a friendly question, nothing more.
