My daughter just installed this on our computer and I'm not sure about it. It looks like it's primarily used to share songs in an illegal manner. Also, when I did a Google search, about half the articles say it has spyware and adware and about half say it doesn't. So which is it?
Any concrete information anybody might have on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's a file-sharing app, alright. Here's the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limewire) on it... not much info :\ Being open-source is somewhat reassuring re: spyware or not, but... *digs some more*
A CNet article (http://news.com.com/2100-1023-801599.html?legacy=cnet&tag=mn_hd) says it had a piece of spyware in 2002, which they supposedly removed soon after.
This app comparison (http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/p2p/) says it seems clean.
Yeah, it's kind of inconclusive. Seems it has a cleaner rep than, say, the official Kazaa at any rate.

There's definately a spyware risk when you download somethin. I had to reinstall my Operating System last Friday because of it.
You can also download any kind of media (pictures, software, vido, audio). So there's a lot of porn to be found.

I downloaded an old version and It seems clean. The old version had a rating system or parential thing where you can block some results.
The new version doesn't seem to have that. Plus It shouldn't hurt If you download music videos and stay away from downloading audio stuff Captain Jim. Thats what I do at times when I do use It.
