Can anybody recommend some good Fantasy novels. I would prefer a novel that is not part of a trilogy or a series, just a book by itself. Any Suggestions?

The novel that started me reading fantasy was the first discworld book, "The color of magic". You could do a lot worse!

The Phoenix Guards by Steven Brust. It has two sequels, but you can enjoy it reading either of them. And you will enjoy it if you read it.

Monument, by Ian Graham.

A completely stand-alone story, and surprisingly good.

If you can find it, I would highly recommend Poul Anderson's The Broken Sword . It is a short novel(my copy is only 207 pages long), yet it has enough story for three or four novels. Anderson compressed writing conveys the world and the characters completely without having to spend a chapter or two telling you about them.

Another fantasy novel that's a stand alone is Roberta Cray's The Sword and The Lion . It has it all intrigue, religon, romance, magic unque in its own way, intriguing characters and great battles. It is another hard to find book, but worth the search.

Also Pat OShea's The Hounds of Morrigan though considered a YA/Children's novel, it has depth and wonder for anyone. A delightful cast of characters and situitations that will have you turning the pages as fast as you can.

The Redwall series by Brian Jacques. A fine example of British literature. Pretty awesome if you like fantasy/adventure.

Good choice and the good thing about Redwall is you don't have to worry about reading them in order. Jacques is a wonderful story-teller. He'll have you laughing, getting choked-up and generally rooting for his furry heroes. A wonderful series for young and old.

Well that sucks, since George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series is one of the best fantasy series out there... if only he'd hurry up and finish the fourth book now... DAMN YOUR SLOW HAND MARTIN!!!

That's what I hate about series authors is that they never write fast enough. Though you can't rush the hand of creativity.

What's worse is when online bookstores bother putting a release date to the next book, making you think it's going to be released that day... and of course it's not done.

Actually I've been pretty impressed that R. Scott Bakker cranked out his second book like a year after the first, and it looks like he'll be able to have the third done almost as fast.

But since you asked for standalone it's all about Guy Gavriel Kay. This guy is like a Canadian Nation Treasure, he's one of the best writers around period, let alone best fantasy writers.

Anyways, tigana's a good one to start on, Lions of Al-Rassan IMO is better but less fantastic (and sweet merciful crap they're makin a movie out of it! :O)

Actually The Knight and The Wizard by Gene Wolfe were originally written as one book I think and they're amazing. Amazing I tell you! I've never read such a good story about what it really means to be a true hero. If you see the Knight in the bookstore just read some of the jacket quotes, those guys describe it better than I ever could. I'm gonna re-read them as soon as I get my copy back from my friend.

I think Tigana by Kay is a great read. It's my favorite of his books. It's a beautiful story, full of meaning.

Absolutely agree with The Broken Sword, which is probably my favorite fantasy work. Anderson also wrote Three Hearts and Three Lions, and A Midsummer's Tempest which are also very good stand-alone fantasies.

Well I was going to recommend book I read probably 10 years ago, With a Single Spell by Lawrence Watt-Evans but after looking it up on Amazon I just learned that it's part of the Ethshar series.

Shows that you can read it without the other books though so it's pretty stand alone.

Legend (or nearly anything else for that matter) by David Gemmell if your looking for something serious.

If your looking for funny then take your pick of Terry Prattchets discworlds stuff. The Guards or Witches books have been the ones I can read again and again.
