Hi all,

I posted some of my pictures in Sculpey's Biatches thread. But as I may have some non-Hellboy sculpts or even pictures to show... I will start a new thread.

I will try to post something here now and then. And if not, then it's just fades away as one similar and older thread...
:)

Here is a blue pencil Hellboy sketch I colored last weekend:

http://img38.echo.cx/img38/930/hellboywildwestvol3ok18008mz.jpg

Original's size is 1400x2200, line art is twice of this.

...and as I have one Pinky-maniac at home, here as a quick HellPinky:

(Pinky Street is a series of little Japanese figures, one can swap hair, clothes etc)

Hi,

if enyone is interested -
the very big jpg with the Wild West picture is (link removed, sorry), I just printed it out with ink jet printer for myself...
It will stay in the net for only ca 24 hours, so if there is someone who want's to see the details, only way is to download it right now...

Have you tried to replace the coat for a poncho??

Do you know ponchos??

Ivar_L

First -
the picture in the net is 6.9M. I colored it as 200dpi and 1400x2200 pixels. As the scanned line art was twice as big (2800x4400), I put to the final version the original line and resized color together. So, the picture (what I will remove from the net tomorrow) is 400dpi and 2800x4400 pixels. I printed out the smaller version with laser printer too, it fits to the A4 paper. If the picture is converted to 200 dpi without changing it's pixel dimensions, it will still be in pretty good quality and something like 14x22 inches big.
Almost like a poster...
:)

Do you know ponchos??Yes, I know. I tried to draw something like this last year (without reference, I know it's not right but still like the picture):

I have 2 Leone region 1 DVD-s (Special Editions), but I need to find a 2x4 hours time to enjoy them...

And fitzroy:

Thanks! I think it was you who asked about Freehand in my first picture thread?... (this Bang-picture is full vector and drawn in Freehand) Sorry I didn't answer back then. I like Freehand, I used it when I was working in advertising agency. It's quite easy and intuitive to use. It has some minuses too, of course, for example I couldn't get decent export tiff files out of it - it somehow distorted the straight lines...

Ivar_L

Learning Illustrator is on my to-do list... But I haven't used it enough to say I have used it. Whatever this means... :)

Here is one new picture:

Yesterday I finally took my Little Endless Sandman statue and re-sculpted it from the waist down. The reason - I planned to mix some silicone for my Hellboy and it was only practical to have one more small sculpture around if there was some spare silicone...

My history with polymer clays is quite short. Not in years but in sculpts... When I discovered it, I tried to sculpt Ghost in the Shell heroine. I almost finished it, but as it (she) got too muscular, I stopped. It was great for learning anatomy, though. Then I made 3 Little Endless sculpts, but every one of them had something I didn't like. I think Dream's new version looks ok. At last I have one finished sculpture...
:)

It's made from different Cernit clays, it's not colored. Base is wood - apple.

For a comparison - the link to the original version of Sandman is here (http://www.utv.ee/~ivar/gallery/endless/sandman.gif).

Hi,

after a long time I worked a little on my Marv bust. I already posted a couple of pictures here, so here is only one older progress picture this time:

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/1439/marv014jo.jpg

I started the bust and wireframe so that Marv looks stright ahead and the sculpt is symmetric, as was my first bust, Hellboy. But then I didn't like this look anymore... It was good for stone like Hellboy, but not dynamic enough for a killer Marv. At first I was thinking about tilting the head after it's baked, but the armature I made is quite hard. So I didn't even try this. There was another way - I just removed some clay from the body's dummy and tried to sculpt it in a more interesting position.

Here are two pictures from today. When neck and shirt are ready then I will add the overcoat.

Ivar_L

Thanks!

