"BOSTON - On April 25, Gregory Despres arrived at the U.S.-Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine, carrying a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles and a chain saw stained with what appeared to be blood. U.S. customs agents confiscated the weapons and fingerprinted Despres. Then they let him into the United States"

That guy in the picture came over with all that and they let him in?

Okay, how about this?

"Our people don't have a crime lab up there. They can't look at a chain saw and decide if it's blood or rust or red paint."

That's it? They can't decide so why not just let him in?

"Gee, is this blood, rust, or red paint?"

"Well, I can't tell... we should let him through."

"Yeah, I think two hours is probably long enough to detain a guy trying to sneak through several sharp weapons, one of them being a stained chainsaw. You're free to go, sir."

Not good enough to get annoyed and freaked out over? How about this quote from the article?

"On the same day Despres crossed the border, he was due in a Canadian court to be sentenced on charges he assaulted and threatened to kill Fulton's son-in-law, Frederick Mowat, last August."

Isn't there some kind of way to find that out when someone's trying to, oh, I don't know, leave the country?

Actually, I think this is one of those times when the headline clearly sums up a lot of people's feelings on the subject.

wow! A chainsaw wielding maniac. You'd think that they'd use the PATRIOT ACT to detain his ass.

wow! A chainsaw wielding maniac. You'd think that they'd use the PATRIOT ACT to detain his ass.No, silly! The Patriot Act is designed to infringe upon the rights of American citizens rather than capture threats to the American public.

Well, don't feel bad. We actually let him into our country. Although I doubt he had the bloody chainsaw at the time. And he didn't kill anyone in your country (that we know of, hopefully).

Apparently white people are immune to it.

Apparently white people are immune to it.

Strange, as far as I know, most of the people that the patriot act has been used against are white.

C'mon, all he did was kill some Canadians. Is that really a crime?

Unless they could prove it was human blood, it seems like the most they could do _was_ detain him a little.

STUPID as it obviously seems. That photo gave me the chills.

You think they would have let an arab guy with weapons and a red stained chainsaw past the gate?

OK, so technically, they couldn't find any US laws to hold him to; but come on, how hard would it have been to do a check on him with the Canadian authorities since that's where he was coming from.

I've heard of people who have been detained longer at airport security points for having a pocket knife. This guy had three blade weapons, a pair of brass knuckles, and an oddly stained chainsaw. What, do police only make up things to keep people detained if they have nothing else to do that day?

What I can't figure out is if they really though something was up with this crazy bastard why didn't they call the nearest police station and have them at least send someone up to check things out? Even if the border guards are not equiped to test these sort of things I would think that at least some law enforcement agency nearby would be able to.

With someone who looks that crazy and was carring the stuff he was I would have thought they would have tried a little harder to figure it out.

He was later picked up by the police here in the States. Turns out he may have committed a murder or two back in Canada.
