Mornin', gang! Here's today's question for you- what's your favorite of the various repeating homage covers that the X-Men have had over the years? Examples would be a new group of characters bursting toward the readers while the old ones look on in surprise (Giant-Size #1, X-Men #70, etc.); a character walking off the cover to the right while the rest of the members look sad in the background (Cyclops, Kitty, Sunspot, Cannonball, etc.); the couple propping each other up while fighting (Cyclops and Jean, Blink and Mimic, etc.); and of course the "Welcome to the X-Men, [name] -- hope you survive the experience!" (Kitty, Rogue, Cecelia Reyes). There are others, of course, so let us know which one is your favorite, and why!

I always loved the "Hope you Survive..." motiff. The Havok one in particular was my favorite X-related cover for the longest time. Now I sound like Flight.

i voted for the 'new x-men breaking through the old' motif. i've always enjoyed that. the uncanny 254? version, however, has an art mistake. the native american character who was with the 'new' team in the book was tom corsi, not forge. forge came to muir with freedom force.

I really love all of these conventions, but I had to go with "Walkin off panel while everyone looks sad." This convention turns up in most other series as well. It only works well, though if everyone else on the cover really does look sad.

Oh, boy, this was a hard decision. With my undying loyalty to anything that rings close to Shadowcat, I would be remiss not to go with the "Hope You Survive The Experience."
Well, call me remiss.
I love the walking off while everyone looking sad. I think it's because it brings to the cover what I like most about the X-Men. They're buddies. (Well, for the most part.)
But, of course, I'll have to throw in an exception. This cover (which happens to be one of my favorites solely on artist alone) is close to the walking away, but instead of everyone being sad, we've got Jubes reminiscing on happy memories. She's sad to go, but the "team" is happy to see her graduate. Loved it.

I love that cover too, and I really loved that issue. I had seen Jubes go through so much as "x-man sidekick" that is was both sad and exciting to see her move on to something new. Even if that something new was later tossed down the drain then forgotten about.

I really love the "Busting out of the cover" covers. The creation of a new team of X-Men (even if it's a pseudo-team like the Muir Island crew) has always made me me giddy with excitement. I've been kind of sad that none of the recent teams have been given this launch treatment.

Have to go with walking off panel, myself. Can't really explain why, but I really like the simplicity -- and implied finality -- of that cover. You really believed Cyclops was going to be gone for a long time, or that Sunspot's departure was the last nail in the New Mutants' coffin, or that Cannonball had finally made the big leagues, never to look back.

I don't know if this applicable...but what about a hero holding the dead body of a heroine and screaming up into the heavens...ie Cyclops/Dark Pheonix, Supes/Supergirl and I'm sure there are more.

I loved the "Busting out of the old team" covers all the times they were used, especially the one done in the cover of Wizard with the Astonishing team.
I don't recall the "Hope you survive!" one though, can anyone post the images to that?

I'm a "Hope you survive" guy... I think it was first shown to me by the kid who introduced me to the X-Men in the early 80's.
Next would be the "Walking away..."

Not to mention your favorite and mine, Ms. Cecilia Reyes...
You forgot these three most copied cover motifs:

You forgot these three most copied cover motifs:
Well, I didn't forget the last one. The middle one is undoubtedly an icon, but while it predates Superman's Crisis cover w/ Supergirl, I couldn't remember whether it'd been copied a bunch of times in other X-books specifically. Same with the first one. If one of those is your favorite, of course, you would choose "Other."

Byrne actually nods to Neal Adams's Uncanny X-Men #56 with Uncanny X-Men #135, but I couldn't find the Neal Adams cover...

Ahh thanks. I never saw those before aside from the Cecelia one. They're cool but I dunno, not as iconic as the other covers I mentioned since the composition is usually different aside from the same "Surviving the experience' theme.