About textures - the main tool I use is one from the Soviet manicure set with kind-of smooth and curved leaf-like tip. It's the on I like and use the most. Shirt texture - at first I tried to somehow slip over the clay with another tool to make those lines, but the edges didn't look good. So I took a very small screwdriver and started to slowly pat with it... Only then I discovered that I don't need to smooth the lines afterwards - in this way I got nice additional fabric like texture of microscopic lines.

It looks like Cernit is good material for textures, it's pretty easy to smooth. I like the elephant-like skin on Marv's back (not visible on photos very much). Sadly, it will be covered with the coat... But, yeah, most of the skin (and my sculpting) is made with the one tool, on this old picture this is the second one from the top.

http://alex.utv.ee/~ivar/sculpt/hellboy_sculpt_ivar_tools.jpg

I think I need to take another tools photo, I modified some and made a couple of new ones...

Just when I was thinking that I should add some pictures here...
:)
killer-cakes -
Here is how I started this sculpt -

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/1439/marv014jo.jpg

I don't think it must be as complicated. In fact, when I decided to try to make this bust as asymmetrical as I can, it was pretty clear that it was going to be almost impossible to tilt the head... But I must say it's a very stable wireframe.

And - here are a couple of photos from today with some more angles. (By the way, I discovered that "Sepia Mode" in my camera is pretty useful when photographing unbaked figures.) After a long pause from sculpting this bust I completely re-sculpted the hair on this weekend, like them much more now. Finally started the overcoat today, so it's still very rough, unbaked and without the textures.

That is one of the greatest looking Marv sculpts I've ever seen. Great job. :)

Ivar_L

There is a pretty similar sculpt out there somewhere in Google -
http://ggstudio.org/db2/00144/ggstudio.org/_uimages/Marv.jpg
It's hard to critisize when there is only a head, but I think some of the textures look too uniform. Also, the front view is too angular, in fact, I think that Miller draws Marv a little bit TOO circular in front view...

About my bust -
I think I will do something with the mouth... Also, I'd like this bust to be bulky and elegant on the same time. I'll try to cut the lower part even thinner and will add some clay to the top part of the curved cut area. So it kind-of flows in the air... I hope it will look bigger this way and I don't need to widen the shoulders. But I need to do something with them too...

Some small progress here again -

I wrote that I'd like to make it to look more bulky without making the shoulders wider. That's what I tried to do today. Maybe it's not that easy to spot with only today's pics, but the difference in look and feel of the bust is really massive.
Also, I was looking Miller's artwork and I think I will make some modifications to the mouth and lower jaw.

Now that I see it I think you made a good decision to bulk up your sculp, Ivar.

The tapered shape that the bust sits on is supposed to reference his chest and shoulders and he is a huge guy after all. I also like that you vary the thickness of the "shoulders" from one side to the other. When viewed from the back it is stylized and pretty geometric but I think that's good because if you made it too realistic it would be kind of gory. I mean, it's a slice of upper torso.

Ivar_L

I'd like it to be the same size as my Hellboy bust. Somehow the head got a little bigger, so I'm making a smaller base this time. Marv is 12.5 cm, it's something like 5 inches.

I'm drooling over CB massively, have double sided poster and flipbook and planning to get some figures but haven't seen the movie... It's not sure it will run here and if it will, then at the very end of the year. But if copy will be here, I will see it at the preview screening.

But no, it isn't CB. If I will add some clay then the style and influence will be pretty obvious, character can be a little bit more complicated...

Here is my new figure after the first sculpting session:

http://img304.imageshack.us/img304/6185/d028005xp.jpg

Of course I changed it already after I took the photos...
I took the proportions from Batman Animated books's Harley Quinn's model sheet, so this sculpt will be heavily influenced bu Bruce Timm's style. On the same time, as my own drawing style is more skinny (still cartoony but more Brom-like maybe?), I'm not trying to emulate him. At the moment this sculpt is way too anatomical, I will simpify it. The final result will be a little more angular (or detailed) than Batman Animated style but still almost without textures, maybe only with some tool marks.
As who this is, I don't think it will be too complicated to guess it after a couple of more sculpting sessions. She is a comic book character but not a superhero...

