So has anyone else heard the new Coldplay single, Speed of Sound. I heard it for the first time earlier tonight and, gosh, it's BORING. Yet again, Coldplay rely entirely on Chris Martin's admittedly wonderful voice but nothing is going to hide just how weak the song is. I can't really say I like them too much (though I did for a short while a few months ago before coming to my senses) but at least they tended to have, at the very least, decent vocal melodies. Not so here. Martin does a good job with what he's given but man, is that melody a clumsy mess. And, yup, they didn't take the few years off to refine their musicianship because yet again the instrumentation is as faceless and non-descript as humanly possible.

In short, I consider Coldplay's new single to be pretty damned crappy. What do their fans think (I think there are some here)?

2nd album better then first, if the first single is any indication,t hey have not chosen to go the route of my beloved Radiohead and follow a nice pop album with something really great.
I predict it sells well in any event, but am sad.

Ha, that's what I thought. Is it just me or is it way longer than it should be? It seems to go on and on.

I'm thinking they played it safe for the 1st single and then the rest of album will be innovative.....or it could just be a bunch of ode's to apple.

I comment on music as how I see it, even if I am going to be snotty towards the band in question. You don't like R.E.M. or the Velvet Underground, but like Coldplay and Oasis, fine. I personally like R.E.M. (mostly pre-Warner Bros.) and think that the Velvet Underground are one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and that Coldplay and Oasis are as dull as church.

However, I don't tear into people because their tastes don't coincide with my own.

They released a pretty dull track off as the first single of the last CD too before putting out better follow-ups. Maybe that is their strategy here as well. I haven't actually heard it yet though.

To lower expectations to the point that the next single sounds good by comparison?

Interesting strategy.

Awww, "The Scientist" was a really pretty song though.

I'm kind of dreading the release of the album.

Not that I really dislike Coldplay, but UK radio's going to be playing their stuff 8 million times a day now that they've finally tired of U2's last album.

I must be one of the only people who liked it.

It reminded me alot of 'Clocks'.

Yeah, that's the problem.

I like the first single a lot... yes, it sounds like Clocks... and I can't wait for the full-length CD on June 7th. Martin said their third album is very Kraftwerkian. Very promising, indeed. :D

It's being released? Hmmm, last I heard Martin said completing the thing was tough slogging for them.

I swear I saw an ad in Rolling Stone for the CD... maybe that's the start of the tour. Oh, shit... I've done it.
