Do commercials make you wanna buy the product after you see them on tv?
Definitely doesn't work on me. The beer commercials are hilarious to me. Room full of people partying but you know 3/4 will have to be up in the morning with a hangover and have to be at work the next day at like 8 or 9 a.m.

No, but I haven't been forced to sit through a commercial since I first got TiVo. In fact, I can't remember life before TiVo, then again, I remember the days when it had a "30 second skip" button.

It depends on what you think they're supposed to do.

Compel me to buy something I'm not interested in? No.

Inform me of a new product of a type that I would be interested in and might well buy if I knew about it? Certainly.

Sometimes, but usually no.

Typically not. Though I still go out of my way to avoid commercials whenever possible.

I'm not an expert but the way I heard advertising explained to me it's all about brand recognition. You're more likely to buy a product you recognize from TV versus one that you don't. Coke and Pepsi spend millions in advertising not to encourage you to buy their products but to recognize their brand and to differentiate themselves from their compeitors.

It seems like I usually hate companies more after I see their commercials.

I can only remember one time some friends and I were watching TV, saw a commercial, then went out and loaded in the car to go buy a bunch of, in this case, cheeseburgers. Of course, we were pretty high.

Usually only food commercials. But that's because I like to eat.

The good thing is I never follow up on them. I'd probably weigh about 400 lb if I did.

They sure don't. I usually change channels or get up and do other things during commercials.

Some do, but others, like Paris Hilton's unusually soft-core "Carl's Jr." ad, do just the opposite. I won't be patronising that chain, whist that ho is their spokes-skank!

Unless it's something I don't know about and am interested in, I've never been swayed to buy anything from a commercial.

I don't understand why Coke, Pepsi, McDonald's and other companies that everyone knows about and their products don't change much keep spending billions on this.

New products, it's good. For existing products...how many different ways can you sell Coke?

The only commericial that caused me to buy something as a result of seeing it (other than an awareness thing), was the commercial in the mid-90's that showed a hot chick shaving her face with a razor to show how good it was on sensitive skin. A friend of mind did the same thing and mentioned that if she was shaving...something else...in the ad, they wouldn't be able to keep them on the shelf.

No, I only buy things unless it's something that was previously looked at.
Adverts disgust me

If it's food, yes. If it's something I'm not interested in, no. Something new that I might be interested in, most likely.

It all has to do with marketing. When they brainstorm an idea for a commercial they target a specific audience based on research and analysis.

Take an a detergent commercial for example. Generally(I repeat generally), people that use these products are women of a certain age, mother types. They target them by using imagery and scenarios that concerns them or is appealing to them. You might not be interested in the product, but then again it was not targeted to you.

Dude, I read this article once about a guy that use to be in charge of marketing for McDonalds. He talks about how they manipulate people with their marketing, usually aimed at children(with the help of toys). We just have no idea how it affects all of us.

No, they don't. All commercials drive me nuts.

The only ones I like are the Nationwide (especially the one with Hammer), & the Burger King-Star Wars commercials (Vader vs. BK King, classic).