Ivar, you could do this type of work professionally. Is there anything stopping you? I mean, seriously man. I am probably one of the more harsh art critics out there. Still fantastic Ivar. I have a question though.

Are eyes usually sculpted that way or are they "blank" with the painters doing all the work. Does that make sense?

I'm not at home to check some of my statues. Was there a specific effect you were trying to achieve with Marv's eyes?

Ivar_L
10-06-2005, 03:17 AM
Eyes - as I see on the photos (where all the details are much bigger than in real life) I need to fix them - not as round as I'd like them to be.
I don't want to only paint the eyes. When there are small grooves, then darker paint/color will be inside it and lighter will cover the higher details, so the details will be visible without trying to draw the irises every time with the smallest brush...

PS: I got some Fimo yesterday and started a new bust to try it out. Pics later today, but I can already say that it's much harder to get same kind of clean details with this clay (Marv and Hellboy are made of much harder and steady Cernit).

I tried Fimo today and I must say it's different from Cernit. Here's a picture (I spare you all from progress pics this time... :)):

http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/3246/al062um.jpg

I wanted to try Al Swearengen from Deadwood series but thought that maybe I should try not a likeness but a style of caricature this time...
I don't know. It doesn't look as crazy or deformed as I wanted, so I don't know what to do with it. It's not baked, so I could use the clay for something else... Or I could leave it as it is and work on it when I'm sick of other sculpts - it's very far from being finished.

In any case, Fimo is much softer and acts quite differently. At least this bag I got doesn't need conditioning - it's soft and sticky and ready to use right away. It feels very nice and is much more friendlier to sculpting with fingers (and, I can imagine, a loop tool). On the same time, I think it could be much more difficult if I'd try to make Marv like details in Fimo. When Cernit is kind of bouncy and kind of "tries to go back to the form it had before one shapes it with tool", Fimo deforms from the slightest touch. If Super Sculpey is even softer then I can't understand how it's possible to sculpt anything from it...

No, this isn't a Dark Horse sculpt line. It's real name is Sculpts Of Characters I Drool Over And Like to See on My Shelves...

Next bust (I really hope so!) is Christopher Lee as Saruman. Of course I don't know will it look good enough to post photos of it to the net...

Hi again,

as I hope to get Bowen's Abe Sapien bust soon, I was thinking about how similar bust of Liz could look like... and tried to draw one. Blue 0.5mm pencil on Canson tracing paper, scanned and colored. I just love the texture this paper gives to the scanned background and pencil lines! I didn't use Mezco toys or package art when drawing, I tried to find pictures in paperbacks. At first I was planning to color the flames on the base yellow, but as the original Abe bust has stone-like base, I left them grey. I like this picture, but will it be a 3D object one day, I don't know...

By the way, what's the decent price for Bowen's Abe mini bust?

As for Abe the prices seem to be going up (a year ago seemed like 40 or 50 now more often 70 or 80, but I don't mak an effort to track this stuff). I know you're on the StatueForum once in a while. Chek out the Hobbit's price guide links on the bottom of the main page. The guy lists all sales of statues on E-bay. They're organized by month so checking out sales over the last 3 or 4 will give you an idea of the current market.

I wish on a daily basis that there was a Liz bust to go with the Abe. Looks like a great start.
I paid 60 for my Abe bust, but that was a long time ago and I don't know what they run now.

If no idea what to draw then draw a) Vampirella, b) Elektra or c) female with two big cats...
:)

Another drawing I scanned and and colored with this Liz picture (some 1:1 details on the right side):

Sorry for this post as I have nothing interesting to show... I'm trying to finish one commissioned sculpt I haven't posted any pics online and I won't until it's finished. Also, I really hope that I have Marv's mold ready before Christmas... Lot's of plastering in last days...

