View Full Version : What’s the Last “New” Thing You Learned About Your Significant Other?

Three years of friendship, one and a half years of dating, and six years of marriage and Suzannah still manages to surprise me.
We were in the car yesterday, heading back from the beach (more on that later). Tot was a bit fussy so I asked if she wanted to listen to some music. As I turned the knob, Suzannah said “Oh wait, stop here, I love this song!”
It was Metal. Van Halen to be exact.
My Abba listening, Celine Dion album-owning, Glade-Plugin sniffing wife is into Van Halen. Somehow, this never came up.
She was even banging her head in rhythm at one point!
I suppose it was fair turnabout for my new fact for her. Yesterday was the first time I’d ever been to a co-ed beach. Every. I’m 27.
So what was the last new factoid you learned about your partner?

Last week I found out my wife (of 14 years) operated a fork lift while working her way through college.
And for some reason, when I found out, I was simultaneously jealous and turned-on . . . . .

Somehow we have been together for a couple of years and surrounded by comics and fan stuff, even gone to conventions together, and yet I never knew about Julie's fondness for the Fantastic Four. I was surprised and delighted to learn, when we first saw the movie trailer, that Julie was a big fan of the FF and had been since the days of the 1967 cartoons. Cei-U had a bunch of those same cartoons that he screened for us over New Year's, to my bride's delight. Knowing this was enough to get me looking, and we recently acquired an animated 1967 FF bootleg DVD of our own which we are enjoying immensely.

Last month, I found out from my boyfriend's parents that as a kid and an early teen, he was a very proud Republican (ala Alex P. Keaton). This was a helluva shock because he's one of the biggest liberals and Dems I know (he used to work for the party back in college).
Turns out he had adopted the GOP to rebel against his Democrat parents. Go figure. But it's still funny.
I've only been with Lauren for like a month now, so we are still in the learning phase.
But i learned that due to her being raised in a church family, she generaly feels bad after having sex with a guy for the first time, then doesn't do it again for a month, then does it again and doesn't feel bad. She apprently skipped that with me and just enjoys the sex, because i "Make her feel more comfortable then her other boyfriends".

The Mediterranean has a separate beach, so does the Galilee and the Jordan. There are stretches that are co-ed, of course, but I never went to those. The Dead Sea is, oddly enough, mixed for the most part, but there's one separate bit.

The biggest thing for me with Nik was when one night, completely out of the blue, he starts talking about Batman. It didn't hit me until the conversation was over, but it was the first time I had a comics related conversation with a guy and he didn't start off by saying "comics are for nerds." or "Spawn could totally take Batman."
I would have said the fact that he's as obsessed with video games as I am was something new, but, as he put it, that was what surprised him about me.

She ran the dishwasher and was getting ready to put some laundry in right before I got in the shower. A potentially cold shower isn't that big of a deal, but it's certainly an avoidable thing. And she's done this several times over the last six months or so. Realistically, maybe 5-8 times. And I've said something every time.
A few times I even put post-its on the dishwasher and the door to the garage (where the laundry stuff is) that said things like "Your loving husband is in the shower." She sort of thought it was funny.
So the other day, when she did it again, I just shook my head and said "I just don't understand. We've talked about this, and you still do it."
We discussed the issue for a few minutes, and eventually I said, "I just think it's inconsiderate." And, as I said in an earlier post, it apparrently was the use of the word "inconsiderate" that really bothered her. She argued that she wasn't doing it on purpose, she just didn't think about it. "Right," I told her, "That's what inconsiderate means. You didn't think about it. Because if you were doing it on purpose, then that would just be mean."
Anyway, my wife really is an amazing person and is very others-focused. And that's why it bugged her so much. There was resolution within an hour, and everything's cool now, but man did I learn something about my LWA.

See my "Anniversary/Fetish bash" thread... oh wait, you already did. Heh.
It was... very enjoyable, and Troy got a delighted shock when he turned around and saw us kissing. Hee.
Oh, and no, I didn't go down there with the intent to find a gal willing to be kissed... it just kind of happened, which is how it should be, IMO. We liked each other, enjoyed conversation, felt an attraction, and I asked permission and she said yes. She enjoyed it very much, according to her. Nice girl. I just keep talking about it because I'm so tickled that I finally got to kiss a gal after all these years, and it was a great experience (not a bad one). The bubbling you're seeing over it is delight, not really bragging. Well, maybe a touch of bragging. Mostly delight, though. And I think a whole lot of the delight comes in from the girl being such a nice one... it sucks when you kiss someone, and find out later that they're a jerk or something. It was just genuinely enjoyable all the way around.
As for Troy, he was both delighted *for* me, and also delighted to get to see it---he's had some fantasies about what that would look like. Seeing it happen right in front of him... well... let's just say, it literally had an instant effect on him. Hee. :D

My mother has been married three times. Once to my father (widowed), and twice since. She's been with her current husband for about 40 years, and has never taken his name. She's used my father's name (on a few things) and her ex-husband's name (98% of the time) ever since they were married.
When it comes to phone bills, they can be under any name. I have an uncle whose phone is under his dog's name (a dog that died decades ago, at that). For a time, my wife and I used her father's full name on our phone bill.
Anyway, my wife and I were friends for about 10 years before we even got married. We don't really really learn new things about each other. She does continually surprise me at the heights of her bitchiness, but her bitchiness was one of the major reasons we hooked up in the first place. So, I wouldn't say I'm learning anything new.

Ooops, coming to this late...
Not much of a story. I used to work at a radio network, and the "morning zoo" guy actually had a kind of a zoo at his house. IE, he kept a lot of unlicensed exotic animals in his back yard. One of which was a kangaroo. Anyway, Rod LIGHTNIN' ROD Sturgis (I don't remember his real name, but it was something obnoxiously radio like that) gets the bright idea to bring the thing into work one morning, not realizing that it might attack people, I guess. He did have it on a leash. But the leash did not keep the thing from punching me in the shoulder. I don't blame the animal; I would have punched me, too.
Edit: But that makes it sound like I provoked it...no, the only way I provoked it was by standing in front of it. Lots of gods creatures react that way to me. I think they can just somehow sense that I mean them harm.

It's the way you approach them with a spork.

Israel, mostly.
Two follow-up questions:
1) Do these non-coed beaches come in both male and female varieties?
2) If yes, what non-gay men would want to go to an all-male beach?

But she can't dance to it.
She was so happy when I loaded her iPod up with "Rhythm & Gangsta". The best part about this is she's Japanese and has a solid taste for some pretty hardcore rap and hip-hop.

Has she heard any Public Enemy or Ice-T?

I've been too flabbergasted to ask. She sure does love the Sugarhill Gang, though.

No, she doesn't like j-pop. But . . . just until next morning (She's not big on having her pic out there. Professional reasons).
