I believe that Dark Horse has released 2 or 3 TPB's for the Goon. The most revent Diamond Preview's even has Goon action figures...they look pretty cool.

They are offered again through Previews this month, The Goon seems to come out bi-monthly to quarterly. You also might want to checkout Billy the Kid's Old Time Oddities, it is by the same guy that does the Goon (Eric Powell).

MODERATOR: Please move this to the dark horse forum. thx.Hey zilla31,

You'll want to be careful which issues you are buying of this title. Some of the material was published prior to Dark Horse. Dark Horse re-published all of the older material into trades and all of the trades up to current are listed below.

#0 - The Goon: Rough Stuff
(collects some of the early pre-Dark Horse stuff)

#1 - The Goon: Nothin' But Misery
(collects the rest of the pre-Dark Horse stuff)

#2 - The Goon: My Murderous Childhood & Other Grievous Yarns
(Collects issues #1-4 of the Dark Horse series, plus the 8-page story from Drawing on Your Nightmares; "The Brothers Mud.")

#3 - The Goon: Heaps of Ruination
(Collects issues #5-8 of the Dark Horse series. Issue 7 is a Hellboy crossover issue.)

All of the trades seem to still be available at www.tfaw.com

so is the dark horse stuff very different? i've only read dark horse issues so those are the one's i like (not being able to compare to any pre-dark horse). maybe i should stick w/ those?

i grabbed the 3rd TPB (heaps of ruination) and absolutely loved it... i can't get enough of this title.

I was more concerned that you were buying off of the internet and might think The Goon #2 was the Dark Horse #2 and it would turn out to be the pre-Dark Horse #2.

Not that buying the pre-Dark Horse singles is bad, it can just be confusing to someone new to The Goon. The pre-Dark Horse stuff is a little more "raw" but it's still pretty funny. It is interesting to see the slight changes from then to current. I'd recommend getting all four trades.

the 3rd trade was great... i absolutely loved the story about the alien. the hellboy cross wasn't bad either :) do the first trades go into his background a bit? that's the one thing i've missed from the new monthlies i've read and trade #3 - is i still have no idea what the "beginnings" of this story are... can anyone summarize?

thanks huge.

His back story is pretty much explained in the first trade.

Here are his "origin" flashback pages from the DH site.

http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/preview.php?theid=12-592&p=1

Things should make a little more sense once you know where he came from. I'm a little disappointed that I've had to drop this title. It's hilarious. I might pick up the trades when I have a little more cash. I only have the first 8 issues. Issue #7 gave me a grin.

Did you enjoy the Hellboy/Goon crossover?

zilla31
06-11-2005, 08:43 AM
yeah the hellboy crossover was money... i loved that entire trade as a matter of fact. good stuff. i just picked up trade #2 (kind of reading this in a reverse timeline for some reason). this one explains a lot more about his and frankie's past (and i can't get enough of dr. alloy) - it's really good too... have yet to read any of the goon i haven't liked!

Man, I'm re-reading my Goons, and I'm on #5 (again) and there's this panel where Goon is sinking his ax into some hag's face and I laughed out loud. The violence is so wonderfully ludicrous that it's just really funny. :D

Another Aussie... g'day.

As far as a good Goon story line goes, you can't really go wrong if you start from the beginning so have a look at petriacce's post on the previous page with the trade listing.

Let me know if you'd prefer me to use another pic for this avatar....

my absolute favorite Goon story is in the Heaps of Ruination TPB (vol. 3) but Flem's right, you can't go wrong w/ any of the Goon stories IMO.

Theres the 3 trades by darkhorse, do u have to read "Rough stuff" (Pre DH) to get the story?

zilla31
07-13-2005, 06:19 AM
to be honest i've only read heaps of ruination (3) and my murderous childhood (2) and the new floppies i feel pretty up to date (2 gives up a lot of history hence the title) and 3 is just plain hilarious. a lot of the stories are stand alone. i'm DEF planning on getting 0 and 1 though here soon.

You'll be surprised at how diverse Eric Powell really is. The guy's an amazing artist in every sense of the word (albeit a little twisted).

#3 - The Goon: Heaps of Ruination

All of the trades seem to still be available at www.tfaw.com

To clarify here, "Rough Stuff" was originally a 3 piece miniseries published by Avatar around '99. Powell self-published a magazine-size TPB of this same series at the same time as the self-published (Albatross Exploding Funny Books) miniseries a year or two later. This TPB actually had "commentary" by Dwight Albatross in the margin the entire length of the book -- weird, and not entirely successful, but different nonetheless.

So, this is the 3rd time those stories have seen print.

TPB 1 by Dark Horse is the self-published color special and accompanying miniseries along with a couple shorts. IIRC one was in the final issue of DHP (as the inside cover intro notes) and one was in another little indy anthology (Digital Webbing #5 or something similar).

Both the Avatar miniseries and the AEFB miniseries were both black and white originally (and in the first TPB) but have been reprinted in color for the first time in the DH books. Goon Color special (AEFB) was Goon's first appearance in color. IIRC (it's not in front of me at the moment), the new rough stuff trade also includes several newspaper size Goon strips that originally were intended to be weekly features on the very first www.thegoon.com (roughly summer '99) which were eventually scrapped.

With the Goon in regular publication at DH, I think the only story not collected in a TPB yet is the short from the DH "Drawing on your Nightmares" book which was a more recent release.

Tuan Jim (a goon fan from the start)