I got Bowen's Abe bust and saw it's size and details in flesh. I really like it, it looks much better than I was hoping. I think I really need to make my Liz bust now. I started some weeks ago, made a quick armature from wire and cheap clay. I may as well post one of the pictures (I took yesterday) here, maybe it forces me to start to sculpt it... :) Will be interesting to see, can I make more realistic and smaller scale face...

I just baked my first Fimo sculpt, what I started long time ago to try out this clay -

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/7439/al086md.jpg

I hope it looks like Al from Deadwood... Will add shoulders, base and paint and I hope it will make a nice little mini bust. One thing I can say - it's much-much easier to sculpt hair from Cernit. Fimo changes it's form from slightest touch, Cernit tries to keep it.

And another picture I drew last week -

it's a newspaper illustration (30x40 cm 300 dpi). Those two caricatured persons got a prize for their 2005 works, one of them is a rap-singer and another is former tv station's boss and a film maker.

I'm very-very happy how this Marv turned out! I had several problems with silicone, but it looks like at least Marv's mold is almost perfect. The first casting is almost flawless, only two bubbles, both of them in not important places and one of them will be not visible when connected to base. Flash is minimal and removes very easy, so in some places there is no sign of connection of two mold's sides. I was ready for several problems with collar or chain area, but there isn't any. I just can't believe how good it looks. I almost don't want to spoil this bright white resin with paints...

Base was a little more problematic. I had some problems when pouring silicone molds. The resin cast is not perfect, there are some small bubbles in logo area. But nothing too dramatic. I used small aquarium stones as a filler, so this base is HEAVY (6.5x6.5x6.5cm=525g)!

So far so good, I try to paint it this week and hope that I can post the finished bust pictures soon!

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/464/marvcolor045to.jpghttp://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3797/marvcolor030cd.jpg

I suddenly discovered that it can be used as a bookend. So, if I make, let's say, Goldie for the same base, I will have bookends!...

Thanks! If I only could find Testors Dull Cote somewhere to varnish and finish my Marv. I used Acrylic Varnish Matt from Talens on the first copy and it's too shiny. I keep looking...

I'm planning to make a third comic book bust. Was thinking about different series I like, but none of them felt right. Sandman - too many sculpts already and too many different visions... Bone - too cartoony... And then it was clear - Preacher! Jesse Custer could be ideal for a bust. I like Steve Dillon's art and I haven't seen any sculpts based on his style. So, I think I will try it some day. I just need a good idea/reference for the base...

I'm posting it here only because then I have no way back and I need to sculpt it...

I started Al Swearengen's caricatured face some time ago, just to try out Fimo. At first I was thinking not to bake it... but I did. This week I was trying to add some sort of quick base and torso to it to get one more finished sculpt to my list. Anyway, here it is. No mold making this time, I will prime and paint this one. Will post another picture after dry-brushing...

EDIT:

Another picture of my Mathilda sculpt, the one I posted in February was awful. This is a 3.5 cm head for 1:6 sculpt, sculpted from Cernit/Fimo mix.

God this thread is old...

Ok, some new and not-so-new pictures. This one was already posted on this summer, when most people were in San Diego, inspired by the typo on Hellboy Animated website:

http://img417.imageshack.us/img417/79/rabidpenguins800oh8.jpg

A couple of weeks ago I got Weta/SideShow's Gandalf the Grey 1:4 bust. I was planning to try another likeness sculpt for a long time and here's the start - Christopher Lee as Saruman. I'll try to make a bust which will look good with official Gandalf, so wooden base I made in summer 2005 looks pretty similar. I was thinking that maybe it's easier to try to sculpt the face separately and later make it to be a part of the bust:

In a last couple of weeks I took my Werewolf sculpt I haven't touched since last summer and made some new details to it - tip of the nose, left hand's and leg's details etc. Here are some new pictures of it:

I really like the second picture! :)
Height of this 1:8 scale Werewolf (with the base) is 18 cm.

