Okay guys. Against my better judgement I've decided to post a cut from the album I'm recording. Please keep in mind that it isn't mixed yet. Some things need to be louder, some softer, in needs to be EQed, reverb needs to be added, this is by no means a final product. I'm not even sure that this is the take I want to use.
But enough with the disclaimers, tell me what you think.
This link is only good for 7 days or a certain number of Downloads. And its an iTunes file:
Here is "Tasteycakes":

Very fun, love the piano. Makes me wanna dance. I'm not a big fan of muted trumpet but the coolness is undeniable.

Thank you fellahs, thankyaverrymuch.
I'm not a big fan of muted trumpet ...
Which is why I'm using so many different configurations and textures. Trumpet with plunger mute, with harmon mute, open, Rhodes, piano, keyboard, guitar, vocals, different drummers and styles ...
The only thing that remains constant is the bass.

Any recent version of iTunes should work.Anything older won't play an MP4, though.
I think.

Is there anything else that will play this? Because I don't have Itunes, but I'm absolutely dying to listen to this...
Or is itunes something my cheap ass can get for free somewhere?

iTunes is totally free. Maybe I can put a Windows Media file of it up.

Oh, don't worry about it--I'll go look for a copy tonight while I'm at home.
Can I ask Mahfood about the cover and his thoughts on the project next weekend at MoCCA?
(Total random sidenote: it's a shame your NYC stay isn't right now, not just for that great MoCCA show, but the Brooklyn Museum (http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/) is doing a Baquiat show that ends this weekend...)
EDIT: But it looks like the show is headed your way--you're somewhat near the Museum of Contemporary Art in LA, right?

And as long as you're installing it, might as well try playing with the visualizer.

Can a trumpet be described as growling? I don't mean that as a knock--I like the sound of it. And the piano and the trumpet work well together. Did I hear something electronic beeping in the background, or might that have been my computer?
This is the first time I've heard you play that I knew I was hearing you, and I'm not disappointed. It might be my audio stuff on my computer, but the bass does sound a little... quiet? in parts compared to other music I've heard (it might be intentional, but there's a strong possibility that there's some EQ thing in my computer that my wife has all jacked up).
Kevin (whoever he is) was definitely right--hot shit. Damn, I like it all, and I'm not just saying it because I like you as a person--I could easily imagine hearing this on the pure or contemporary jazz stations on my satellite radio. No shit.
I'd be really curious to hear the final cut of this once the album's finished, with a discussion on what went in to changing the sound from this sneak peek to the end result.

I thought that as well, but Punch also said that this is real rough and not a final mix.

The trumpet could certainly be described as "growling." He's using a plunger mute, basically a toilet plunger placed over the bell of the trumpet and moved back and forth to get variations in the tone. Its used to sort of simulate a human voice.
If you heard electronic beeping it wasn't in the track.
And the EQ isn't even close to being what it should be. The trumpet needs reverb, the piano needs more bottom end, the bass needs more attack and presence, etc. That's why I was hesitant to post it up here just yet. I think the final mix will sound quite different.
