I'm thinking about starting on an Avengers title and from what I can tell, the current story arc on the New Avengers title began on issue #7. Do I have to pick up the previous issues or is there a trade to pick up?

#6 hasn't shipped yet, I don't think. So you're as well waiting for the trade and starting on #7 (#7-10 are the Sentry flashback arc)
You might wanna try Young Avengers though, it's excellent and you should be able to find the first 4 issues without much trouble.

Bit confused at the arc bit. Na's first arc is issues 1-6. #6 isn't out yet, but there will be a trade once the arc finishes up. You probably will want to get that or the issues so far, but this is a good time to jump onto the title. This is a NEW team, so keep in mind this won't have yellow jacket etc, but this is a new beginning and well worth checking out. Young Avengers is a bit more rooted to the classic avengers, and is only up to issue 4 so far. Both are very good titles. A knowledge of disassembled would help, but its pretty much recapped at the beginning of NA anyway.

Well this is good. I've been trying to reorganise my pull list around my wallet so it's good to know that some of the issues that I thought had come out hadn't. Does that even make sense? I've gone Marvel mad so I may just pick up both.

Thanks for the help.

Yea, i understand now. NA has been running slightly late, 6 should have come out by now, and several sites still have the date wrong. I myself have recently done the same, jumping onto the avengers titles with disassembled. I recomend both NA and YA - they are very different, but very high quality imo. I also bought the hardback of the recent Casey/Kolins mini seires, Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and it proved very enjoyable, retelling the Avenger's origin, but in a fresh modern light. Top Stuff.

That's ok. I've been a Marvel Fanboy in some form or other since 1966... and I periodically go Marvel Mad... when things are good... but when they drift bad, I back off and vote with my wallet.

I don't think you can go wrong on either New Avengers, Young Avengers, The BreakOut of House of M right now. It's a good time to be reading Marvel. :D