I'm at a complete loss for words, Ivar. That's nothing short of spectacular. Looking the other pics of the werewolf you provided earlier were nice enough, but seeing this fully molded is jaw-dropping. I cannot wait to see what you do with that mermaid we saw.

Ivar_L
01-30-2007, 03:04 PM
Thanks! But this Werewolf is far from ready...
:)
I need to finish the base. I don't want to add the usual gore - skulls and stuff, I'll try just to add some snow and small blue spring flowers we have here. And maybe some painted blood later... I need to correct legs' symmetry and some fur here and there. All this will take long time...
:(
About Mermaid and other Hellboy characters -
I tried to mix some grey polymer clay last weekend. This time with the help of my digital scales - 5 g black+100 g white - so I could get the exact color later. Darker and lighter clay was a little problem with my Hellboy... This new grey mix is much better, very good for sculpting and for photographing.

Anyway, to try this mix I made another quick armature for another Hellboy character. In fact, this was the one I wanted to try first, Mermaid just cut in somehow. I'm agonizing with her face, if I get it right, I will post some pictures. IF I will get it right...

And here's something extra for this thread - small and "quick" animated gif with my Hellboy. Better picture when it's finished and standing on a real base!

Old and forgotten thread...

I haven't drawn any decent pictures for months. Or years... Or ever. But a week ago I got some Winsor & Newton's ink - Sepia and White - and the best pen nib I've ever tried. I think it's called "G" and it's used by manga artists... So I tried to draw some. Here are some of them, all drawn without any reference, that's why I'm so proud here!...
:-)

Made this one today on free moments when at work, colors with Photoshop later when back at home, tried Color Halftone filter:

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/7748/barbarconan600x800ac5.jpg

Drawn with blue pencil and then with sepia ink, colors in Ps - I totally love this pen!!

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/2803/nosferatu600offsetrastete2.jpg

Older Hellboy image, probably with Hunt 102 wit quick colors:

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/7386/hbprofileraster1600tk0.jpg

Another image from sketchbook colored with quick watercolors. Will made another try on decent paper (link to the picture, as there's some cartoony nudity):

Hi all,

I thought that before the year ends, I should post some pictures of the sculpts I did this year. Here's a picture, composed for ClubHouse sculpting forum (it was a fantastic idea there, many sculptors did similar pics), some statues on it are finished, some are not:

And here's maybe my best statue ever, 1:8 Werewolf. It's in 6 parts, 17.5 cm with base:

http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/294/werewolfbyivar30msgm7.gif

About the base - at first I wanted to give it somehow early spring feel, but I couldn't figure out how to add snow without covering all the textures.
Snow with some blood streaks could look cool though... So, now there are just some straws and a small blue spring flower,
which is very common here in Estonia - sinilill (Anemone hepatica, Hepatica nobilis).
It was funny when I discovered, that one version of this flower is called Hepatica transsylvanica...

A great year for you Ivar,
these all look amazingly good!

I'm extra curious and fond of that little thing you're showing of Ilsa. She looks great! Or, well... they all look great, but I think she's the one I've seen least of so far.

Liz looks cool too from what I can see. The detail on the base looks great. Only thing that stuck me was the repetetiveness of the curls in her neck-hair.

Wow, 2008 came and went without a single post here... Of course, I didn't really sculpt that much. (One of the sculpting highlights in 2008 was that a photo of my Werewolf statue was selected as one of the "Daily Deviations" in DeviantArt.com in December 15. That was surprising, at first I had no idea why there was suddenly so many more views and comments... I discovered it a week later - I'm not that active on this site.)

Last year I tried to start to draw a little bit more. We made a drawing blog here in Estonia with weekly themes, and it has been a big push and stimulus to start and finish something. This is what I drew for this weeks theme - Corset, inspired by the movie I saw last week:
